C l e a r l y, t h is d e f i n i t i o n d o e s n o t a c c o u n t f o r a l l t y p e s o f i n n u e n d o . S e x u a l i n n u -e n d o , f o r e x a m p l e , d o e s n o t c o n s i s t o f a n a c c u s a t i o n a n d d o e s n o t d e a l w i t h t ru t h o rf a l s i t y. tion to the illocutionary act, which implies a locutionary act (the utterance of a sen-tence with determinate sense and reference), there is a third sense in which sayingsomething is doing something, namely, the perlocutio nary act: Say ing somethingwill often, or even norm ally, produ ce certain consequential effects upon the feelings,thoughts, or actions of the audience, or of the speaker, or of other persons: and itmay be done with design, intention, or purpose of producin g the m (1962: 101).Accor ding to Austin, perlocutionary acts include convi ncin g, persuading, deterring,and even, say surprising or mis leading (1962: 109).

Although Austin's treatment of perlocutionary acts is tentative and undeveloped,the discussion is valuable in that it underlines Austin's awareness that the illocution-ary act by no means exhausts the ways in which speakers can do things with words.What's more, it is interesting to note that innuendo does seem to have effects verysimilar to what Austin describes as perlocutionary (though I do not wish to claimthat innuendo is a perlocutionary act). An innuendo is intended to produce certainchanges in the beliefs of the audience, and in the case of the sea-captain, beliefswhich could quite easily destroy his career. What is more, innuendo passes one ofthe tests Austin suggests as a means for distinguishing between illocutionary andperlocutionary acts, namely, that illocutionary acts can be prefaced by explicit per-formatives whereas perlocutionary acts cannot. So, according to Austin, we can say

I warn you that but we cannot say I imply that or I insinuate that (1962: 88).Bach and Harnish suggest that this distinction between illocutionary and perlocu-tionary acts is explained by the fact that unlike illocutionary intentions, perlocution-

ary intentions do not have to be recogniz ed to be fulfilled (Bach and Harnish, 1979:82). If this is the case, and if misleading can be counted as a perlocutionary act, thenit is difficult to understand why, within Austin's schema, innuendo falls outside thecategory of perlocutionary act.

Austin is well aware of the dilemma:

... there may be some things we 'do' in some connection with saying something which do not seemto fall, intuitively, at least, exactly into any of these roughly defined classes, or else seem to fallvaguely into more than one .. . For example, insinuating, as when we insinuate something in or byissuing some utterance, seems to involve some convention, as in the illocutionary act; but we cannotsay 'I insinuate ... ' and it seems like implying to be a clever effect rather than a mere act. (Austin,1962: 105)

It is hard to understand here what Austin means when he suggests that insinuatingseems to involve some convention , especially as it fails his own test of conven-

tionality: it cannot be made explicit by being prefaced by an explicit performative.However, Austin suggests that such phenomena as evincing, intimating, insinuation,and innuendo, though essentially different, often make use of the same or similarverbal devices (1962: 75). It is certainly true that there are certain conventional ver-bal devices by which innuendo can be conveyed. A classic example is the MontyPython character's use of the marker, N u d g e n u d g e , w i n k w i n k . K n o w w h a t I m e a n ?to signal an innuendo, in a similar way to the use of p l e a s e to mark an utterance asa request. But, of course, the use of such devices makes for thinly veiled innuendoand does not preclude the use of innovative and so unconventional devices. Yet, as
