Day 1 Saturday 1st February
Sunny with scattered cloud; breezy, warm and humid
We arrived in Belize on time in the middle of the day, completed airport formalities, met Peter our local guide
and transferred the short distance to our comfortable hotel at Burrell Boom. After settling in and eating a bite of
lunch we drove to the “Baboon Sanctuary” at nearby Bermudan Landing. A local guide led us into the small
community run reserve and we enjoyed sensational close encounters with a group of “baboons” aka Mexican
Black Howler Monkeys. These are an endangered species restricted to Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula and adjacent
parts of Guatemala and it was a privilege indeed to get so close to them. A satisfying range of birds seen along
the way included Short-tailed Hawk, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Acorn Woodpecker, Royal Flycatcher, Yellow-
throated Vireo and Montezuma Oropendola.
Day 2 Sunday 2nd February
Sunny with scattered cloud, South-westerly breeze, hot and humid
Out at first light around the grounds of the hotel the early birders saw Red-lored and White-fronted Parrots,
Golden-fronted and Golden-Olive Woodpeckers, Hooded Oriole and a range of warblers. After breakfast we all
headed off northwards towards Crooked Tree. Savannah Vultures and a Laughing Falcon were noted en-route
and once there we spent most of the morning boating around the lagoon and up the narrow channels of Spanish
Creek. A wealth of wildlife seen included, some sizeable Morelet’s Crocodiles, both Green and Black Spiny-tailed
Iguanas, a Tabasco Mud Turtle, Snail Kites, Black-collared and Great Black Hawks, Ospreys, Northern Jacanas
and a range of herons and egrets.
After lunch at a rustic local restaurant we explored some of the local pine savannah, an interesting and localised
habitat type typical of the impoverished soils in this region of Belize. Here we saw Grace’s Warbler, Northern
Cardinal, Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Blue-grey Gnatcatcher and Chipping Sparrow. A mighty Jabiru on some
roadside floods on the way back to Burrell Boom was a real bonus and at an area of open grassy fields at Baker’s
Ranch we finished the day with Scissor-tailed and Fork-tailed Flycatchers, Eastern Meadowlarks and Killdeers.

Day 3 Monday 3rd February
Sunny, scattered cloud, hot, humid and breezy
A Violaceous Trogon, a trio of Black-cowled Orioles and a smart Yellow-throated Warbler started the day well
for the early birders, then after breakfast we embarked on a Manatee and snorkelling expedition. Much time was
spent in boats on an azure sea amongst picturesque mangrove-fringed coral islands. Sadly, no manatees were
seen despite some serious searching but a Green Turtle put in a brief appearance and a range of birds included
Magnificent Frigate-birds, Brown Pelicans, Ospreys and Royal Terns, whilst the snorkelling was still as enjoyable
as ever.
Day 4 Tuesday 4th February
Overcast with sunny breaks and heavy showers in the morning. Sunny, warm and humid
with scattered cloud in the afternoon
We were away from Burrell Boom after breakfast, drove north past Crooked Tree to Tower Hill Landing just
short of Orange Walk, and then waited for the rain to stop before boarding the speedy skiff to Lamanai.
Eventually underway in overcast conditions we roared along the New River noting Long-nosed Bats and Lesser
Nighthawks, Boat–billed Herons, Ringed and Green Kingfishers, Snail Kites and a distant soaring Jabiru.
Arriving at Lamanai Lodge in time for lunch, we settled in then took a walk out to the airfield and back through
the secondary habitats around Spanish Church village. We had another close encounter with some Black Howler
Monkeys and saw a variety of birds including Keel-billed Toucan, Yellow-winged Tanager, Black-throated Green
and Parula Warblers, Red-legged Honeycreeper and three species of oriole. Later, a nocturnal boat trip out on
the lagoon produced some Morelet’s Crocodiles and Striped Basilisks, two Grey-necked Wood-Rails and a few
Pauraques, concluded an enjoyable day.
Day 5 Wednesday 5th February
Sunny, scattered cloud, humid and very warm
We started the day with a dawn walk on the Dawson’s Creek pine savannah where we found Ladder-backed and
Lineated Woodpeckers, Aplomado Falcon, Grey-crowned Yellowthroat and Botteri’s Sparrow. After breakfast
we set off to the nearby Lamanai Mayan site and spent the rest of the morning exploring these wonderful and
atmospheric ruins. The birding was good too and during the course of the morning we enjoyed great views of
Keel-billed Toucan, Slaty-tailed and Black-headed Trogons, Ivory-billed and Olivaceous Woodcreepers, Hooded,
Blue-winged and Worm-eating Warblers and lots more. A troop of White-nosed Coatis further enlivened things
and a number of handsome Rose-bellied Lizards ensured that reptiles were not ignored.
In the late afternoon we embarked on a sunset “booze-cruise” out on the lagoon. This was very much enjoyed
by all; a very pleasant couple of hours chugging sedately along the edge of the lagoon and up a narrow creek on a
comfortable raft, quaffing drinks, eating nibbles and watching out for birds and other wildlife. Highlights
included a lovely close adult Snail Kite, several Limpkins, both Ringed and Belted Kingfishers and a superb
Sungrebe.

Day 6 Thursday 6th February
Sunny with scattered cloud, hot, humid and breezy
An early walk at Lamanai through the forest to the ruins of the 15th century Spanish Church proved productive
with Plain Chachalaca, Barred Antshrike, Spot-breasted Wren, Bright-rumped Attila, Green-backed Sparrow,
Black-headed Saltator and Red-throated Ant-Tanager all being seen well. A couple of Agoutis and a Red-rumped
Tarantula added further interest.
After a late breakfast we departed Lamanai and retraced our steps back down the New River to Tower Hill
Landing. Here we transferred from boat to minibus and headed back south towards Belize City then south-
westwards through Hattieville to Belize Zoo just short of La Democracia. A couple of White-tailed Hawks
spiced up our lunch stop at a roadside restaurant and at the zoo itself we enjoyed the well-arranged exhibits
(Jaguar and Harpy Eagle included) and saw a wild Grey Fox, various warblers and a pair of Hepatic Tanagers.
From the zoo we continued on through Roaring Creek to the village of Teakettle where we turned south onto
dirt tracks up into the forested foothills of the Mayan Mountains and so to Pook’s Hill Lodge. We settled in and
enjoyed a last few good birds including a Long-billed Hermit, some Black-faced Grosbeaks and an amazing great
flock of over 250 White-collared Swifts.
Day 7 Friday 7th February
Sunny, scattered cloud, hot, humid and breezy
A full and enjoyable day at Pook’s Hill was spent exploring the grounds and the forest trails morning and
evening and tubing down the river in the heat of the day. A wide variety of exciting wildlife was encountered.
Birds included King Vulture, Ornate-Hawk Eagle, Mealy Parrot, Blue-crowned Motmot, Keel-billed Toucan,
Collared Aracari, Pale-billed Woodpecker, Violet Sabrewing, White-whiskered Puffbird and Crimson-collared
Tanager, whilst other notables included Black Howler Monkey, Yucatan Squirrel and Striped Basilisk.
Day 8 Saturday 8th February
Sunny with scattered cloud, hot and humid. Rain showers from mid-pm onwards
Another day based at Pook’s Hill. Some of the group went to visit the cave system at Barton Creek and came
back suitably excited by the wonders of the cave itself and brandishing a photograph of a Hook-billed Kite that
they saw. Others stayed at Pook’s and further birded the trails. Highlights today included White Hawk, Grey-
headed Kite, Collared Forest Falcon, Blue Ground-Dove, Squirrel Cuckoo, Smoky-brown Woodpecker, Barred
Antshrike, Thrush-like Schiffornis, Kentucky Warbler and Orange-billed Sparrow.
Day 9 Sunday 9th February
Overcast and wet at first becoming brighter by mid-morning. Sunny spells in the afternoon.
Warm and humid
Early rain restricted us to the restaurant area where a male White-necked Jacobin and a Purple-crowned Fairy
visited the feeders.

Then, after breakfast, we left Pook’s Hill and began the journey to Tikal. Our route took us back out to Teakettle
and then though a rolling landscape of farmland, forest and small villages. A couple of Crested Caracaras
enlivened the journey and we arrived at Benque Viejo del Carmen and the border a little after 10am. With
formalities completed we crossed into Guatemala and drove on through the late morning. We made a stop for
coffee and arrived comfortably at Tikal in time for a late lunch.
With our lodge situated in rich forest and close to the famous Mayan ruins we couldn’t have hoped for a better
base and in the late afternoon we set off to explore. We heard a number of Central American Spider Monkeys
high in the trees above us and saw one female well, hanging by her prehensile tail all four limbs free, reaching for
fruit. A good range of birds included a migrant Swallow-tailed Kite (very elegant!), two Grey-necked Wood-Rails,
several Collared Aracaris, a pair of Masked Tityras and a couple of Brown-crested Flycatchers. Towards the end
of the afternoon we reached the Central Plaza and, flanked by towering pyramids, spent some little time soaking
up the atmosphere of this remarkable place.
Day 10 Monday 10th February
Sunny with scattered cloud, warm and humid
The early birders were out at first light and found an exciting range of birds which included Ocellated Turkey,
Olive-throated Parakeet, Lineated Woodpecker, Green-breasted Mango and Blue Grosbeak. The rest of the
morning was spent on an extensive tour of the Mayan ruins with an expert local guide. We were all awed by the
grandeur and scale of the site – it really is a powerful and impressive place. Immersed as it is in thick forest, the
wildlife potential is huge too and in the course of the morning we saw Spider and Howler Monkeys, Grey Fox,
Ornate Hawk-eagle, Blue-crowned Motmot, Golden-Olive Woodpecker and three species of trogon. Two
specialities of Tikal also showed themselves well. The first, Ridgeway’s Rough-winged Swallow is something of a
birder’s bird but the second, a mighty Orange-breasted Falcon impressed everybody.
Lunch and a siesta ensued and then in the late afternoon an intrepid few ventured out again and had a fine
session seeing an Agami Heron, a male Canivet’s Emerald, a Northern Bentbill and a pair of stunning Grey-
breasted Chats.
Day 11 Tuesday 11th February
Overcast, warm, still and humid in the morning; sunny spells and a stiff breeze in the
afternoon
A Strong-billed Woodcreeper was a good last bird at Tikal. With breakfast completed we headed back to Belize.
We stopped briefly in Belmopan (surely one of the most laid-back capital cities in the world) and then proceeded
down the Hummingbird Highway that skirts the eastern flank of the Maya Mountains. We stopped at the very
pleasant Blue Hole National Park for a picnic lunch and a saw a nice little range of birds that included Collared
Trogon (wow!), Squirrel Cuckoo, Plain Xenops, Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Ovenbird and Golden-hooded
Tanager. In the mid-afternoon we reached Dangriga and the sea. Willets, Ruddy Turnstones and Brown Pelicans
greeted us as we transferred to a fast speed boat for the crossing to Saltwater Caye. An hour later we were safely
installed at our island paradise. Some swam and snorkelled, others just relaxed. Frigate-birds and Ospreys cruised
overhead, Royal Terns loafed on the jetty and the wind gently rustled the palms.

Day 12 Wednesday 12th February
Overcast at first then sunny with scattered cloud. Variable breeze, warm and humid
A full day based at Saltwater Caye with morning and afternoon snorkelling excursions. The morning trip took us
past Man O’War Caye where we were able to get very close to nesting Magnificent Frigate-birds and Brown
Boobies. The snorkelling both morning and afternoon was much enjoyed by all with a colourful range of fish
and coral to be seen alongside thrilling highlights in the shape of a huge Sting-Ray and a couple of Nurse Sharks.
Back at Saltwater Caye, the bird list grew, with Cinnamon Hummingbird, Yucatan Vireo and Mangrove Warbler
all adding a little spice to proceedings.
Day 13 Thursday 13th February
Sunny with scattered cloud and a brisk North-westerly wind. Warm and humid
We left Saltwater Caye after breakfast and pushed through a lumpy sea back to Dangriga. Once on the mainland
we made the short transfer to the local airport and boarded our flights up to Belize City. Two Jabirus circling
below the aeroplane as we lined up to land at Belize International were the last birds of the trip. Our
international check-in went smoothly, our flights were on time and we all arrived safely back in the UK the
following morning.
