Mammals

Bats are mammals that can fly. Over the past million years, bats have evolved from shrews into flying mammals.

NOCTURNAL

Bats are nocturnal animals. This means they sleep in the day and wake up at night. Bats sleep upside down. In winter they will hibernate until warmer weather, but wake up when they are sick.

ECHOLOCATION

Many bats find their way using echolocation. When it is dark they use their ears to see. They send out squeaking noises by clicking their tongue against their nose.

Squeaking Noises

The sound either hits something or it doesn’t. If it’s something, it bounces back.

CATCHING FOOD

The bat can tell if it is food or not. If it is not food, it avoids it, but if it is food, it flies upwards and swoops to catch it.
