Behavior is determined by the environment.
Man and animal learn through positive or negative reinforcement.
Both positive and negative:
Reinforcement increases the likelihood that behavior will be repeated.
Punishment decreases the prospect that behavior will be repeated.
{ Assumes human behavior is passive, and that independent thinking plays no part.
Learning has taken place when a change in behavior is apparent.
Understanding is seeing existing patterns.
Ivan Pavlov-
Experimented with dogs and conditioned them to salivate when a bell rang.
(example of classic conditioning)
Won the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1904
Albert Bandura
Social Cognitive Theory
(Motivation contributes to behavior, not just environment.)
Observation modeling
(People acquire behaviors by observing others and imitating them.)
{B.F. Skinner
Operant Conditioning
-Believed people shape behavior based on rewards.
Radical Behaviorism
-Experimental analysis of behavior. (looked into the role of emotions)
Key Figures
{ {Drills
Allows users to practice skills that have already been aquired.
Ex. Math
- Multiplication
Tutorials
Designed to teach skills by direct instruction.
Ex. Sharewareprograms

Classroom use
In my classroom, I would use a combination of learning theories to help all types of learners.
In my classroom
Behavioral techniques
Math Drills for memorization
Games with positive reinforcement when correct
Focus on the material
Break information down into smaller sections
Teacher controlled lectures
