PROGRAM NOTES Dem Bones, or Dry Bones, is a traditional African-American spiritual. The music is credited to James Weldon Johnson, an American author, poet, educator, politician, songwriter and early civil rights activist. The lyrics, which are commonly used to teach children basic anatomy, are based on Ezekiel 37:1–14. NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR Dem Bones offers a fun opportunity to feature your trombone section. You may need to adjust the dynamic levels in some sections of your band to assure that the trombones are prominent throughout the piece. You may even wish to bring the trombones to the front of the stage for the performance. Care should be given to the glissandi sections so that all trombonists arrive at the particular pitches together and at the correct time. I hope you and your ensemble find Dem Bones to be a fun and worthwhile musical experience.
