Principal’s Report It’s been a MADD time over the last few weeks – many great examples of how our students and staff learn together in a STEAMy environment.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics have been combined as part of the transition program for Stage 3 students from across the Sapphire Coast and in the planning and culmination of the MADD performances of 20th and 22nd June. On Friday, 16th June, local Stage 3 students were treated to biology displays, earth and environmental science explosions, chemical reactions, an introduction to agriculture and physics concepts as well as a sneak peak of the 2017 MADD production. It was a most successful day for all involved and further strengthened the links between primary and high school settings.

17th July – the last day of students’ winter vacation – while students prepare to return to school on Tuesday 18th July, Sapphire Coast Learning Community staff will be joining in professional learning at various venues; Bega HS will host sessions focusing on Australian Teacher's Wellbeing Toolkit, Using PLAN data for informing teaching and learning, best practice in applying the Aboriginal Education Policy and Writing Personalised Learning Plans. Other host schools include Eden Marine High School, and Pambula, Tathra, Eden, Merimbula and Bega Valley Public Schools.

Thinking ahead to the end of the school year, we have planned a range of professional learning sessions that teachers, administrative staff and student support staff are completing in twilight sessions throughout the year. The sessions cover a wide range of skills, from practising yoga for physical and mental wellbeing, to asthma first aid to applying professional teaching standards across the curriculum. When students finish the year on Friday 15th December some staff will be onsite on the following Monday and Tuesday, but most will be preparing for their summer vacation and family time.

All school staff enjoy developing and improving their performance and demonstrate their learning in similar ways to that of students. Evidence of my own learning is in the photo below: collaborating with University of NSW engineering students and other principals to build and program a robot to

detect a black line and change directions. Visit by Police Liaison Officer Our area has not had a Police School Liaison Officer for some time. On Thursday, 15 June we were fortunate to host the Shoalhaven Area Police liaison Officer who focused on cybersafety and for our seniors, consent.

Unfortunately, the day coincided with year 11’s day off so anyone in year 11 can speak with any teachers if they would like to know more about the content.

All involved were engaged and learnt some valuable insights into social media safety, criminal consequences and support services available.

Should any parents or students have any questions or concerns please see the resources listed below or speak with year advisers or learning and support teachers.

Girls League Tag Gala Day Bega High girls enjoyed a fantastic day at the Bega Recreation Grounds for the Kezie Apps League Tag gala day.

Bega High School formed a whopping 10 teams across Years 7 - 12 and also had 5 referees assisting throughout the day.

Apart from participating in a number of games against each other, SCAC, Monaro, Bombala and Lumen Christi High Schools, the girls raised $143 for CanAssist and got to meet and be coached by Kezie herself.

What an awesome day out!!

Coondoo Classic Success Bega High School achieved outstanding success in the South Coast Mountain biking Championships, held at Nowra last week.

Our Open Boys team consisting of 4 riders (Jack Robbers, Aidan Coady, Murray Farrell and Brooklyn O’Brien), were second in the Open Boys category and sixth overall out of a massive field of 66 teams.

The boys clocked up 13 laps in the 4 hour time period, that’s 78km!!! This is an amazing effort, with two of the riders having never ridden the 6km single track before the race.

Awesome achievement!! Carly Bexterman

2 0 1 7 S T U D Y G U I D E : S T R E S S - B U S T I N G T H E H S C Managing stress and supporting wellbeing so students achieve their best is the focus of this year’s HSC Study Guide, published in The Sydney Morning Herald today. The guide includes practical advice from Macquarie University experts for tackling procrastination and perfectionism, which can negatively impact on students’ results. Director of the Macquarie University Centre for Emotional Health, Professor Jennie Hudson said learning to think more realistically is a helpful strategy for students. “When you are stressed your mind is primed to look for threat, to look for the negatives. “If you want to improve your performance and your stress levels, then invest some time to first monitor, and then challenge unhelpful thoughts,” Professor Hudson said. NSW Education Standards Authority CEO David de Carvalho said it is incredibly important that students keep the HSC in perspective and maintain a balance. “Education is a lifelong journey. The HSC is an important point in that journey. “Students will achieve their best if they’re happy and healthy. Your wellbeing is important. “In addition to stress management and wellbeing, this year’s guide includes a greater focus on strategies for tackling exam questions with more detailed information provided for students.” The HSC 2017 Study Guide is designed to help this year’s students prepare for their HSC exams. It includes more than 50 articles covering over 100 HSC courses, and 15 videos, by experienced HSC teachers, NESA curriculum and assessment experts, and past students. The HSC 2017 Study Guide is produced by NESA and Fairfax Media. The print edition is published in the SMH. Additional content, including videos, is available in the digital edition. The 2017 HSC written exams will start on Monday 6 October with English and finish on Tuesday 7 November. HSC results will be issued to students online, by email and via SMS from 6.00am on Thursday 14 December.
