ANGIE’S LIST MEMBERS typically know how to be savvy when it comes to hiring contractors. So it was surprising to learn that 37 percent of roughly 1,000 respondents to a recent online member poll say they solicited fewer than three bids for their last large home improvement project.
What’s more, only half of respondents claim to have thoroughly reviewed their contract before signing, 36 percent say they merely “glanced” or looked “somewhat closely” at it, and — perhaps most surprising — 10 percent never signed one at all!
What we did not ask is whether those of you who obtained just a single bid or failed to get everything in writing had a bad experience that prompted you to join Angie’s List — something our reporters hear repeatedly when interviewing members. But when asked what you learned that would be helpful to others, it was clear that too many of you had a homeowner horror story to tell. “We made so many mistakes while thinking we were doing everything right that I don’t know where to start with advice,” says one member. It’s comments like this one that prompted our cover story on what you should know before you hire.

What keeps us honest? Angie’s List reviews come from real people like you! Contractors and health care providers cannot pay to be rated on Angie’s List, nor can they rate themselves. And they cannot remove their names from Angie’s List — ever. Members submit reviews and rate the services they receive on an A through F scale. We invite those providers averaging an A or B rating to advertise a discount in the magazine’s coupon section, a bene! t intended to provide more value to your membership. We immediately revoke the coupon of any provider whose average rating falls below a B. Angie’s List also accepts advertising for products and services we don’t rate. Those ads appear separately from the coupon section. Angie’s List charges all participating providers a fee that helps offset the cost of sending you the magazine each month.

In your opinion, what’s the most daunting aspect of hiring a contractor?
For me,
it’s doing
the research
to wade
through the sea of contrac-
tors to !nd a reputable
company and obtain reason-
ably priced bids.
The hardest
part for me
is inter-
viewing
multiple contractors and
having to “break up” with
one. It’s terrible when I have
two equal candidates and,
despite my research, have
to make a gut decision.

MOST CONTRACTORS EXPERIENCE rejection at one point or another when bidding on a potential job. “We service providers, we win some and we lose some,” says Wayne Olander, president of A-rated Arteffects — Architectural Interiors in Indianapolis. “Telling someone they didn’t get the job can seem hard, especially when you know they have much time and effort invested, but it doesn’t have to be a negative experience.”
Honesty remains the best policy, Olander says. He suggests homeowners explain early on that they plan to seek bids from multiple service providers, and that they’ll make a hiring decision after comparing estimates. “Saying this upfront establishes reason-able expectations,” he says. At a minimum, estimates should include a list of comparable materials, who’s responsible for obtaining them, a job description and costs.
After making your hiring deci-sion, give a courtesy call or send an email to those you didn’t hire.
“I would say that 95 percent of the time, you just don’t hear anything back,” says Mike May, owner of A-rated May Sealing, a driveway sealing company in Noblesville. He says contractors genuinely appreciate and learn from the feed-back. “I want to be as attractive as I possibly can,” he says.
Be clear and concise when explaining reasons, and most service providers will respond in a profes-sional manner. “Make lemonade out of the lemons,” Olander says.”

As a former driver education instructor, I found your article “Driver’s Dread” most interesting. There is absolutely no question that a competent driving school is the best source for a teenager to learn the ropes. Parents, for the most part, don’t have the experi-ence of teaching — and they may
hate me for this — not only the mechanics, but the !ner part of shaping safe-driving attitudes. Watch your mom and dad zip down the expressway at speeds way above the limit and you’ll understand why.

BEFOREYOU HIREANGIE’S LIST MEMBER Rob Qualls knows too well the hassles a homeowner may face without a detailed contract. Because he didn’t follow his usual practice of requiring one for painting late last year, he says he’ll have to pay another company to repaint parts of his Carmel home.
He says he hired Brian Bass of C-rated Real Painters of Indianapolis, based on his wife’s 20-year friendship with Bass
and the painter’s good work on smaller jobs. Bass never provided a contract before, Qualls says, but he gave him one for this project that was unsigned and contained few details other than materials and the $6,955 total cost. “We assumed Brian and his wife, Julie, would be doing the painting,” Qualls says. “But he brought in subcontractors who didn’t speak a word of English. It was dif!cult to communicate with them.”

Qualls says Bass’ crew didn’t apply primer to interior walls correctly, so paint’s rubbing off. On an exterior wall, Qualls says, the old taupe color shows through and Bass "atly refused to paint the outdoor carriage lights, despite Qualls pointing out during the !nal walkthrough that the crew had painted a wrought-iron fence and lamppost. “I joined Angie’s List because of this guy,” Qualls says. “Next time, I’ll have
a written contract ... with details on everything to be painted, and I will get at least three bids. I will very clearly state that subs aren’t
to be used.” Bass did not return calls to Angie’s List Magazine.

differently than the one Qualls experienced, Angie’s List recom-mends soliciting at least three bids, properly vetting contractors and subcontractors by checking references and verifying licen-sure (if applicable), bonding and insurance, and negotiating a detailed contract. It’s also important to visit a contractor’s completed projects.
Matt Welty of Carmel thought he’d adequately evaluated Indianapolis-based Exterior Home Concepts by checking with the
Better Business Bureau before contracting with the company last fall for roof repairs after a hail-storm. He says he hired Exterior after salesmen came to his door offering a free roof inspection and a contract that required payment only if his insurer approved a claim. But Welty says Exterior cashed his $8,700 insurance check and did no work.
Earlier this year, the Indiana attorney general !led a lawsuit against Exterior Home Concepts, accusing the company of collecting tens of thousands of dollars from at least 10 Hoosiers, including Welty, for roof repairs and not doing the work. “This

case serves as a reminder for homeowners to do their home-work by checking out the legitimacy of the contractor, obtaining a written contract, inquiring about the contractor’s bond and not paying for the entire cost of a project prior to its completion,” AG Greg Zoeller says in a press release.
The lawsuit against B-rated Exterior and its principals, Carrie Holmes and Donald Mayes, seeks $90,500 in restitution, plus civil penalties and fees. A notice alerts members that Exterior is excluded from searches on the List due to the AG lawsuit and for failing to respond to another member’s complaint, which landed the company in the Penalty Box. Phone numbers for Exterior are disconnected.
The attorney general says Exterior’s contracts violated state law because they failed to include required start and completion dates, name and contact informa-tion of someone to call in case of problems, and written notice of the consumer’s right to cancel the contract within three days after signing. In Indiana, the law requires all of those items to be included in a written contract for any job costing more than $150 that alters, repairs or modi!es a residential property. In addition, it requires home improvement contracts to outline cost, payment
Contracts 101Indiana law requires the following items to be included in a written contract for any job costing more than $150 that alters, repairs or modi!es a residential property:
Detailed job description.
Approximate start and completion dates.
Detailed outline of costs, including total project cost.
Contractor’s name, address and signature.
Name and contact information of someone to call in case of problems.
Written notice of the consumer’s right to cancel within three days of signing.
Angie’s List also suggests the contract:
Speci!es contractor and homeowner responsibilities.
Requires no more than one-third of the total cost upfront, unless custom materials are involved, and 10 percent withholding until the job is completed.
Includes payment penalties for missed completion dates. When paying, use a credit card if possible for better protec-tion against botched projects.
Outlines a procedure for work orders or changes to the initial agreement.
Itemizes materials list and any warranty information.
Comes with proof the contractor holds the appropriate licensing (if applicable), insurance and bonding.
Provides information on whether the contractor plans to use subcontractors.
Contains a termination clause describing terms under which the homeowner or contractor may end the job without penalty.

schedule, description of work and materials, and the contractor’s name, address and signature.
Local experts also say it’s important to be clear about the project’s scope before signing a contract. “It helps to set the customer’s expectations and to know they will get what they expect,” says Tom Booker, owner of A-rated Decks of Distinction in Brownsburg. After de!ning the project and setting a budget, pay close attention to the job descrip-tion in your contract, says David Paetzmann, an Indiana deputy
attorney general who handles consumer complaints. “You can have a contract that just says, ‘roo!ng will be provided.’ That tells you nothing,” he says. “What kind of shingles will be used? Will decking be replaced? Is there a breakdown of all the costs? That should be spelled out.”
A detailed contract provides protection for the homeowner and the contractor, says Jason Gettum, vice president of A-rated Gettum Associates, a remod-eling contractor in Greenwood. “The contract is the whole key,”
ind_covst_hiring_0512.indd 22 4/5/12 7:40:40 AM

he says. “Our contract is six pages long. It spells out all the steps, even what to do if there’s a dispute.” He also advises consumers to check a company’s track record before hiring. “You want to be sure that somebody is going to be around to service what they sell,” he says.
It’s also important to be sure you’re covered in case the contractor fails to pay subcon-tractors. According to the Insurance Information Institute, when a contractor secures a bond, it means they’ve arranged with a third party to reimburse customers if the contractor harms them !nancially because of shoddy work or failure to pay subcontractors. Homeowners can further protect their interests by requiring their contractor to provide lien waivers, which prevent subcontractors and suppliers from !ling a mechanic’s lien against the homeowner if the contractor fails to pay them.
Member John Cowger of Nora estimates he saved about $20,000 on his $77,000 home remod-eling project because he required B-rated S & Y Remodeling Group of Brownsburg to provide lien waivers from all subcontrac-tors. Before completing Cowger’s project, S & Y closed its doors in June 2010. Mike Young, part owner and president of S & Y, says the company grew too fast

and ran out of cash to complete projects. S & Y received a string of seven F reports from members, including Cowger’s, for work done in 2010, and a notice on its record alerts members that it’s out of business. In their reports, a few members mention losing money as a result of the business closing.
Young says he’s person-ally settled debts with former customers, including a settlement with the Cowgers, who !led a small claims suit over problems with the siding installed on their home by one of S & Y’s subcon-tractors. Young and his wife, Diane, started a new company, Renew Remodeling Co. in Avon, in November 2010. Renew is A-rated with six reports. Young says the new company will keep overhead low and only take on a few projects at a time so that the company grows more manageably.
Cowger’s wife, Diane, says Young did good work and the couple harbors no bad feelings toward him. But she thinks it’s important to research a contrac-tor’s !nancial background before hiring. “I would de!nitely want to know that,” she says. John also advises consumers to ask their contractor for a list of any subs to be used before signing a contract. “Have the contractor prove all subs are registered to do business in Indiana and are licensed for their respective work,” he says.
Worker etiquetteThe rules of contractor etiquette during a home improvement project typically come into play the !rst time a contractor asks to use your bathroom. Or when you !nd cigarette butts in your yard. Tom Jeffers of Pioneer Kitchens in Indianapolis says his employees don’t smoke on the job and they discuss bathroom privileges if needed. “My employees will rarely use [a client’s bathroom], but if they have to go, they will ask !rst,” he says.
Indianapolis member Brooke Paschali says she gave Fishers-based McCurdy Mechanical a D on Angie’s List in part because she found one of the workers’ discussion about religion to be inappro-priate. “I kept saying, ‘how’s it looking?’ trying to get him back to why he was here,” she says. McCurdy project manager Neal Cherba says staff now know “to keep conversations ‘light’ and generally about the work being performed.”
Some contractors don’t deal well with female homeowners, but Nell Hiday, of!ce manager for A-rated Tremain Corp., a kitchen and bath remodeler in Indianapolis, says female homeowners carry as much decision-making weight in her book as do males. “It’s the woman usually making the decisions,” she says.
When it comes to sharing competitor bids, Indianapolis member Jan Rugaber won’t do it. “I just want to keep it above board,” she says. “They will quote what they think they can do. I hate haggling.”

Photo by Brandon Smith | Rob Qualls says his two-page contract with Real Painters (one page shown here) was unsigned and contained few details.
Marty Wood, president of the Insurance Institute of Indiana, advises consumers to ask the contractor or subcontractor for proof of current liability and workers’ compensation insur-ance. Liability covers property damage and injuries caused by the contractor’s work. Workers’ comp, required for any business with employees, provides payments to injured workers for lost wages and medical services. Indiana requires proof of insurance before issuing licenses for plumbers, water well drillers and water well pump installers, but regulation of other residential trades, including electrical and general contractors, falls to individual communities. Homeowners may be held liable for damages if the contractor isn’t properly licensed, bonded and insured.
Don’t forget to actually read the contract before you sign it. Of the roughly 1,000 Angie’s List members who responded to a recent online poll about major home improvement projects, 10 percent say they didn’t sign a contract, 4 percent only glanced at the contract and 32 percent only reviewed it somewhat closely. More than a third say they solic-ited fewer than three bids.
Indianapolis member Jan Rugaber says she reviewed a two-page contract from A-rated Kiefer and Co. in Indianapolis
before hiring them for a $13,000 job to replace siding and paint her home’s exterior. “I think it’s very important,” she says. “It seems very basic. Why get a contract if you aren’t going to read it?”
Tom Jeffers makes sure his clients understand their contracts. After discussing a project, taking measurements and selecting materials, the president of A-rated Pioneer Kitchens in Indianapolis reads through the contract with the homeowner before both parties sign it. “We make sure everybody knows what’s expected of each other,” he says. “Then we don’t have problems.”

PREVENTIVE CARE GIVES Linda Frechette peace of mind. With a family history of breast cancer, the 56-year-old underwent her !rst mammogram 21 years ago, which led to the removal of a benign tumor. In November 2010 during an annual checkup, Dr. Joseph Beardsley, a highly rated gyne-cologist at Beech Grove Ob-gyn, uncovered issues with her thyroid and gallbladder.
Today, the Angie’s List member continues to receive preventive care. “It’s important just to stay on top of your own health because then there are no surprises,” Frechette says.
Members and doctors agree preventive care, including screening tests, is key to identifying potential problems. More than 40 percent of Angie’s List members who answered a recent online poll say preven-tive tests uncovered previously unknown health issues. Blood pressure and cholesterol checks are the most popular, according to poll respondents, followed by Pap smears and colonoscopies. Yet 30 percent who took the same poll say they avoided ones they knew they should’ve had.

cancer, diabetes and skin cancer, can be daunting, especially because medical groups across the country disagree on whether some of them are needed and the age testing should begin.
Experts say the best defense is to team up with a primary care doctor and decide when to tackle screenings based on your age and personal and family medical history. They also suggest doing your own research and discussing the bene!ts and risks with your provider to avoid overtesting.
Dr. Gary Larkin, state health commissioner, agrees people need to talk with their doctor because heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases and stroke make up the top Hoosier killers. “Preventive practices such as
cancer screenings, early treatment, vaccinations, addressing nutrition and physical activity, and stopping tobacco use have been demon-strated to reduce the burden of disease,” Larkin says. But he admits getting people to see a physician or undergo tests can be a challenge.
For years, Angie’s List member Stuart Meyer of Greenwood avoided doctors, anxious about what they might !nd. Then doctors discovered his wife had a large benign tumor that could’ve been caught earlier, if she hadn’t skipped an annual exam. Meyer, 47, says he changed his tune and
“It’s the foundation of medicine.”

developed a relationship with highly rated Dr. Ronald Bennett from A-rated American Health Network in Franklin. They discussed his family history and Bennett ordered a colonoscopy.
“My dad had precancerous polyps in his late 50s, and I have an uncle who died at 52 of colon cancer,” says Meyer, who adds the screening found two precancerous polyps that were removed. “If you know anybody that’s skipped going to the doctor and had problems, it really brings it home,” he says.
At highly rated Priority Physicians on the Northside, four doctors practice family and internal medicine under one roof where they focus on preventive care and building relationships. Patients, including member Dave Comer,
undergo an extensive three- to four-hour annual exam that includes a lengthy doctor consultation, physical and screenings, such as dermatologic scans, a treadmill stress test, and heart and lung scans.
The doctor’s goal is to catch and treat disease earlier, says Comer’s physician, highly rated internist Dr. Shelagh Fraser. Tests often unveil high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or in Comer’s case, calcium buildup in his arteries, she says. “In the "urry of everyday activity, these things that are asymptomatic, they get lost,” Fraser says.
The practice doesn’t bill insur-ance and charges patients an annual fee based on age. Comer and his wife each pay $5,500, which they say is money well spent. “Shelagh

actually knows who I am,” Comer says. “She spends a lot of time going over what your body’s been doing.”
Patients also need to stay on top of what tests they should receive, and should know that recom-mendations can change. In March, groups including the American Cancer Society, announced women should receive a Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer no more than every three years. This differs from earlier guidelines that recom-mended an annual test. Likewise, a few years ago the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force — an inde-pendent panel of primary care providers appointed by the federal government — raised the recom-mended age to start mammography screening from age 40 to 50.
The USPSTF bases its recom-mendations on scienti!c evidence, looking at the bene!ts and harms of each. It says mammograms pose the most bene!t with the least risk at age 50, and says there’s insuf!cient evidence to justify a prostate-speci!c antigen (PSA) test to detect cancer in men. Both tests, it says, can lead to unnecessary biopsies and surgeries.
This has caused controversy among medical groups such as the American Cancer Society. They say women should start mammograms at age 40 and suggest that men ages 50 and older discuss PSA screen-ings with doctors. Dr. Robert Smith, senior director for cancer control
with the ACS, doesn’t deny there are risks to screenings, but says their goal is to save lives by catching problems earlier. “We think the bene!ts outrank the harms and they say the harms outrank the bene!ts,” he says. Regardless, patients must be proactive in their health care.
The medical community agrees preventive care is the best and least expensive way to treat patients because it could reduce emergency room visits, acute care hospital admissions and chronic diseases. One insurance company is working to shift the focus toward preven-tion. In January, Indianapolis-based
WellPoint announced a new pay-for-performance program where doctors and hospitals can earn more money when they maintain or improve patient outcomes.
“Prevention efforts coupled with strong doctor-patient relationships pay off in terms of improved health and lower costs,” says Brandon Davis, WellPoint corporate commu-nications director. “We know [providers] can improve coordina-tion, prevention and wellness. It’s the foundation of medicine.”
Under the 2010 Affordable Care Act, most health insurance policies cover preventive services. Before

Screening recommendations from other medical groups**
Breast Cancer(Mammogram)
Women ages 50 to 74 should have a mammogram every 2 years.
Women ages 40 and older should have a mammogram every year.
Prostate Cancer(Prostate-Specific Antigen - PSA test)
No recommendation exists as there’s insufficient evidence for a PSA test in men younger than 75. It’s not recom-mended for men 75 and older.
Men should talk to their doctors about the risks and benefits of the PSA test starting at age 50. Black men and those with a family history should start at age 45.
Blood Pressure Adults 18 and older should be checked every 2 years if they have normal pressure; annually for others.
Adults 20 and older should have an annual screening or once every 2 years, if the reading is less than 120/80.
Cholesterol All men 35 and older, and women 45 and older with risk factors for heart disease should be tested. Men and women with increased risk should start at age 20. Repeat every 5 years.
Adults 20 and older should have a fasting lipoprotein profile every 5 years.
Cervical Cancer(Pap smear)
Women ages 21 to 65 should have a Pap smear every 3 years.
Women ages 21 to 29 should have a Pap smear every 3 years. Women ages 30 to 65 should have a Pap smear and HPV test every 5 years.
Colon Cancer(Fecal occult blood test, Sigmoidoscopy or Colonoscopy)
Adults, starting at age 50 and continuing until age 75 should be screened. Frequency varies by method, so talk with your doctor.
Adults 50 and older should be screened. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you.
Osteoporosis(Bone mineral density test)
Women 65 and older and younger women at greater risk of fractures need to be tested. Insufficient evidence exists for men.*
Testing should occur in women 65 and older and men 70 and older or for younger people with high risk factors, such as family history.*
Diabetes Asymptomatic adults with sustained blood pressure greater than 135/80 should be screened.*
All overweight adults or those with risk factors, such as family history, need to be screened every 3 years.
Skin Cancer Insufficient evidence exists for screening the general population.
All adults should complete a monthly self exam and high-risk patients should undergo an annual full-body skin screening by a physician.
Obesity All adults need to be screened. Those with a BMI of 30 or above should be offered intensive counseling and behavioral interventions.*

any screening, experts suggest checking with insurance to make sure it’s covered.
Some patients turn to in-store retail health clinics that play an increased role in preventive care and offer low-cost cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure tests for those who might not have time to schedule a visit with their doctor.
Larkin, the state health commis-sioner, says any check is better than none at all, but patients need to advocate for themselves to ensure their doctors receive information about visits outside their of!ces.
Tests at a walk-in clinic or special-ist’s of!ce could unveil signs of a larger problem or medications might need to be adjusted. “Most things are pretty routine, but there are times when sharing the right thing at the right time is critical,” says Dr. Stephen Jay, founding chair of the Department of Public Health at IU School of Medicine.
For 20 years, member Kimberly Schoff of McCordsville has seen A-rated internist Dr. Patricia Wesley in Carmel and undergoes regular preventive care such as a mammogram, biannual bone density screening and blood pres-sure check. Heart disease runs in her family, so she’s also undergone a baseline electrocardiogram, or EKG. “Preventive maintenance is a good thing,” says Schoff, who just wants to live a healthy life.
Wesley emphasizes the impor-tance of being proactive with your health. “Mammograms can !nd a cancer that can be treated and cured,” she says. “Cholesterol checks could prevent heart problems. There are too many conditions that can develop as you age that you can be unaware of.”

EVERY YEAR, GARDENERS want the latest and greatest plants in their yards and many of them rely on their landscapers and favorite garden centers to guide the selections. Now is prime planting season for Indianapolis-area gardeners, and local experts provided their recommendations for the latest atten-tion-grabbing perennials and shrubs.
ShrubsSmaller shrubs are very popular, especially in urban landscapes. In the suburbs, where houses get bigger and lots get smaller, dwarf shrubs also !nd a home. When planting real estate is at a premium, small shrubs that also "ower can deliver more bang for your buck, says Matt Irvin, vice president of nursery and retail operations at A-rated Salsbery Brothers Landscaping in Carmel.
One of Irvin’s favorite options is Proven Winners/ColorChoice Plants’ Lo & Behold Blue Chip butter"y bush, which he calls a blooming fanatic. “It’s a dramatic improvement over other butter"y bushes. It starts in late spring

and doesn’t stop.” The Blue Chip shrub’s local popularity is soaring — Irvin sold more than 700 last year. Happy in full sun and well-drained soil, Blue Chip gets about 30 inches tall and wide. It does best when only the branch tips are snipped off in spring rather than cutting the shrub to the ground like other butter"y bushes.
For a larger space, Irvin likes Limelight hydrangea, another intense bloomer with white, densely packed cone-shaped "owers that turn pink as they age. It’s been available for several years, but is still a best-seller for sun or shade. Limelight grows about 8 feet tall and wide. Little Lime, a new introduction, only reaches 5 feet tall and wide, but has the same great attributes as its taller cousin.
PerennialsAt Soules Garden on Indianapolis’ southside, co-owner Cynthia Miller has fallen in love with Double Pink Delight, one of the new and improved cone"owers. Cone"owers do best in full sun and average soil. “After many false starts from other [new] cone-"owers, this one totally delivers,” she says. “It develops quickly and it blooms the entire summer,” says Miller, who owns the highly rated garden center and nursery with her husband, Chris Wilhoite.
Wilhoite is in love with helle-bores, commonly called Christmas
or Lenten rose because of when they bloom. Hellebores are prized because they bloom from December into April and hold on to their "owers for months. They also are evergreen, retaining their leaves in winter. And, they are deer resistant.
Among his favorites: the Winter Jewel series, with rich hued "owers that embrace their names, such as Black Diamond, Onyx Odyssey
and Jade Tiger. He’s also fond of Hellebore Gold Collection, which started blooming in Indianapolis in December.
Hellebores tend to come as a series or collection because many are propagated by seed, which allows for variations in color. Hellebores are very tolerant of shade and dry soil. They also thrive in partly sunny spots. In their native Mediterranean and Southern regions of Europe, hellebores line hillsides.
Sometimes known as the Hoosier Gardener, Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp lives in Indianapolis. A freelance writer, her work appears in many publications, including The American Gardener. Her latest book, “The Visitor’s Guide to American Gardens,” is available through Cool Springs Press. Sharp, a director of the Garden Writers Association, also speaks about gardening throughout the Midwest.
Now is prime planting season for Indianapolis-area gardeners.

wellness at work

WHETHER YOU WORK OUT on a regular basis or play sports, there may come a day when your body yells at you through the pain: “Give me a break!” If you don’t listen, you could suffer an injury and be forced to take time off.
The most chronic overuse injuries are tendinitis, shin splints, tennis elbow and runner’s knee, while common sports injuries include ankle sprains, meniscus tears and ACL tears. Both types
of injuries can be a result of improper training and technique.
It’s important to let your muscles recover, and I recommend not working the same muscle group two days in a row. Athletes in training need to vary their workouts to prevent tears and strains, says Dr. Frank Wilson, who’s the founder of The Sports Medicine Institute of Indiana, which is highly rated.
If you keep beating the same muscles down, your body is

eventually going to break down. This is where cross training can be especially helpful for athletes.
Wilson says runners, for example, should take a day off and consider doing other activities such as stationary biking or swim-ming, which will cause less stress to their knees but will also allow them to get in a cardio workout.
Emma Faesi of Indianapolis began running 50 to 60 miles a week without any training and soon fell prey to pain in her right knee and lower left leg. “Listen to your body,” she says from experi-ence. “Toughing it out just makes a bad situation worse and will probably turn into more time away from the sport you enjoy.”
Emma took a break from running and sought treatment from highly rated Methodist Sports Medicine in Indianapolis. The 25-year-old’s therapist suggested a slow progression back into running once the pain was gone, and she is now on a running schedule developed by a running coach that includes a warm-up and cool-down, stretching, core workouts and strength training.
One of the most common mistakes I see in the gym is not
warming up, along with using too much weight, moving too fast or throwing weights around and using improper form or technique.
When you embark on a workout program or even new sport, hire a trainer who will guide you on proper form, which can help prevent injuries. Most trainers will point out imbalances in your body right away. They’ll probably suggest working your core and strength-ening those imbalances which will in turn improve your form as well. And when you’re in the gym, don’t worry about impressing other people by lifting heavy weights. Instead, focus on lifting with proper form and then slowly add more weight as you build muscle.
If you do suffer an injury or have chronic pain while you’re working out or playing a sport, see a doctor and follow his or her orders, whether it’s wearing a brace or taking time off from physical activity. “Proper diagnosis is the all important !rst step in the treat-ment of sports-related injuries,” Wilson says.
“It’s important to let your muscles rest and recover.”
Kelsey Taylor is a certi!ed personal trainer with the International Fitness Professionals Association, a sports nutritionist and a strength training instructor with more than 12 years of experience. For the past four years, she’s worked at Angie’s List as the wellness director serving 700-plus employees.

IT TOOK NO time at all for people to learn that dialing 800 before any long-distance phone number made the call toll-free. 911 is the go-to for emergencies, of course, and 411 became a common catchphrase to signify getting information. But when 888 came along, there was confusion. It meant toll-free, too, but many consumers didn’t quickly get it. Here are three more digits that haven’t caught on even though they’ve been available for !ve years: 811.
More commonly known as the “Call before You Dig” number, 811 connects callers to the nearest of 62 of!ces across the U.S. tasked with identifying underground utility lines to keep them from getting damaged.
Fewer than 5 percent of Americans surveyed in 2010 knew about 811, according to the federal government. We rightly thought our members would be better informed than that, but a recent online member survey showed only 11 percent of respondents knew about 811.
Service companies on Angie’s List that have jobs requiring them to dig into the ground were better informed. Fifty-four percent of those online poll respondents knew about 811 and many said it was an important part of their safety programs.
Homeowners and service companies need to know about 811 for a few reasons.1. You or your work crew could be hurt
if you damage certain lines. 2. You could be held liable for damages and !nes
should you or someone you hire fail

to call before digging and cause damage to utility lines.
3. The federal government is calling for stepped up enforce-ment of the call-before-you-dig laws, which vary in every state.“Our goal is to make 811
as well known as 911,” says DOT Administrator Cynthia Quarterman, who leads the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the agency responsible for hazardous mate-rials transportation oversight. “We are reaching out to the public, especially home renovators and small excavation companies to stay safe by calling 811 before initiating any project that involves putting a shovel into the ground.”
You might be surprised by the range of projects that require you to call — it’s anything from major construction and excavation work
to building a deck, planting a tree, and putting in a fence, basketball goal or swing set. You can learn more at call811.com.
Death and injury are rarely caused by ruptured water, electric or telecommunications lines, but as many as 200,000 service disruptions happened in 2010 because someone didn’t make the 811 call. That same year, there were 74,000 gas leaks caused by damage to natural gas lines. Five people were killed and 11 injured in those incidents caused by digging. Data for 2011 isn’t yet available, but one incident in Ohio in late 2011 resulted in one death and six injuries.
The good thing is that it couldn’t be easier to do the right thing. Calling 811 will likely mean you don’t need to call 911. How’s that for some good 411?
