Each year, Victoria welcomes more than 5,000

guests to the annual Australian International Beer

Awards and Autumn Beer Festival.

The largest brewer in the country is located here

and the State is home to a growing number of

innovative microbrewers.

Microbrewing is a thriving, niche industry leading

the way in developing innovative, full flavoured,

premium products which cater for the adventurous

tastes of the discerning beer drinker.

The new edition of the Beer Lovers’ Guide to

Victoria’s Microbreweries provides an opportunity

to focus on the rapid development of the brewing

sector and to highlight Victoria’s leading role in

developing new flavours and tastes.

Over twenty breweries are featured, with travel

directions to allow you to explore the range of

boutique breweries in Victoria and learn about the

art of brewing the perfect beer. Many also offer

tours, tastings, accommodation and fine dining.

The specialist microbrewers have mastered age-old

methods using all natural ingredients and I join

them in hoping you will enjoy their range of craft

brews responsibly.

Victoria is the home ofbrewing in Australia.

victoria’s microbrewery industry

Microbrewers have apassion for craft brewing, and wish to share theirenthusiasm and theirbeer ~ with you.

Victoria’s boutiquebreweries provideyou with greaterchoice and a varietyof fresh, fullflavoured beers madelocally by Victorianproducers.

There are currently morethan 20 microbreweries inVictoria, with new onesopening regularly. Eachmicrobrewer looks at theirbeer differently, and like wine, there is a real science to makingbeer ~ just one degreetemperature difference here andthere can make a big difference.

Microbrewers are also keen toeducate you on the range andflavour characteristics of beer ~

and how to match a finebrew with fine dining. For example, a rich,

full flavoured beer willcomplement either a

pasta or roast whereas acrisp, fresh lager willcomplement a light lunch.Spicy meals are best pairedwith an aromatic or pilsnerstyle beer but also contrastnicely with a malt-heavy,creamy brew.

The microbrewers ofVictoria hope you find

the information in the latestedition of the Beer Lovers’Guideto Victoria’s Microbreweriesuseful, and look forward toenjoying an ale with you in thenear future.

An integral part of this quality offering isBeechworth Brewery which was first established in1855 at the height of the Gold Rush.

The original Beechworth Brewery (right) operateduntil 1873. Production then ceased and thebrewery’s pioneering spirit lay dormant for 130years. In 2003 lifelong brewer Garry Wallacebrought Beechworth Brewery back to life.He wanted to create some ‘living history’.

Beechworth Brewery makes Real Beer. Real Beer isnatural beer with no added chemicals, preservatives, colourings or heading agents. It is not filtered orpasteurised and uses local spring water, maltedgrains, hops and yeast. Real Beers are ALIVE andbottle conditioned. Expect to find a sediment…gold miners certainly did!

The range of hand-crafted, full-flavoured ales andlagers offer a delicious taste of history. Beechworthhas a long and diverse history of brewing. Comeand experience the delicious aromas, rich fullflavours, smooth textures, and long aftertastes thatare all characteristic of Real Beer.

Inspections of the new brewery in the NicholasHotel are most welcome at any time. Tastings andsales are available at the hotel in normal openinghours, and through other quality licensed outlets.

Come and have a few real beers, and then don’t letthe facts get in the way of a good story. Enjoy!

In beautiful north-east Victoria you will find history alive anddoing well. You will also discover gourmet foods, wines and beers.

Of course, the hotel itself datesback a little further than that ~Bill Bell, the publican, wasactually born within its walls!

The brewery is built in thetraditional style of copper andwood, and features the use of

brickwork from the original Carlton and UnitedBrewery (CUB) chimney.

Bill and head brewer Paul Arthur encourage you to‘try before you buy’ with tasting trays available.

A leisurely walk from Melbourne’s CBD, Bell’sHotel and Brewery invites you to accompany yourbeer tasting with something from the menu.

Tours of the showpiece brewery (a far cry from theold bath Bill made his first beer in!) are availableby arrangement and offer a great opportunity toenhance your appreciation! Keep an eye out for theantique bottling machine.

Bell’s Hotel and Brewery has developed anassortment of brews. Their infamous Black BanBitter is so named following the black-listing of thepub during the Albert Park protests.

Bill has recently opened a wonderfully refurbisheddining room which is attracting a vibrant lunchtimecrowd… come and see for yourself!

They are more fruity than typicalAustralian beers and most imported(high volume brands).Because we get more of the grain fruitcharacters in our beers they aregenerally less hop driven and thereforenot as bitter or harsh, this makesthem great with food.

The beers are not sweet in terms ofresidual sugar but are sweet because we getrichness from the grain during the mashingprocess. We are a microbrewery and not aboutique brewery ~ i.e. our beers are well made, clean and consistent.

So, in late 2001 when Buckley’s Beerswas conceived, it was considered byits founders to have Buckley’s chanceof really making it. A few years onand the Yarra Valley brewery is goingfrom strength to strength.

Making the most of olderequipment and a 15 Hectolitrebrewing length, Buckley’s Beerscreates an exciting range of award-

winning pilsners, ales and the dark, and serious,Buckley’s Bitter.

One philosophy behind the brews is, as thefounders themselves say, ‘Buckley’s is not a beerfor wimps!’ The distinctive bitterness and strengthcan be recognised across the range ~ the full-bodied, well-balanced, hoppy flavours willdefinitely hit the spot.

Add to this the opportunity to observe and assist inthe brewing process (most Saturdays byappointment), not only can you enjoy the brewsbut be involved in their very creation.

Quite seriously, you have Buckley’s chance of notenjoying a session at Buckley’s Beers ~ poor oldWilliam himself would probably like to join you!

The exploits of ‘wild man’ William Buckley, who lived on theBellarine Peninsula early in the 19th century, led to thewell known Australian expression… ‘Buckley’s Chance’,meaning no chance at all.

Buffalo Brewery began brewing in 1902and is recognised as the oldestcontinuously operating brewery inAustralia. Today, the Buffalo Brewerytakes a very hands-on approach to itsbeer production ~ being the onlybrewery grinding their own wheat andbarley, and utilising pure water from aspring on the property.

Combine this holistic approach withspectacular, tranquil surrounds and a

powerful history, and you have anexperience you will reflect on for many a day.

If you should get hungry while sampling the awardwinning beers, you might not be able to resist themouth-watering, locally raised ‘kingsize’ steak. TheBoorhaman Hotel is large enough to cater for touristcoaches, car, motorbike and Probus clubs fromAustralia wide, and the dining room has an entry inthe 2006 ‘Foodies Guide to metro and ruralVictoria’. A large, fully enclosed lawned beer gardencan cater for up to 300 people with a huge BBQ.

Lily Arrabela Cherry, reputed lady-friend of one ofthe Kelly gang, graces the Buffalo Brewery’s labels, and beckons you to discover more.

The hoteliers are pleased to oblige with acomprehensive talk on their brewing techniques andan insight into the history of the area. The breweryitself gets a mention in the international touristdirectory ~ Lonely Planet and was voted BestCountry Pub in Victoria Without Gaming in 2001.

Pure, fresh and 100% natural, with a no risk, noadditives or preservatives guarantee, we are the onlybrewery that does it like it used to be done.

Back in the 80’s, Matilda Bay, the firstbrewery to open since WWII,pioneered craft beer and created thefirst wheat beer in Australia, RedbackOriginal, introducing drinkers to awhole new world of taste. Some 20years later we continue to push theboundaries of beer and create brandnew styles and give our owninterpretation to some weird andwonderful beer styles.

We brew classic styles such as RedbackOriginal (Bavarian-style wheat beer), BohemianPilsner (Champion Lager AIBA 2005), and Rooftop(Vienna-style red lager) alongside the delicious BeezNeez, our own unique honey wheat beer.

For true beer aficionados we produce our Brewer’sReserve Range of Dogbolter Dark Lager and AlphaPale Ale ~ now both available year round.

At the Matilda Bay Garage Brewery we producebeers on a much smaller scale than at our mainbrewery in Fremantle and can really extend ourcreativity. We’ve recently come up with RedbackCristal, Barking Duck and Crema.

Our series of ‘out there’ beers so far includesBarking Duck (which won third best in the world)and Crema, a world first, a pale unfiltered beer ~brewed with premium organic Australian grownArabica coffee beans.

And to top it all off, we’ve also added to the Redbackrange with the launch of Redback Cristal to allow thenext generation of drinkers to discover craft beer.

Cheers!

Our micro-brewery is just a quackand waddle from Lake Purrumbete. The crystal clear waters are stockedwith salmon and trout, and are afavourite home for a variety ofwater birds, such as kingfishers, teals, musk ducks, grebes, cormorants, pelicans andoccasionally, Australian Shelducks,

The brewery is situated in a renovated old dairy ~part of Purrumbete Homestead, a Heritage listedproperty. The first pioneers in the Western Districtchose to settle here in 1838, and we believe wehave taken up some of that pioneering spirit.

Our traditional styled ales are made from allnatural ingredients, nothing artificial, nothing to getin the way of real flavours and aromas. We startwith fresh rainwater, add malt, hops and yeast. Then we fret like a mother duck, until the beerturns out just right. Our beers are unfiltered, andnaturally carbonated in the bottle, which means it’sreal beer.

The regulars are Pale, Amber and Porter, withlimited release ales such as Golden Dragon ~ astrong Celtic ale, and The Ox ~ Imperial Stout.

Located in the Western District’s fertile, ‘lakes and craters’region, Red Duck is passionate about brewing fine ales.
