This past year has seen record prices for all classes of cattle. Purebred bull sales have set new highs. The demand for quality genetics has never been stronger. Do you know the investment you have in each pregnancy on your ranch? Most producers can tell you what they paid for a bull or a unit of semen, but can they tell you the cost to get their females pregnant?It has been a good time to be in the purebred bull selling business. Over the last two years, the average price of a purebred bull has nearly doubled for most of the major breeds.

Keep in mind, the vast majority of these bulls are young, unproven sires. They have excelled in their contemporary groups and against their herdmates. They have been weighed, measured, ultrasounded and fertility checked. But still, we will not truly know their value as a sire until after they have produced a large number of progeny over the next few years.

When thinking of the cost of a new bull, most only consider the purchase price. But looking deeper into the total expenses associated with owning and maintaining that new herd sire shows a clearer picture of the cost.

When the costs are then compared to the number of females exposed per year along with the pregnancy rate (a bull does not settle every cow), you can begin to see the costs per pregnancy associated with your new herd sire.

Given a $4000 herd sire exposed to 25 cows per year with a 90% pregnancy rate, you come up with an average cost per pregnancy of $72.93. If the pregnancy rate drops to 85%, the cost increases to $77.22. Keep in mind this is assuming you use a bull for at least three years.

Now let’s consider the cost per pregnancy using proven sires in a Fixed Timed AI (FTAI) Program.

As you can see, the cost of a FTAI program is extremely competitive when compared to using a bull in natural service. Add to this the value of using proven sires that have sired thousands of progeny in hundreds of herds, you have added value to your next calf crop while reducing the uncertainties of using an unproven young sire.

Data compiled from the Missouri Show Me Select Heifer Program shows the increased value of AI. In Tier One, the bred heifers are out of Natural Service (NS) sired females. Those bred AI returned an added value of $146.

In Tier Two, the bred heifers were out of AI bred females. If they were bred Natural Service, they added $237 in value. If they were carrying an AI sired calf, they were worth an additional $357. That’s real money earned by producers who captured the value of their efforts to utilize AI in their programs.

peRfORMAnCe dAtABIRTH WT. (BW): The weight of a calf taken within 24 hours after birth. ADJUSTED WEANING WEIGHT (WW): An unshrunk, off-the-cow weight adjusted to 205 days of age and to a mature-dam age equivalence.ADJUSTED YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): An unshrunk weight adjusted to 365 days of age.SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE: A measure of testes size obtained by measuring the distance around the testicles in the scrotum with a circular tape. Related to semen-producing capacity and age at puberty of female sibs and progeny.FRAME SCORE: A score based on subjective evaluation of height or actual measurement of hip height. This score is related to slaughter weights at which cattle should attain a given quality grade or attain a given amount of fat thickness.HETEROZYGOUS: Genes of a specific pair (alleles) are different in an individual (e.g., Aa).HOMOZYGOUS: Genes of a specific pair (alleles) are alike in an individual (e.g., AA or aa). POLLED: Naturally hornless cattle. SIRe evALuAtIOn dAtAEXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD): The difference in performance to be expected from future progeny of a sire, compared with that expected from future progeny of the average bull in the same test. EPD is an estimate based on progeny testing and is equal to one-half the estimate of breeding value obtainable from the progeny test records. EPDs for growth traits are generally expressed in pounds, either as a plus difference or minimum difference from the population average. EPDs are generally reported in the units of measure of the trait, (e.g., pounds, cm, cm2, percent, etc.)ACCURACY (ACC): The reliability that can be placed on the expected progeny difference (EPD). An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability.BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Calf weight at birth adjusted to a mature dam equivalent. Expected progeny performance is reported in pounds. The EPD value predicts the difference in average birth weight of a bull’s calves compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average birth weights while a negative value (-) indicates lighter-than-average birth weights.CALVING EASE (DIRECT): The ease with which a bull’s calves are born to first-calf heifers. A first-calf heifer is defined as a female calving for the first time at 33 months of age or less. Expected progeny differences are reported as deviations in the percent unassisted births. When comparing calving ease EPDs of two sires, the larger EPD indicates a higher percent of unassisted births for calves sired by this bull.WEANING WEIGHT EPD (WW): A sire’s expected progeny difference (lb.) for 205-day, mature dam equivalent weaning weight. Expected progeny performance is reported in pounds. CARCASS evALuAtIOnCARCASS WEIGHT EPD (CW): A predictor, expressed in pounds, of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny at a given end point .MARBLING EPD (MARB): An expression, as a fraction, of the differences in a subjective USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny at a given end point.RIBEYE AREA EPD (REA): A predictor, expressed in square inches, of the differences in rib eye area of a sire’s progeny at a given end point.FAT THICKNESS EPD (FT): A predictor, expressed in inches, of the differences in fat thickness of a sire’s progeny, between the 12th and 13th ribs, at a given end point.SHEAR EPD: An EPD developed from the Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF) test where the pounds of Force are measured to shear a steak.
