Born at the time of the Industrial Revolution, Isambard Kingdom Brunel is by far the UK’s greatest engineer, most famous for building the Great Western Railway, and shaping the landscape of Great Britain as we know it today.
Brunel’s infl uence is clear throughout Bristol, having designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge across the River Avon and also was appointed as chief engineer to work on the line linking London to Bristol.
In 1837, Brunel was responsible for the design and construction of the Great Western, the fi rst steamship to embark on transatlantic travel from Bristol to New York. The Great Steamship Company was established in 1838 and was the fi rst iron steamship to cross the Atlantic, making more than 60 crossings within eight years.
In 1843, Brunel designed a new steamship which would quickly overshadow the greatness of the Great Western. The SS Great Britain was launched as the world’s fi rst iron-hulled, screw propeller-driven, steam-powered passenger liner and is considered to be the fi rst truly modern and revolutionary ship ever built. The ship was 332ft in length, more than 100ft longer than any ship previously built and with the main intention to provide luxury transportation for passengers from Britain to New York.
However, due to fi nancial diffi culties and a navigational error, the ship only ran for three years. Later, in 1881, the Great Britain was used to carry immigrants to Australia until she was badly damaged in a storm, forcing her into retirement to the Falkland Islands, where she spent the next period of her life as a fl oating warehouse.
Eventually, after years of service and mistreatment, The SS Great Britain was abandoned in Sparrow Cove, a bay near Port William in the Falkland Islands. She was left to decay for almost 30 years in Sparrow Cove, but was not forgotten, as a rescue mission was organised to return her to the UK and restore her to her previous glory.
As the SS Great Britain arrived in Britain, crowds, including Prince Philip, gathered to welcome the ship back to her birthplace in Bristol where she was repaired and restored back to her former glory.
Today, the SS Great Britain resides in The Brunel Institute in Bristol and is funded and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The centre holds all kinds of events to inform you of the SS Great Britain’s rich and intriguing history. To fi nd out more, visit:www.ssgreatbritain.org.

Taking place from noon until 5 pm on Saturday 18 May, the Windmill Hill City Farm’s Spring Festival brings together a diverse and diverting range of activities and attractions including live music, food stalls, face-painting, cookery, storytelling, singing, and drumming workshops.
Organiser Simone Dougall says: “Our Spring event is a community festival for the city’s people, with bands, musicians, market stalls, children’s workshops and everyone coming together from across Bristol to create a warm, community event at the beginning of the summer.”
With this aim in mind, the music stage at the Spring Festival will feature a stunning showcase of the city’s young talent to inspire local kids, teens and young people. New Generation Takeover in partnership with Bristol’s BIMM Music College (Brighton Institute of Modern Music) and Remix are running the music stage and promise to give us a real treat with great performances from young artists from each organisation.
NGT are experienced young event organisers who have worked with various festivals such as Glastonbury, Shambala, Brisfest and the Greenman festival so it is a real privilege to have them at the WHCF Spring Festival.
Remix is part funded by the Foundation for Youth Music and aims to provide music making opportunities to 0-25 year olds, in particular those who have had limited access to such resources in the past.
Jon Harper, Music Industry Outreach Manager / Lecturer at BIMM Bristol, said,
“We are proud to be involved with Windmill Hill City Farm Spring Festival and the New Generation Takeover helping to promote community-focused events that showcase upcoming new music from our beautiful city.”
In addition to this musical treat there is a plethora of other activities on off er.
Keen gardeners will be excited to hear that the Farm is taking part in the Chelsea Fringe – the Hearty Gardeners and volunteers, along with resident artist Lisa Yardley, will be working on weird and wonderful ideas for entries.
For children, the Farm’s Forest School will be teaching them great outdoor skills such as woodworking, and there will be face-painting, henna tattoos, hair wraps,
and a kids’ craft tent. Poco Drom will be singing Spring songs for the little ones and Chango Music will be providing drumming lessons for those who really want to let off steam.
Special visitors on the day include owls from Avon Owls, and HorseWorld will be providing a pair of donkeys who will no doubt enjoy a day out on the Farm!
All this plus numerous stalls manned by local craftspeople, community organisations and interests.
Last but not least there will be a wide range of food and drink on off er. The Farm’s own café will be providing some pop-up surprises and there will be outdoor cookery demos. A bar will be laid on by local event caterers Refresh West.
The last word goes to Simone: “This year’s festival promises to be the best ever and will be a great day out for all the family. We are urging people to come down to the Spring Festival, especially those that haven’t ever been before. It promises to be a fantastic day out!”

Gardening is one of those things that take a lot of care and attention, and if you are otherwise occupied with taking care of the kids or busy in work, then when you get that hour to yourself, you want to spend it in blissful peace rather than pulling up those weeds.
The key to keeping your garden looking like a paradise but remaining low maintenance is to use plants that need hardly any attention and bloom throughout the year. If you want some easy-to-care-for fl owers to brighten up your garden then planting some bulbs will ensure that your garden will be bright and cheerful each spring. Flowers like Daff odils, Tulips and Snowdrops are perfect fuss-free fl owers as they come into fl ower at the beginning of February and last up until May; while other fl owers, like Primroses, will fl ower in May and last through the summer months.
Herb gardens are easy to maintain, too. Herbs like Lavender and Rosemary fl ourish throughout the year and will fi ll your garden with the perfumed scents of the South of France. Lavender and Rosemary also require very little watering as they are both plants that survive well in hot countries. Herbs like Mint or Parsley will require a bit more tending too, as they will need pruning if we have had a lot of wet weather.
If you’re looking for a greener fuss-free garden then bear in mind that plants that need a minimum amount of pruning and attention. Plants like conifers, palm trees and ferns have their own distinctive shape, so you can leave them to it.
If you want a piece of greenery that fl owers a little though, shrubs like Mexican Orange Blossom and Honeysuckle are shrubs that will give your garden seasonal fl owering and perfumed scents that you can enjoy, especially on a summer’s evening, when you’re having your BBQ.
Mowing your lawn once every week is a long and arduous task. Having a lawn is something you do have to keep up if you want your garden to look tidy at all times.
Reducing your lawn space is a good idea to keep the mowing to a minimum, so think about paving some of your garden with brickwork detailing or stylish paving slabs. Likewise, using garden furniture or structures as a focal point in your garden will also minimise the amount of garden you have to tend to.
Any garden will need at least a little bit of maintaining, but hopefully, if you invest in some Honeysuckle plants and garden furniture, then you will be one step closer to gaining your fuss-free garden of paradise.

With the increase in the cost of fuel in the last few years, you would want to do everything you could to save your money on fuel and save the environment while you’re at it.
KEEP YOUR TYRES INFLATED
Under-infl ated tyres increase the drag on your car, therefore increasing how many times you will have to visit the petrol station. You can check the correct pressure for your tyres in your manufacturer’s guide.
DROP A FEW POUNDS
Before you set off , take a look in the back of your car. If it’s cluttered with lots of things then de-cluttering your boot will lighten your car ,meaning your car won’t have to work as hard.
REMOVE ROOF RACKS
If you remove your roof rack or roof box this will dramatically reduce your wind resistance and drag on your car.
TURN YOUR AIR-CON DOWN
Air conditioning increases the amount of fuel you use. If you are only travelling a short distance at a low speed then it is more effi cient to drive with your windows
down, whereas a long-distance journey at a fast speed using your air conditioning is far more benefi cial.
TURN YOUR ENGINE OFF
If you come to a junction or another stop and you can see that you’re going to be stopped there for a while, then it may be a good idea to turn your engine off while it’s safe. Keeping your engine running could run the risk of your car overheating and wasting fuel.
REDUCE THE AMOUNT YOU BRAKE
When you brake it turns your fuel into heat and brake dust therefore wasting the fuel you have just used. Allowing your car to slow down naturally is far more effi cient as your vehicle will drive from its stored momentum and energy.
GET THE BEST PRICES FOR YOUR FUEL
At the end of the day, it all comes down to money. Although this may not be convenient at all times, before you hit the red, research in your local area where the cheapest prices for fuel are at that time. In today’s current fi nancial climate, it’s inevitable that prices for fuel with fl uctuate but as long as you can fi nd the best price at the time, then you will be saving some money. Keep hold of any fuel vouchers or discounts you come across too, as these will help.
