Millions across the globe suffer from conditions that are preventable and/or treatable. Outbreaks and pandemics of emerging and re-emerging diseases have occurred throughout history and are here to stay. Case studies in this course will highlight the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Ebola, HIV, Zika and select noncommunicable diseases which can also impact these outbreaks and pandemics. Students will take on the role of a”global health detective” to examine social, political, economical, cultural and environmental determinants that influence outbreaks and pandemics. They will also explore about global/ local institutions and systems involved in preparedness and response. The course uses a combination of group activities, role plays, lectures and guest speakers. One major group activity will be a simulation exercise about “preparing and responding” to an outbreak or pandemic, using a multidisciplinary perspective. All majors are encouraged to enroll.
