Purpose

The purpose of this presentation is to:

➢ Outline the MILCON program project to renovate and create a 21st Century Learning Environment for the students served by Bechtel ES.

➢ Present the decision as to where and how to temporarily house Bechtel Elementary school students for the duration of the military construction project has significant community ramifications.

➢ Decisions were made jointly with US Army Corps of Engineers, Marine Corps Installations – Pacific and the DoDEA Pacific South district

Introduction

▪ Problem:

▪ Major military construction project to transform Bechtel

Elementary School (BES) into a 21st Century School.

Timing is dictated by the Fiscal Year for which the funding

is allocated. The project start cannot be postponed.

▪ Demolition / construction work is so extensive that

students & staff will have to relocate to a temporary

location for the duration of the project. Safety is a critical

concern

▪ How do we provide a learning environment that will

support teaching and learning for the Bechtel ES

community and retain its identity as a school.

Bechtel ES Changes

Demolition of existing building 4,066 sq.m. or 43,766 sq.ft.

New Construction – 7,525 sq.m. or 70,493 sq.ft. Net increase = 37,234 sq.ft.

Renovation for 70,493 sq. ft. Total Area of New/Renovated School = 107, 727 sq.ft.

• The 21st century teaching and learning model of studios and learning neighborhoods is created along with group learning areas, on-to-one teaching spaces and staff collaboration areas.

• The Commons / Multipurpose Room increases the cafeteria capabilities of the school to support a population of 850 students.

• A new Information Center.

• Adds room for specialists, Special Education service providers and conference rooms.

• All covered passage within the facility is provided.

• There is covered main entry and a bridged entry from bus drop off and loading areas.

How Will the Necessary Swing

Space be Created?

▪ Location: By Using the Existing Ryukyu MS Facility to have

the Bechtel ES students & staff

▪ Ryukyu MS has a functional capacity of 1150 students. This

will hold the 800+ Bechtel ES students and approximately 250

to 280 middle school students, to include the students who

currently come from Camps McTureous and Courtney

▪ Ryukyu MS has adequate facilities to support the population

to include classrooms, information center, cafeteria, art, music

and physical education facilities.

▪ Bechtel ES and Ryukyu MS administrators have developed a

plan for the use of the building to provide an effective

educational environment for all of the students.

Logistical / Facility Requirements

Requirements to Utilize RMS:

▪ Some restroom modifications for Kindergarten,

Preschool Services for Children with Disabilities (PSCD),

and Sure Start Students

▪ Additional buses to transport students

▪ Playground items

▪ Relocation of existing, right sized, furniture and

equipment for the Bechtel ES students
