Project: Duane Physics Building - Renovation & Upgrades

Owner: University of Colorado at Boulder

Client: Davis Wince, Ltd. Architecture

Location: Boulder, CO

Size: 8,000 SF

Completion: 2015

PROJECT OVERVIEW:Part of the original Duane Physics Educational Building, the G140 remodel enhances the educational environment by modifying an outdated space originally used as a library into an academic environment that is usable for lecture, private student and facility meeting space, as well as Graduate Student office area.

Over the life of the building, other remodeling projects had changed the building use in several areas without providing system level modifications. During the current project, it was discovered the built-up air handling system, which provided conditioned air to zone terminals in the remodel and adjacent spaces in the building wing, was not configured to provide adequate ventilation. On top of this, the existing air handling system consisted of several components nearing the end of their useful life, was not providing original design airflows due to duct configuration, and did not have adequate provisions to measure or pre-condition outside air as zone heating and cooling demands within the building changed.

BGCE’S WORK:BGCE provided mechanical and plumbing engineering, and construction administration services for the approximately 8,000 sq.ft. G140 renovation. Additionally, BGCE provided building investigation to confirm building space use and ventilation requirements, then designed complex modifications to the air handling system that included modifying cooling coils, fans, controls, and the addition of steam piping from the basement to serve a new pre-heat coil. The central plant chilled water and steam systems are distributed through the building to energy recovery ventilation air handlers and are controlled by a campus wide Siemens control system.

CLIENT BENEFITS:• Today, the air handling system provides required code ventilation to

not just the G140 remodel, but to the entire building wing, even during cold winter months.

• Varying speed controls allow efficient operation throughout the entire range of building design conditions.

• The renovated G140 space is inviting to students and faculty and provides an environment that fosters cooperation and learning.

AURARIA HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER TIVOLI STUDENT UNIONPROJECT PROFILE

Project: Tivoli Student Union Counseling Center

Owner: Auraria Higher Education Center

Client: Pahl Architecture

Location: Denver, CO

Size: 5,000 SF

Completion: 2012

PROJECT OVERVIEW:In order to provide increased counseling space and serve AHEC students better, the existing counseling center, located in the North Classroom Building, was planned to be relocated to the 4th floor of the Tivoli Building.

BGCE’S WORK:Our team modified the existing Tivoli infrastructure to accommodate the new counseling center. This included providing new electrical distribution, security, telecommunications, fire/life safety, and HVAC systems. We discovered through interviews with the AHEC facilities staff that there were comfort issues in this space. These issues were analyzed and a solution was incorporated into the final design.

CLIENT BENEFITS:This facility is now able to provide better counseling services to the campus students. While providing an up-to-date modern facility with superior HVAC zoning and electrical distribution, we were able to mirror the existing fan coil unit systems that already serve this space. Doing so allowed us to reuse the existing fan coil unit infrastructure to the greatest extent possible with minimal new infrastructure required. This resulted in a streamlined and efficient design that will meet and exceed the Owners’ needs once construction is completed.

The electrical panels were replaced in order to maintain the required branch circuiting for the counseling center’s needs and the existing panel feeders were maintained since they were found to be sufficient for the needs of the space. A new telecommunication closet and associated fiber connection was provided to serve this space when it was found that the existing communications infrastructure was insufficient to accommodate the counseling center.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:Due to space restrictions, noise issues and the pending Library renovation, the Access Center need to relocate. The ground level of the Plaza Building was selected for the project due to its central campus location, accessibility, and available space to fit their programming needs and expectations. .

BGCE’S WORK:BGCE’s provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing/fire protection engineering for the renovation to provide a new, open area testing area and individual testing room and spaces to fit the student’s Access Center needs. In addition, the public restrooms just outside the Access Center were totally renovated to make it handicapped accessible to the students and staff.

The project included new HVAC system components with low noise a primary system selection requirement, new LED lighting throughout the majority of the space, design of a CCTV camera system to observe the testing areas, a panic alarm system to directly notify campus police if the need arises and a fire alarm design to expand the existing fire alarm system into the remolded space to provide fire alarm notification to the Access Center users.

CLIENT BENEFITS:At the end of the project the Access Center was in a new location that had significantly quieter testing and office areas, better lighting to enhance the testing and student assistance areas and a new security system to meet their needs and expectations.
