Speaking specifically to the Winter Activity Day, we are really excited about the various choices students will have. We are hoping to send two or three buses to Mansfield skiing or snowboarding. Though this is the most expensive option, it includes a lesson and is much cheaper as a school excursion. Skating and bowling will also be a popular choice. Report cards are being sent home on February 6. With approximately five months left in the school year, and the second term just beginning, there is still plenty time to improve work habits and meet the goals which have been established. Any parents wishing an interview are asked to contact their child’s teacher. Students are encouraged to continue using their agendas to record all tests, assignments and projects, and upcoming events. A sense of responsibility is something everyone encourages in the students. I want to welcome our music teacher back to Beatty- Fleming. We are very excited to have Mrs. Cooper return after bringing a second child to her family. Help your family stay warm this winter Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when working or playing outdoors: Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school. Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body. Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc. Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself when doing vigorous activities. Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia. If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia. Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

In January the North Peel Physical Health Education Association (NPPHEA) basketball

league season began. The Panther boys had an exciting start to their season, opening with back to

back wins against Sunny View M.S. and Allan Drive M.S. Unfortunately, the boys had a small

stumble, and suffered a 1 point loss to Balmoral P. S. This leaves the boys with a 2-1 record with

5 games to go. In February the boys will continue their season with upcoming home games against

Walnut Grove on Thursday the 5th and with Greenbriar M.S. (date TBD).

The girls have also begun preparing for their upcoming tournament. As the girls will compete in

an 8 team tournament on February 24th, Mrs. Routhier and Mr. Zepotoczny are both hard at

work preparing a young and talented squad.

In addition to basketball, the Panthers have been working hard in the Hockey club. With the

dedication of morning practices at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesdays over the past 8 weeks, the Panthers

are preparing for their upcoming Tournament at Cassie Campbell on February 10th. The team

looks to make the final, which would be held at 7:45 on Friday February 13th. Go Panthers!

In a busy month, the Panthers also worked hard on the courts, as the team prepared for and

participated in the NPPHEA badminton tournament held at Fletcher's Meadow Secondary

School. Thanks to the hard work of Mr. Hunter and the dedication of the Panthers, the team was

extremely successful. The girls won the overall team championship and banner, winning both the

doubles and singles titles, the boys played great too, finishing with the bronze in doubles.

Congratulations to all the Panthers, players and coaches, for an outstanding January!

In the gym classes, the student finished their basketball unit, where they continued to learn

strategies for success in Territorial/Invasion games, such as moving to open space, making short

passes and communicating among one another. These strategies were applied while learning skills

on the basketball court and are now continuing into Ball hockey, where they will look to apply the

same strategies with different skills.

In intramurals, the 3 on 3 basketball was a huge hit, where 80-100 kids could be found actively

participating and enjoying the ‘intense’ competition. The teams will now look to continue their

house team battles in ball hockey.

As always with the Panthers...

Pain is Temporary

But the Panther Pride is forever!

601 Circuits The fun is 601 has been going by like a light! 601 has been studying electricity! We've been making electric circuits, and the results were shocking! We were connecting wires from batteries to light bulbs, creating parallel or series circuits! And in the end 601 created light. It definitely turns us on! By Hannah and Emma Science: Electricity Lately my class (601), has been working on electricity in science class and we have worked with our fellow classmates and have used light bulbs, wires, batteries and switches. We have learned to create electricity (light) with up to 3 light bulbs and 6 wires. We have also learned about circuits and atom’s. That was some of the things my class has learned about electricity so far in our school year! By Kaitlyn iMovie iMovie is a great program for creating clips and videos for school work and just plain having fun. In our class 601 we have been using iMovie to create P.S.As. They were great and easy to make we had lots of fun. iMovie is a great way to show people what you can make. By Daniel and D’Andr iMovie in 601 601 is filled with lots of inspiration and our teacher decided to make public service announcements on iMovie for health and drama. First, we started out with an assignment to get to know the app more and to do that we came up with the idea to make a short film (no more than 3 minutes) about Beatty Fleming or 601. After, we finished the Beatty Fleming or 601 movies and got to know more about the app, we started our public service announcements. The public service announcements were very impressive. Everyone worked hard and most were pretty amazing, we were surprised especially because we're juniors. In the end our teachers and classmates loved the app iMovie and the way we used it, we hope you, teachers and students will read this and get the app from our amazing experiences. By Harman + Christina iMovie iMovie is a very useful app for iPod, phone and pad I know this because my class 601 has been experimenting the app I movie. Mrs. Armstrong gives us the privilege to use the iPads anywhere in the school for filming. Mrs. Armstrong also gave us a assignment to make a p.s.a that was used to tell kids to help stop bullying. Iit was really fun we used imovie to edit our videos the tools we could use are colours ,shapes, audio ,music and speed limit. We could also split the video it was a very good app and it only cost a few dollars. Powtoons In 601 we use the website powtoons. Powtoons is used to make slides and is a very good way to show presentations and make AMAZING and AWESOME videos just for fun. We made two projects, those projects were all about us and the other project was a flight project to learn about planes and flying animals’ flight. It is simple and easy to use and you can send it to your classmates and others who have powtoons. You can also show your family and friends. We really enjoyed powtoons you guys should really try it out. Powtoons Website: http://www.powtoon.com/ By De’Shaun, Alex and Mankaran BOOK CREATOR Book creator is an amazing app that lets kids bring out their inner writer. With book creator kids can write their own books. 601 has been learning and making books about themselves, the class 601 and many more. With book creator kids can add their voices, videos and pictures from the internet. With book creator kids can change the colour of the page and change the font. With book creator kids can have fun making books and learn new things. By Cavla iMovie 601 has been experimenting with a bunch of different apps. The one we are going to talk about is iMovie. iMovie is an editing software that allows users to make their videos more interesting. For example, you can add background music so the video isn’t as boring. 601 were able to pick a few other students to work with and create a video, using iMovie, regarding the school to present to the class. 601 also used iMovie to create Public Service Announcements regarding alcohol or drugs. This was a great experience for the 601 students.. Jestina & Chelsea
