Principal & Vice Principal’s Message

It is unbelievable that we are beginning the last month of the

2015-2016 school year! This school year has gone by very

quickly, and the last few weeks will be filled with learning, fun

and excitement! It has been heartening for Mr. Sabourin, Mr.

Moscone and myself to have watched and been a part of the

academic, social, physical and emotional growth that your child

has experienced over the school year. Your support and

assistance in your son/daughter’s education is greatly appreciated

by us and all of the staff at Beatty-Fleming Sr. P.S.

On behalf of all Beatty Fleming staff, we would like to thank:

the parents who have represented all the parents of the

school community by serving on the School Council

the volunteers who contribute their time to support our

lunch program, breakfast program and other endeavours

the students of Beatty-Fleming for working to the best of

their ability throughout the school year; we are confident

that they will continue to build upon the knowledge and

skills they have acquired this year

We would also like to thank all of the staff who have worked

tirelessly through out the year to meet the needs of the students

entrusted in their care. Their commitment, dedication and

enthusiasm to program for students makes a positive difference

each and every day. Staff efforts to run all of the extracurricular

clubs, sports and activities is greatly appreciated.

Though we are nearing the end of the school year there is still lots

of learning to do, lots of activities, trips, events … and this list

goes on. We will continue to work in partnership with you, and

will provide your son/daughter the best possible education up to,

and including, June 30th, the last day of school for 2015/16.

Summer activities that boost learning Grades 5 to 8

Follow the news – As a family, choose an important news event to follow

for a day or two. Ask each person to find as much information on the

topic as possible – read newspapers, look at online news webpages, listen

to the radio and watch TV news. Then talk about what everyone learned.

Pro and con: what do you think? – Make a family game of discussing a

special issue. For example, "Teenagers should be allowed to vote," or

"There should never be any homework." Ask your children to think of all

the reasons they can to support their views. Then ask them to think of

reasons opposing their views. Which views are most convincing? For

variety, assign family members to teams and have them prepare their

arguments pro and con.

Stretch, run, walk – Ask your child to do at least one kind of exercise

every day. For example, run or walk briskly for 10 minutes. Walk, when

possible, instead of driving, for any distance less than a mile. Have your

child make a week-long exercise plan. Try to think of a modest reward

for sticking to the plan and exercise with your child.

Let your voice be heard – Promote good citizenship. Help your child write

a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about an issue affecting

children – for example, suggest that a bike path be built near the school

or that a city event be planned for youngsters. Children are citizens, and

their ideas are worth hearing.

IMPORTANT CHANGE COMING SEPTEMBER 2016

Report student absences through new SafeArrival system

Beginning Sept. 6, 2016, all parents/guardians need to report their children’s

full-day absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from school via our

new automated SafeArrival phone number at 1-855-209-6155, online at

pdsb.schoolconnects.com, or by downloading the mobile app for Apple

and Android devices. For absences longer than 5 consecutive school days,

please contact the school office.

Parents are encouraged to provide an email address to schools. Parents who

have an email address on file at school will receive an email invitation from

Synervoice Technologies during the week of August 29th. The invitation will

include login information. Starting the week of August 29th, parents who

do not have an email address on file at the school can visit

pdsb.schoolconnects.com and choose CREATE LOGIN to create your

account and receive login credentials that can be used online or with the

mobile app. Parents need to have a cell phone that is capable of receiving text

messages to complete the setup process. The cell phone number must be on

file with the school. All three options are available 24 hours a day.

There is no longer an absence reporting

phone line at school. If you have any

questions or require any assistance, contact

the school directly.

as of June 2nd 2016. We will resume at the start of the next school

And we’re into the homestretch. June may bring the final month of the Panthers’ school year, but it doesn’t mean the Panthers are any less busy. In fact, June is a busy month with events, trips and celebrations filling the calendar. In gym classes, students have finished ball hockey, with the Red house finishing in First place, and earning the right to battle the teachers squad, who are seeking redemption for a first ever student victory in a closely contested dodge ball match. The students have moved on to soccer, where they will continue to learn and apply their strategies for territorial/invasion games. And softball, which will be their first striking and fielding game of the year, where they will learn new strategies and skills to apply in similar games like cricket and kickball. In school sports, the boys ball hockey team had a successful tournament where they finished with a bronze medal, not the gold championship they have been accustomed to winning 5 out of the last 6 years, but still a great accomplish. Congratulations boys! June will see each of the Boys and Girls soccer teams compete, as well as the girls’ and boys’ softball teams, each of which have a tremendous history of championship success. The girls softball team, who have won 2 ‘gold’s and 2 ‘silver’s in the past four years, look to bring that championship back home where it belongs, when they play at Duggan Park on June 9th, and the boys will look to defend their streak of 4 consecutive championships on June 10th at Duggan Park. The girls’ soccer team will play June 14th, at the Creditview and Sandalwood Fields, followed by the boys’ team, who will look to defend their division championship the following day, June 15th. Good luck to all the Panthers teams, as they prepare for and head into the final tournaments of the year. And lastly, but certainly not least, the most exciting trip of the year is almost upon us, as 83 Panthers prepare to head out into the wilderness for a week long camping excursion on Beatty-Fleming’s annual Cedar Ridge camping trip. 40 hours to graduate Since 1999, all students in Ontario secondary schools are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement in order to receive a diploma. The purpose of this requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in their community. Students are now able to start accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter grade 9. Research shows that early involvement in community service helps students build a spirit of civic responsibility which can be expanded as they move through secondary school. The aim of the 40-hour requirement is to encourage students to become actively involved in making positive contributions to their community. The community involvement component is an opportunity for students and parents to work together, independent of the school. With parent support, your teen is responsible for finding and completing 40 hours of community service. Parents should provide assistance to their teen in the selection of community involvement activities.
