Furlough Soon!!

In a short time we will be starting our firstfurlough. During thirteen very short months,we hope to see as many of you as possible, visitour relatives, finish my M.A. in linguistics andtake an intensive Hebrew course, put the boysthrough the 4th and 6th grades, speak topotential translators and support workers, andperhaps even take a short vacation. We alsoplan to represent PBT at the North AmericanChristian Convention in St. Louis, MO. (July26-29) and the National Missionary Conventionin Des Moines, Iowa (Sept. 27-30). Alta and Iwill also participate in the Pioneer LinguisticsInstitute (PLI - an introduction to linguistics andBible translation offered by PBT) to be held onthe Cincinnati Bible Seminary campus May 22-27,1983. We will arrive in Jackson, MS the 29thof April and we plan to return to PNG the lastweek of May, 1984. Our "base of operation" forthe most of the year will be Dallas, TX where wewill all go to school. We are writing aboutpossible dates to visit your church but if youwould tike us to come and have not heard from

us yet, drop a tetter to the Tanksleys.

Van Need

Since we will be traveling a lot during ourfurlough, we need a reliable means oftransportation which enables us to arriverelatively alert and comfortable. To meet thisneed, we would like to borrow, lease, or buy alate-model, low-mileage van. If you could helpwith this need or know someone who would, call or write the Tanksleys (our forwardingagents' phone - (601) 924-0299, address listedon front of newsletter) soon. ,

PBT Computer Project

God has answered our prayers for thecomputer project in a most encouragingmanner: the PBT computer has beenpurchased, sent to PNG, set up in Madang, paid

for completely, and has already begun itsservice to our PBT people in Papua NewGuinea. Your generous response to this needhas enabled us to purchase computing poweradequate for our needs for many years. Theonly extra expense will be for maintenance(service agreement, supplies, etc.) and growth(new programs, additional consoles/workstations, etc.). Of course, it is not a "perfectperpetual-motion machine" so it wilt eventuallyneed to be replaced but not for a long time. Wepraise the Lord and we thank you for yourparticipation in our Bible translation ministry.

Mr

November 1983

Dear Christian Friend,

We hope this finds you happy and well and rejoicing in the knowledge that God sent His Son to be ourSaviour. We're already enjoying our first Christmas back in the States even though it is still several weeksaway. It's exciting to see all the preparations and to be a part of the churches' planning for Christmasprograms and specials. We really missed all that while we were in Papua New Guinea.

We just want to take this time to let you know how much we appreciate you and that you mean a greatdeal to us. We want to thank you for remembering us on special days (and not-so-special days, as well)while we were in PNG and for all the times you remembered to pray for us. We felt your prayers and love.We want to wish you now a very blessed Christmas season and a time of spiritual fulfillment. We want tojoin you in praising God for His great gift of a Saviour and remember, with you. Jesus' love for us inbeing willing to come. Isn't He wonderful?

We have had a very busy Summer and Fall so far but are enjoying it. We have been able to visit many ofour supporting churches in Michigan, Indiana and Mississippi. We really enjoyed attending the NationalMissionary Convention and the North American Christian Convention. We were privileged to bepresent at the homecoming celebration of the New Testament Christian Church in Meridian, Mississippiwhich we helped start back in 1970. We are still looking forward to visiting many of you next Spring andSummer. Wes' school schedule this fall is very demanding and we aren't able to get away as often as wewould like nor go as far as we need to go to visit with you all.

The boys are doing great in school and love their teachers, friends and their school. Adam told meshortly after school began, "Mom, my teacher is the'next to the best'teacher I have ever had". Iasked hima little hesitantly, "Well, who was your favorite then?" 1melted when he said, "Why, you, of course, Mom".I think he was being a little flattering, but it made me feel good. They both have orthodontic appliancesnow and we are praising God for a very kind and generous dentist. Jonathan also is wearing glassesnow. He takes piano and choir at school and is doing very well. They are growing faSt.

We are remembering our friends in Souh village on Manus Island and are getting anxious to see themagain. We enjoyed observing Christmas with them last year and trust that, in someway, God will be veryreal and close to them this Christmas season also while we are away. Please continue to remember themin your prayers.

This Christmas letter and greeting will take the place of our regular newsletter for this period. Again wewish you all a very blessed Christmas and joy in serving Jesus as the new year approaches. God blessyou.
