FAA Safety Team | Safer Skies Through Education

FAA Safety Briefing Departments Notice Number: NOTC4913

The July/August issue of FAA Safety Briefing, available at http://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/ focuses on airman preparedness. Articles explore procedures, techniques, and equipment that can help you stay ahead of the aviation safety curve and prepare for the unexpected.

In the issue’s Jumpseat department (p.1), Flight Standards Service Director John Allen discusses the importance of preparing for the unknown in our aviation endeavors, and learning how others have coped with unusual circumstances during a flight. Staying on the topic of preparedness, Aeromedical Advisory (p. 7) offers twelve important survival tips to consider after a flying mishap, while the issue’s Vertically Speaking department (p. 30) outlines some preventive measures you can take to reduce the risk of birdtsrikes.

Finally, this issue’s FAA Faces department profiles Aviation Safety Inspector Kenneth C. Thomas from FAA’s Alaska Region. Alaska’s great diversity in flying has heightened Thomas’ appreciation for the importance of preparedness. In Ken’s view, preparedness for safe operation as a pilot or mechanic includes training, knowledge, and awareness of personal abilities and limitations. “Take every operation, and especially every landing, seriously. It also pays to get regular instruction for proficiency, and definitely get specialized instruction if you plan to fly in remote areas.” For more of Thomas’ advice on how to stay prepared, see page 33.
