Cloud Move - Risks and Impacts related to Interfaces„We don‘t know, what we don‘t know“

SNP TW 2017 Workshop "Move to the cloud! Do you know your interfaces?" © SNP

• According to PAC (2014), in

average 9 modules are in

use in SAP installations,

that are run on 23 SAP

instances with 3.400 users

across 11 regions with 36

locations.

• Additionally there are a lot

of non-SAP systems and

external systems, that

exchange data with the SAP

landscape regularly.SAP ERP

Cloud Move Issues - Two Examples out of many others

Example 1: SAP HANA platform migration

After go-live, some unknown interfaces failed

Corrective measures took several weeks

Business impacts unknown

SNP IFS was introduced later and reported those interfaces already after initial data collection

Example 2: Cloud move of several SAP Systems of complex system landscape

After go-live, a major business disruption occurred

Thousands of workers could not enter time sheets anymore

Salaries could not be paid

Corrective measures took several months

Business impacts unknown

SNP IFS could have prevented this situation

InterfacesWhat Don’t You Know?

The ChallengesINTERFACES

▪ Documentation of interfaces incomplete or out of date

▪ Knowledge about essential interfaces not centrally accessible

▪ No adequate graphical representation of topology available; high-effort manual creation, incomplete data

▪ All interfaces must be known in order to configure monitoring tools

SECURITY & COMPLIANCE

OPERATIONS

TRANSFORMATION PROJECTS

▪ Test team needs complete and accurate view of all interfaces impacted by change

▪ What is the most appropriate technical approach/strategy

▪ Which systems impacted and thus which system owners should be engaged

▪ Supplier requested a view of interface topology to prepare and plan

▪ Risk assessments might overlook unrecorded interfaces

▪ Is the organisation at risk from internal and external threats – e.g. connection loopholes

▪ Is the organisation currently exposed to indirect SAP license compliance costs

▪ Can we meet internal and external audit requirements with current interface knowledge (e.g. GDPR, KPMG..)

Page 10: BE SMARTER TAKE IT TO A NEW LEVEL - … SMARTER –TAKE IT TO A NEW LEVEL. ... Near zero downtime at cutover SNP ... Cloud move of several SAP Systems of complex system landscape

10

Interface Analysis Enables Fact-Based Decisions

▪ Accelerate testing and reduce risk with instant before and after snap-shot of interface landscape

▪ Empower the project team to make informed decisions on transformation strategy (phased vs. big bang change)

▪ Ensure isolation of sandbox systems used to support the project

▪ Provide suppliers with real-time view of your landscape

TRANSFORMATION PROJECTS

The BenefitsINTERFACES

▪ Find unused and insecure interface connections, e.g. connections left over from previous projects

▪ Detect unknown (remote) systems connecting into the SAP Production systems

▪ Use interface data to assess license audit/compliance exposure

▪ Graphical representation of topologies providing unmatched transparency

SECURITY & COMPLIANCE

OPERATIONS▪ Immediate visualisation of entire landscape topology

▪ Reduce business disruption with continuous monitoring of interface connectivity

▪ Identify changes within the interface landscape between different periods

▪ Detect yet unknown systems and connections

Example 1: In-/Outbound connections of an SAP ERP System

SNP TW 2017 Workshop "Move to the cloud! Do you know your interfaces?" © SNP

• All inbound and outbound

connections within a given

timeframe are visualized

• SAP and non-SAP

sender/reveiver systems

involved

• Systems are grouped

according their classification

• Clustering reduces

complexity for keeping better

overview

• This result can be achieved

required by analyzing only a

single SAP System
