INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Insignia GSi,An inspiring car in an inspiring region – the Provence. The new Opel Insignia GSi is a
sports limousine for all those who really appreciate that something special: sharper,
more precise, even more eficient. In a nutshell, a driving machine par excellence for maximum fun on all roads. The dynamic setup of the chassis creates an extremely high
level of grip. The all-wheel drive with torque vectoring is unique in this segment.
You will experience all the technical highlights during our drive from Marseilles to
Les Baux-de-Provence. En route, you will also be able to complete a few fast laps
on a closed track at the Michelin Test Center in Fontange.
You will also experience a somewhat different Provence. The automotive industry
gathers here during the winter months in order to take advantage of mild temperature
and test, test and test again on the various test tracks located in the region. But don’t
worry, we will end the day in a typical Provençal manner – with a dinner full of
freshness and phantasy.

Somehow everybody seems to think that they know the
region between the Mediterranean, the Rhone Valley and
Italy at least a bit: Home of lavender and perfume,
bouillabaisse und ratatouille, amphitheatres and aqueducts.
However, the Provence is much more diverse, secretive and
sporty than irst meets the eye. Racing teams, car and
motorcycle makers test here to the extreme all year round!
The density of test tracks is probably even unique: Ledénon,
Le Castellet, Miramas, Grand Sambuc and Le Luc are all in the
direct vicinity of Marseilles. Furthermore, Michelin’s Fontange
Test Centre in Salon de Provence, where we will experience the
Opel Insignia GSi, is also in the area. And the region also hosts
two of the classic events on the international motorsports
calendar – the Rallye Monte Carlo and the Monaco Grand Prix.
It is therefore hardly surprising that famous racing drivers
such as former Formula 1 star Jean Alesi (Avignon), rally world
champion Sébastien Ogier (Gap) and drift queen Michèle
Mouton (Grasse) are true Provençal stars.

PROVENÇAL CELEBS
Who am I ? 1. Born in Saint Remy de
Provence I am an astrologer famous for my prophecies.
2. Actually Dutch but Provençal at heart. I am one of the great painters – but still somehow incomplete.
3. I was inspired by the stories of my childhood in the Provence and I went on to leave my mark on Provençal literature since the 1920s.
4. I am a couturier and French businessman, owner of Le Château de Sade in Lacoste and over 40 houses in the Provence.
CITY PROFILES
Three Superstars
AVIGNONBirthplace of former Ferrari ace Jean Alesi and the “City of Popes”. The supreme pontifs resided here from 1309 to 1423. Its festival of performing arts, a real artistic and cultural showcase of the city, is famous around the world. Avignon was the “European Capital of Culture” in 2000.
AIX-EN-PROVENCE Home of artist Paul Cézanne and historic capital of the Provence. It has hosted an opera and classical music open air festival since 1948. Today, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence is one of the largest music festivals in Europe.
MARSEILLES Birthplace of three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Zinédine Zidane, second largest city in France and leading French port. Because of its location on the Mediterranean Sea it has always been a cosmopolitan city of cultural and economic exchanges. Marseilles was the “European Capital of Culture” in 2013.

Olive oil
The Greeks brought the “tree
of life” to the Provence.
Today olives and their
lavourful oil play an important role in Provençal
cuisine. Based on
fresh local produce,
the high-quality
olive oil and a
sophisticated blend of tasty herbs,
Provençal cuisine is rated as one
of the best in Europe.
Wine
This is where it all started.
Viticulture conquered
France from the Provence.
Around 50 percent of all
wines produced in the region
are the typical tasty rosés, a
further 40 percent are red wines.
Important grape varieties include
Barbaroux, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre,
Cabernet Sauvignon und Cinsault. White
wines play second or even third iddle in this part of France.
Trules
Real trufles, ideally black trufles –
the “black diamonds” of the Provence.
The most famous and mesmerizing
edible mushroom in the world. It is also
the most expensive and fetches between
€100 and €1,000 per kilo on the markets!
CULINARY DELIGHTS

OPEL GSi HISTORY
Sporting Pedigree since 1984
The Insignia GSi continues a long tradition
of sporty Opel models with the GSi
nameplate. The irst two models to create a buzz were the Manta GSi and the Kadett GSi
(115 hp from 1,800 cm3) in 1984. Only four
years later the Kadett 2.0i GSi 16V delivered
150 hp thanks to double overhead camshafts
and four-valve technology. This high-tech
engine also found its way into the Kadett’s
successor, the irst “stra. “lternatively, an “stra GSi with 1, 800 cm3 and 125 hp was offered
from 1993. Multiple Corsa generations also had
GSi variants. The 100 hp Corsa A, now a much
sought-after classic, was the irst in 1988. The Corsa D was the last in the line in 2012 –
at least temporarily!

adjustment, the unique all-wheel drive
along with the performance tyres make the
GSi as precise and sharp as we wanted it to
be,” said Strycek after his test drives.
“The results speak for themselves. I can
complete a lap of the Nordschleife in the
new Insignia GSi up to twelve seconds
faster than in the more powerful OPC
predecessor – but I obviously push the car
every inch of the way. As soon as the
course becomes more demanding, like in
the corners or on stretches with low
friction, i.e. when the car needs to react in
an especially agile and precise manner, the
GSi is deinitely faster and easy to control.” Vehicle control has been his
business for four decades now. Strycek
won the German Touring Car
Championship in a BMW in
1984. Five years later he
was racing an Opel in the
DTM. Strycek, born in
Essen, was a member
of the development
team behind the
Calibra V6, the car that went on to win the
World Touring Car Championship (ITC) in
1996. When Opel switched to Super
Touring with the Vectra, Strycek was in the
pit lane as Opel’s Head of Motorsports.
However, the job didn’t stop him from
getting behind the steering wheel himself.
In 2003, he won the 24-hour race on the
Nürburgring in the DTM Opel Astra V8
with teammates Manuel Reuter, Timo
Scheider and Marcel Tiemann.
When Opel’s involvement in circuit racing
was reorganised, Strycek’s primary focus
shifted to powerful street legal cars. The
Corsa OPC, GTC OPC and Insignia OPC
bear his signature. Now the GSi models
have been added. The Insignia GSi kicked
things off and Strycek is currently ine-tuning the Corsa GSi on the Nordschleife.
Simultaneously, the family man is passing
on his intimate knowledge of the
legendary racetrack to his children Lena
and Robin by teaming up with them
in the VLN long-distance Cup. The trio
celebrated their irst success in the
Cup class in 2016 in their family car –
a self-prepared Opel Astra OPC.

GSi stands for “Great Strycek input”.
Or somewhat more elaborately:
There is a great mind, with a heavy
right foot and an ultra-sensitive “bottom-
meter” behind this abbreviation – the
father of the GSi, Volker Strycek. The Opel
Director Performance Cars and Motorsport
tirelessly thrashed the Insignia GSi around
the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Together
with his team, he ine-tuned, improved and changed every chassis detail before testing
the car again and inally declaring it outstanding. “The lightweight architecture,
the excellent chassis coniguration with uprated damper hydraulics and software

Le Petit Palais d’Aglaé in Gordes
– sounds like something from
an Alexandre Dumas novel –
and is actually a classically beautiful
Provençal hotel with bold lilac
wooden shutters. Here you can enjoy
a fabulous view of Mont de Lubéron, take a
quiet stroll through the herb garden or simply
relax under the old lemon trees and cypresses.
The picturesque village of Gordes also proudly
carries the title of “most beautiful village
in France”. The locals obviously think this also
means the “most beautiful village in the
world”. Because it is needless to say that there
are many, many “most beautiful villages
in France”...
PETIT PALAIS D’AGLAÉ

EN ROUTE
Devilish EncountersVal d’Enfer – the “Valley of Hell” is famous
for its rock formations created by hundreds
of thousands of years of water erosion.
Many compare the landscape to that in
Dante’s “Hell”. People with a lot of phantasy
also recognise devilish creatures in the
formations. In 1959 the Val d’Enfer
provided the perfect scenery for Jean
Cocteau’s ilm the Testament of Orpheus starring Jean Marais.
Feu des Titans – many, many years ago the titans
wanted to conquer the Provence. However,
the locals bravely defended their home. The titans
retreated to a cave of Mont de Vaucluse where
they built a gigantic ire cannon. This gun spat its
fury and lames on the hills of Roussillon turning, the ground red. To this very day, the traces can
still be seen.

This man has many names: The
English refer to him as “Smokin’ Jo”
because of the doughnuts he liked to
perform when celebrating individual wins
and the overall title in the British Touring
Car Championship – and because of the
cigarette that immediately appeared in his
mouth when his helmet was removed. In
German Joachim Winkelhock is simply
known as Jockel – which is the perfect
name for such a lightning fast Swabian.
Somehow the name is reminiscent of
“Jockey” and quite rightly so. In 1988, the
diminutive Jockel took the German and
European Formula 3 Championships at a
canter when he was with the WTS team.
He had a brief exasperating
sniff of Formula 1 air with AGS
the following season before
deciding to go into the touring
car business. Jockel crowned his
time driving touring and super touring cars
for BMW by winning the legendary
24-hours of Le Mans in a BMW V12 LMR
with Pierluigi Martini and Yannick Dalmas
in 1999. The open cockpit prototype was a
completely new experience for the touring
car driver: During qualifying, Winkelhock
was speeding down the long Hunaudières
strait at almost 400 km/h. Before braking
for the Mulsanne Corner, a much slower
vehicle blocked him. When Jockel was
overtaking the car, he wanted to send the
driver a “friendly” salute. However, as soon
as he raised his arm it was caught by the
airstream and jerked backwards, almost
resulting in a dislocated shoulder!
On a more positive note, this did prevent
him from insulting a fellow driver. To cut
a long story short: Le Mans transformed
Jockel Winkelhock into the perfect
gentleman driver.
This was the ideal entry-ticket to Opel.
Jockel drove an Astra V8 Coupé in the
German Touring Car Championship from
2000 to 2003. Winkelhock cruised to a win
on his favourite track, the Norisring in
Nuremberg, in his irst season with the Holzer Team. He has been an Opel
brand ambassador and Opel
driver training instructor since
2004 – and Smokin’ Jo has inally even managed to give up
cigarettes.

Petrol running through the veins and the scent of mesmerizing
perfume in the air – the Provence ombines contrasting worlds in its
own very special way. The Provence is home to the capital of
luxurious scents – Grasse. This is also the setting for the story of a
murder. In German writer Patrick Süskind’s novel “Perfume”
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille becomes the greatest perfumer in the world
before turning into a murderer. Translated into 48 languages and
with global sales topping 20 million it is one of the most successful
German language novels of the 20th century. The 2006 ilm produced by Bernd Eichinger and directed by Tom Tykwer is one of the most
expensive German ilms with a budget of over €50 million.
DOMAINE DE MANVILLE
Where Monks and Nuns are at Home
Domaine de Manville in Les Baux-
de-Provence. In this case a farm has
been transformed into a ive-star
hotel while maintaining its rustic charm.
Architect Mireille Pellen and interior designer
Annie Zeau, both specialists for historic
buildings, achieved this metamorphosis with a
lot of sensitivity and craftsmanship. The
Domaine de Manville even has a Provençal
speciality on its roof. The roof tiling
consisting of convex (monk) and concave
(nun) tiles is known as “monk and nun”.
This style of roof dates back to Roman times
and can be found on old buildings throughout
the area. Actually, France is quite clearly
divided into north and south, with the houses
“south of the border” featuring
the characteristic “monk and nun” tiles.

Neuer Opel Insignia GSi: Design, Entwicklung, Innenraum
MwSt.).
in Rüsselsheim.
Integralsitze beim spezialisierten Zulieferer. Im Falle vom Opel Insignia GSi liegen die
Dinge anders.

All diese
gemeinsam wieder in typisch provenzalischer Art ausklingen lassen –

Provence. Heute sind
Oliven und ihr ge-
schmacksintensives Öl
wesentlicher Be-
standteil der
provenzalischen
Wein
Hier hat alles begonnen: von
der Provence aus eroberte
der Weinbau Frankreich. Zu
etwa 50 Prozent werden die
typischen Roséweine erzeugt, weitere
rund 40 Prozent entfallen auf den
Rotwein. Wichtige Rebsorten sind dabei
Barbaroux, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon und Cinsault.
Weißwein spielt in diesem Teil Frank-
reichs eine untergeordnete Rolle.
Trüfel
Echte Trüffel, am besten Schwarze
Trüffel, sind die schwarzen Diamanten
der Provence. Sie sind die berühmtesten
und betörendsten Speisepilze der Welt.
Noch dazu die teuersten: Je nach
Qualität kostet ein Kilo zwischen 100 und 1.000 Euro.

HISTORIE
Die schnelle GSi-Familie
Der Insignia GSi setzt eine lange Tradition
von Opel-Modellen mit der Bezeichnung
GSi fort. GSi steht für echten Breitensport:
sportlich und zugleich voll alltagstauglich, nicht
alltäglich und schon gar nicht abgehoben.
Erstmals sorgten 1984 der Manta GSi sowie der
Kadett GSi (115 PS aus 1.800 cm3) für Furore.
Bereits vier Jahre später leistete der legendäre
Kadett 2.0i GSi 16V dank zweier obenliegender Nockenwellen und Vierventiltechnik 150 PS.
Dieser Hightech-Motor fand sich auch im Nach-
folgemodell, dem ersten Astra wieder. Auch bei

Entwicklung der Dämpferhydraulik und

berichtet Strycek von den Testfahrten. „Das

Fahrzeugbeherrschung ist seit vier
Jahrzehnten sein Geschäft. 1984
gewann Strycek die Deutsche
Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft
– damals noch auf BMW. Ab
1989 startete er dann für Opel
in der DTM. Der gebürtige Westfale gehörte
zum Entwicklungsteam des Calibra V6, der
1996 die damalige Tourenwagen-WM – die
ITC – gewann. Als Opel mit dem Vectra zu
den Supertourenwagen wechselte, stand
Strycek erstmals als Opel-Motorsportchef
an der Boxenmauer. Der Job hinderte ihn
aber nicht daran, weiterhin selbst ins
Lenkrad zu greifen: 2003 gewann er
gemeinsam mit Manuel Reuter, Timo
Scheider und Marcel Tiemann das 24-Stun-
den-Rennen auf dem Nürburgring mit dem
DTM-Opel Astra V8.
Mit dem Ende von Opels Werksengagement
im Rundstreckensport rückten die Power-
cars für die Straße verstärkt in den
Mittelpunkt von Stryceks Schaffen: Ob
Corsa OPC, GTC OPC oder Insignia OPC
– sie alle tragen die Handschrift des Tech-
nikfreaks. Nun kommen die GSi-Modelle
hinzu.

sauschnellen Schwaben passt. Irgendwie
klingt da auch immer das Wort „Jockey“
durch. Mit Recht.
1988 galoppierte der Jockey im Parforceritt
durch die Formel 3: Deutscher Meister und
Europameister im WTS-Team. In der
Folgesaison schnupperte er bei AGS kurz
einmal Formel-1-Luft, bevor
Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft. Auf seiner
Lieblingsstrecke, dem Nürnberger Noris-
ring, siegte Winkelhock in seiner ersten
Saison im Holzer-Team. Seit 2004
ist er Markenbotschafter für Opel

Fahrertrainings – sogar das
Rauchen hat sich Smoking Jo

Nouvelle Opel Insignia GSi : design, développement, habitacle
GSi Grand Sport à 45.700 € en Belgique ou 44.190 € au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg ;
voulions qu’elle soit, » a déclaré Volker Strycek, Director Performance Cars and

Olive oil
The Greeks brought the “tree
of life” to the Provence.
Today olives and their
lavourful oil play an important role in Provençal
cuisine. Based on
fresh local produce,
the high-quality
olive oil and a
sophisticated blend of tasty herbs,
Provençal cuisine is rated as one
of the best in Europe.
Wine
This is where it all started.
Viticulture conquered
France from the Provence.
Around 50 percent of all
wines produced in the region
are the typical tasty rosés, a
further 40 percent are red wines.
Important grape varieties include
Barbaroux, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre,
Cabernet Sauvignon und Cinsault. White
wines play second or even third iddle in this part of France.
Trules
Real trufles, ideally black trufles –
the “black diamonds” of the Provence.
The most famous and mesmerizing
edible mushroom in the world. It is also
the most expensive and fetches between
€100 and €1,000 per kilo on the markets!

OPEL GSi HISTORY
Sporting Pedigree since 1984
The Insignia GSi continues a long tradition
of sporty Opel models with the GSi
nameplate. The irst two models to create a buzz were the Manta GSi and the Kadett GSi
(115 hp from 1,800 cm3) in 1984. Only four
years later the Kadett 2.0i GSi 16V delivered
150 hp thanks to double overhead camshafts
and four-valve technology. This high-tech
engine also found its way into the Kadett’s
successor, the irst “stra. “lternatively, an “stra GSi with 1, 800 cm3 and 125 hp was offered
from 1993. Multiple Corsa generations also had
GSi variants. The 100 hp Corsa A, now a much
sought-after classic, was the irst in 1988. The Corsa D was the last in the line in 2012 –
at least temporarily!

adjustment, the unique all-wheel drive
along with the performance tyres make the
GSi as precise and sharp as we wanted it to
be,” said Strycek after his test drives.
“The results speak for themselves. I can
complete a lap of the Nordschleife in the
new Insignia GSi up to twelve seconds
faster than in the more powerful OPC
predecessor – but I obviously push the car
every inch of the way. As soon as the
course becomes more demanding, like in
the corners or on stretches with low
friction, i.e. when the car needs to react in
an especially agile and precise manner, the
GSi is deinitely faster and easy to control.” Vehicle control has been his
business for four decades now. Strycek
won the German Touring Car
Championship in a BMW in
1984. Five years later he
was racing an Opel in the
DTM. Strycek, born in
Essen, was a member
of the development
team behind the
Calibra V6, the car that went on to win the
World Touring Car Championship (ITC) in
1996. When Opel switched to Super
Touring with the Vectra, Strycek was in the
pit lane as Opel’s Head of Motorsports.
However, the job didn’t stop him from
getting behind the steering wheel himself.
In 2003, he won the 24-hour race on the
Nürburgring in the DTM Opel Astra V8
with teammates Manuel Reuter, Timo
Scheider and Marcel Tiemann.
When Opel’s involvement in circuit racing
was reorganised, Strycek’s primary focus
shifted to powerful street legal cars. The
Corsa OPC, GTC OPC and Insignia OPC
bear his signature. Now the GSi models
have been added. The Insignia GSi kicked
things off and Strycek is currently ine-tuning the Corsa GSi on the Nordschleife.
Simultaneously, the family man is passing
on his intimate knowledge of the
legendary racetrack to his children Lena
and Robin by teaming up with them
in the VLN long-distance Cup. The trio
celebrated their irst success in the
Cup class in 2016 in their family car –
a self-prepared Opel Astra OPC.

GSi stands for “Great Strycek input”.
Or somewhat more elaborately:
There is a great mind, with a heavy
right foot and an ultra-sensitive “bottom-
meter” behind this abbreviation – the
father of the GSi, Volker Strycek. The Opel
Director Performance Cars and Motorsport
tirelessly thrashed the Insignia GSi around
the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Together
with his team, he ine-tuned, improved and changed every chassis detail before testing
the car again and inally declaring it outstanding. “The lightweight architecture,
the excellent chassis coniguration with uprated damper hydraulics and software

Le Petit Palais d’Aglaé in Gordes
– sounds like something from
an Alexandre Dumas novel –
and is actually a classically beautiful
Provençal hotel with bold lilac
wooden shutters. Here you can enjoy
a fabulous view of Mont de Lubéron, take a
quiet stroll through the herb garden or simply
relax under the old lemon trees and cypresses.
The picturesque village of Gordes also proudly
carries the title of “most beautiful village
in France”. The locals obviously think this also
means the “most beautiful village in the
world”. Because it is needless to say that there
are many, many “most beautiful villages
in France”...

Devilish EncountersVal d’Enfer – the “Valley of Hell” is famous
for its rock formations created by hundreds
of thousands of years of water erosion.
Many compare the landscape to that in
Dante’s “Hell”. People with a lot of phantasy
also recognise devilish creatures in the
formations. In 1959 the Val d’Enfer
provided the perfect scenery for Jean
Cocteau’s ilm the Testament of Orpheus starring Jean Marais.
Feu des Titans – many, many years ago the titans
wanted to conquer the Provence. However,
the locals bravely defended their home. The titans
retreated to a cave of Mont de Vaucluse where
they built a gigantic ire cannon. This gun spat its
fury and lames on the hills of Roussillon turning, the ground red. To this very day, the traces can
still be seen.

This man has many names: The
English refer to him as “Smokin’ Jo”
because of the doughnuts he liked to
perform when celebrating individual wins
and the overall title in the British Touring
Car Championship – and because of the
cigarette that immediately appeared in his
mouth when his helmet was removed. In
German Joachim Winkelhock is simply
known as Jockel – which is the perfect
name for such a lightning fast Swabian.
Somehow the name is reminiscent of
“Jockey” and quite rightly so. In 1988, the
diminutive Jockel took the German and
European Formula 3 Championships at a
canter when he was with the WTS team.
He had a brief exasperating
sniff of Formula 1 air with AGS
the following season before
deciding to go into the touring
car business. Jockel crowned his
time driving touring and super touring cars
for BMW by winning the legendary
24-hours of Le Mans in a BMW V12 LMR
with Pierluigi Martini and Yannick Dalmas
in 1999. The open cockpit prototype was a
completely new experience for the touring
car driver: During qualifying, Winkelhock
was speeding down the long Hunaudières
strait at almost 400 km/h. Before braking
for the Mulsanne Corner, a much slower
vehicle blocked him. When Jockel was
overtaking the car, he wanted to send the
driver a “friendly” salute. However, as soon
as he raised his arm it was caught by the
airstream and jerked backwards, almost
resulting in a dislocated shoulder!
On a more positive note, this did prevent
him from insulting a fellow driver. To cut
a long story short: Le Mans transformed
Jockel Winkelhock into the perfect
gentleman driver.
This was the ideal entry-ticket to Opel.
Jockel drove an Astra V8 Coupé in the
German Touring Car Championship from
2000 to 2003. Winkelhock cruised to a win
on his favourite track, the Norisring in
Nuremberg, in his irst season with the Holzer Team. He has been an Opel
brand ambassador and Opel
driver training instructor since
2004 – and Smokin’ Jo has inally even managed to give up
cigarettes.

Petrol running through the veins and the scent of mesmerizing
perfume in the air – the Provence ombines contrasting worlds in its
own very special way. The Provence is home to the capital of
luxurious scents – Grasse. This is also the setting for the story of a
murder. In German writer Patrick Süskind’s novel “Perfume”
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille becomes the greatest perfumer in the world
before turning into a murderer. Translated into 48 languages and
with global sales topping 20 million it is one of the most successful
German language novels of the 20th century. The 2006 ilm produced by Bernd Eichinger and directed by Tom Tykwer is one of the most
expensive German ilms with a budget of over €50 million.
DOMAINE DE MANVILLE
Where Monks and Nuns are at Home
Domaine de Manville in Les Baux-
de-Provence. In this case a farm has
been transformed into a ive-star
hotel while maintaining its rustic charm.
Architect Mireille Pellen and interior designer
Annie Zeau, both specialists for historic
buildings, achieved this metamorphosis with a
lot of sensitivity and craftsmanship. The
Domaine de Manville even has a Provençal
speciality on its roof. The roof tiling
consisting of convex (monk) and concave
(nun) tiles is known as “monk and nun”.
This style of roof dates back to Roman times
and can be found on old buildings throughout
the area. Actually, France is quite clearly
divided into north and south, with the houses
“south of the border” featuring
the characteristic “monk and nun” tiles.
