1. Fairness, respect and dignityMake sure that older people are

treated with care and respect, and

given the chance to participate in

decisions aff ecting their lives.

Tip: Help older people to be comfortable; move them to the front of a queue or give them somewhere to sit.

4. Community ProgrammesRaise awareness about the needs and rights of older people in our communi es. Care of older people should be part of everyday life.

Tip: Community Policing Forums (CPFs) can focus on the wellbeing of older people in their community.

The Vic m Empowerment Policy encourages the spirit of ubuntu. Ensure that older people are included in community ac vi es.

2. Basic rightsElderly people have rights to safety, decent living condi ons and services such as transport, health care, security and social welfare.

3. SafetyOlder people have a right to protec on from all forms of abuse. By law, any suspected abuse of older people must be reported to the Department of Social Development, who must follow up on the report within 48 hours.

Note: The Protec on of Older Persons Act priori ses the safety of older people. Protec on Orders can be sought if they are being harassed by community or family members.

Being socially connected with others in the community keeps older people safer. Help older people stay in touch with family and friends through luncheon clubs, religious groups or other ac vi es.
