From a design perspective, much of the underlying theory is taken from Leon Krier’s book, The Architectural Tuning of Settlements. He explains that urbanism and architectural form can be calibrated along a Classical to Vernacular (C-V) scale, classical being more formal and orderly, and vernacular being more loose or domestic. Both the urban form and the architectural form can move along this spectrum independently, but at some point, they must be looked at together. This relationship between classical and vernacular gives a place authenticity.

The tuning of urbanism defines how the campus relates to its immediate context – is it an icon, a set piece within the neighborhood, or is it a continuation of the surrounding urban fabric with a few set spaces carved out to create a civic presence. To make a decision on the appropriate tuning of a campus, the transect of the surround area must be understood. Schools do not have to mimic this transect, but must relate to it in some deliberate way.

TThe design precedent research begins with a study of different campuses and how they are composed. They range from the most vernacular (Wellesley College) to the most classical (University of Virginia) in how the buildings relate to the transects of the surrounding context and also to each other. From this, we are able to see different patterns that occur along the C-V scale. We use these patterns as a guide to approach the design of the school.

Tuning of elements along the Classical to Vernacular scale can be applied to architecture, in both building form and architectural character. The transects of the existing fabric and development patterns of the surrounding area, as well as the relationship be-tween the public and private realm, will direct the tuning of these elements. With regard to form, this tuning guides the propor-tioning systems and volumes of a building. The tuning of architectural character defines the specific elements and details that are used in the building design.

The second part of the precedent research is the study of different building forms and typologies. These are the specific building types that create campuses and define the public and private realms. These typologies are organized in three categories: Civic/Foreground, Transition, and Background. Within one campus, a variety of typologies may be used to create hierarchy of spaces.FForeground buildings are generally characterized by with grand architectural gestures, such as a tower, or the use of a monumental order. They are the focal point of public spaces. Fabric buildings, on the contrary, are used to shape spaces and frame the foreground buildings. They are modest in their massing and architectural detailing. Transition buildings, such as arcades and loggias, link these two together.

The compositions of these buildings results in the formation of a campus. The interaction between all three typologies is integral to the character of the place.
