Tauranga’s Phil Campbell has taken his fi rst victory in the Group N

two-wheel drive class after a near perfect performance at round two

of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, powered by Brother, the Trusthouse

Racetech Rally Wairarapa.

Campbell made a good start to the event with a class win of more than 30 seconds, however a puncture on the second stage meant that lead was reduced to half a second.

Recovering after service, Campbell and co-driver Venita Fabbro won each of the remaining six special stages rounding out the opening day, including three bonus points for the fi nal stage of the day which was the event power stage. By day’s end, the lead had grown to 57.2 seconds.

Day two saw Campbell again setting the

pace as he won the opening two stages and then recorded a second place to open up a lead for the day of 4.5 seconds. The remain-der of the day saw the 25-year old swapping stage times with the identical Ford Fiesta of Josh Marston, but Campbell held on to win day two by 12.3 seconds and with it the outright round.

The result gives Campbell his fi rst win in the three years he has contested the NZRC in the Letts Buildings Ford Fiesta, while he also climbed up to an impressive ninth place overall.

“I’m really stoked, we had a great run with only a couple of minor issues,” says Camp-bell.

“Hopefully we can continue it and have a good battle with Josh and Ben Hunt at Otago.”

After a tough opening round, Campbell has now moved into the equal lead of the Group N two-wheel drive class with three rounds remaining.

Mazda hits right note with diesel CX-5

Mazda, once again, set the scene for the sporty SUV market with the launch of the CX-7 some years ago. It was a radical departure from the conventional SUV profi le with its raked back and sporty aesthetics, wrapped around a super punchy

(turbo charged no less) engine that put it in a class of its own

for performance. Soon the CX-7 will depart the market,

to be eclipsed by Mazda’s latest offering, the CX-5. It comes with only a marginally smaller interior than the CX-7, and delivers a wider range of 2WD and All Wheel Drive options to suit most tastes. Look hard at the CX-5 and you may well see something of the BMW X1 in its profi le. However the Mazda promises to offer its higher priced European counterparts a few surprises in terms of stan-dard features, performance and drivability.

The CX-5 also marks Mazda’s entry, at least in New Zealand, into the diesel passenger vehicle segment, with the CX-5 featuring a 2.2 litre turbocharged diesel in two AWD models of the range.

The other models come with the 2.0 litre petrol engine, and all have Mazda’s much touted SkyActiv technology that aims to make the machines ultra frugal at the pump.

The test car for Bay Driver was at the top of the tree for specifi cations and features, the CX-5 LTD auto diesel. Finished with leather seats there is probably nothing even the most demanding customer would be left wanting in the LTD. Even the base GLX models fea-ture Bluetooth, a 5.8” touch screen, reversing camera and SkyActiv with i-stop and an engine shutdown system to save fuel at the lights or in paused traffi c.

Once you get up to the top spec’ LTD the extras include powered driver’s seat, heated front seats, a sunroof, 19” wheels, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warn-ing, features often only found on high-end European vehicles. It all adds up to a very comprehensively packaged interior. It is all laid out in Mazda’s typical clear, common sense fashion that does not leave you scram-bling through the manual to try and work out which button needs pushing for what.

The touchscreen, for example, neatly incorporates phone, navigation, media and reversing camera, and makes getting the most out of the kicking big 230watt Bose stereo system simple.

Blissfully quietOn the road the diesel engine is bliss-

fully quiet, delivering unimpeded smooth power well up the rev range, and a pleasing surprise at the pump, sipping only a claimed 5.7L/100km. With its six speed SkyActiv transmission, the engine delivery is mini-mally interrupted by shifts under acceleration

and the six speeds offer

the breadth of ratios to make the CX-5 well suited as a long distance cruiser.

The SkyActiv technology that Mazda is putting so much emphasis on is as unobtru-sive as it is effective. It includes not only the six speed transmission’s ratios and i-stop, but also a full redesign of chassis, aerodynamics and vehicle weight.

The i-stop function works a treat, you will never notice it is there with the engine re-starting as soon as your foot is lifted off the brake at the lights.

On rural roads Mazda’s characteristic focus on handling and direct response is there in the DNA of the CX-5 as well. Minimal body roll provides a far sportier, engaging driving experience than you would expect from most SUVs, and sudden pot holes and rough spots get distributed well through the chassis with little fuss to handling.

Rear leg room is generous, and the CX-5 delivers even more boot room than its de-

parting big brother the CX-7, albeit only by 3 litres. It is a generous, expansive space and even manages to accommodate a (rare these days) full-sized spare wheel.

Moving aheadMore and more vehicle manufacturers are

making the smaller SUV a separate and val-ued part of their stable today, as buyers move down in size, technology delivers increased cabin space on a smaller foot print, and fuel economy again becomes part of a buyers criteria.

Mazda has proven once again it can move ahead of the market by offering such an extensive choice within the CX-5 range that will fi t most budgets and aspirations.

Regardless of which one you choose howev-er, you can be certain all share the company’s passion for good design married to excellence in engineering reality.mally interrupted by shifts under acceleration

SkyActiv technology achieves standard setting economy and effi ciency in the CX5

The CX5’s LTD’s interior is of a standard that would rival many European SUVs at twice the price of the CX5.

BMW is back in the DTM and was immediately in the thick of things in a turbulent opening race of the 2012

season at the Hockenheimring.

Andy Priaulx of BMW Team RBM was the only one of the six BMW drivers to complete the 40 laps without any notable incidents.

Under the watchful eyes of members of the board of management of BMW, Priaulx crossed the line in sixth place in his Crowne Plaza Hotels BMW M3 DTM to score eight points. The three-time World Touring Car Champion fi nished 28.4 seconds behind Gary Paffett, who won the race for Mercedes.

Starting the race from third place on the grid, Dirk Werner was hit by Mercedes driver Ralf Schumacher very early in the race, and dropped to the back of the fi eld. Bruno Spen-gler, who was directly behind Schumacher at the time, could do nothing to avoid colliding with the former Formula One driver, and subsequently had to retire from the race.

In all the turmoil, reigning DTM cham-pion Martin Tomczyk was forced off the

track and suffered damage to his BMW M Performance Parts M3 DTM. As a result, Tomczyk’s fi rst race of the new DTM era also came to a premature end just a few laps into the action. Joey Hand was hit by another competitor and spun in the hairpin, losing time and dropping positions. He eventu-ally crossed the line in 13th. Augusto Farfus fi nished 15th, while Werner brought his car home in 17th.

Over the course of the race weekend, 142,000 fans watched the fi rst meeting of the three German premium automobile manufac-turers in the DTM. In Saturday’s qualifying, four of the six BMW drivers made it into the top ten.

BMW Motorsport director Jens Marquardt was very happy with the comeback of the DTM.

“Nobody really knew what the balance of power would be at the start of the new DTM era. The unexpectedly strong performance in qualifying on Sunday, and the good sixth place achieved by an in-form Andy in Sun-day’s race are just reward for the hard work put in by our entire team.”

A record low number of road deaths occurred in New Zealand in April,

according to provisional fi gures released by the Government.

Twelve people died on New Zealand roads last month - the fewest for any calendar month for any year since 1965, when monthly records started.

The previous lowest monthly fi gure came just two months ago, when 16 road deaths were recorded in February.

But Associate Transport Minister Simon Bridges says while the record low is an encouraging result, there is still a need to improve road safety.

“Too many people are being killed and injured on our roads and it will be little comfort to their families and loved ones.”

The minister counted road safety as one of his transport priorities.

“We will work hard to progress actions from our Safer Journeys strategy for reduc-ing the rate of death and injury on New Zealand’s roads.”

The record low April toll comes after New

Zealand recorded its lowest annual road toll in 50 years in 2011 and follows this year’s fi rst ever fatality-free Easter holiday period.

Simon says factors that could have led to the reductions include legislation, safety improvements, road policing and economic factors such as fuel prices.

Analysis is being carried out to fi nd whether contributing factors to the 2011 toll can be better identifi ed.

The Government’s Safer Journeys Action Plan is aimed at safer roads, safer speeds, safer vehicles and safer road use.

“Already we have strengthened driver licence tests, and work is underway to sup-port the introduction of alcohol interlocks and a zero alcohol licence for repeat drink drivers.

“It’s too early to say what this means for the longer term, but I urge all New Zealanders to do what they can to improve road safety and keep the road toll low.

“There are steps we can all take, like using common sense and caution on the roads, driving to the conditions and mak-ing safety a priority when purchasing a vehicle.” By Corrie Taylor

Hank Verryt’s towering frame and chunky arms do not fit with the

description mini man.But hear him enthusing about the classic car

model and the name seems to fit.“They say a rich man can turn up in a Mini,

or a rock star or a poor man – and they will always make an impression. It’s always a

‘wow’ experience.”The stalwart of the Tauranga car industry,

who opened his car-yard 37 years ago, took the Bay Driver down memory lane this week when he shared his love for the classic Mini. His recollections were prompted after son Chris, who now runs the 15th Ave car-yard, got a 2006 Mini Cooper S on the yard to sell.

For the occasion Hank has pulled out his restored 1965 Austin Mini Cooper S, which

had been driven by legendary Tauranga mini racer Keith Madgwick – who was a leading figure in local motorsport

and the Tauranga Car Club.“We had lots of good Mini racing here at Baypark. Keith raced it a lot here in the local club events.”

Hank himself was a keen go-kart racer and while he never competed in Min-

is he was keen to help preserve local motorsport history.

“The car was up for sale and it looked like nobody was going to buy it so I decided to.”

Together with friends in the auto trades he set about restoring it to its former glory, after he bought it 15 years ago.

“There were a

group of us – painters and panelbeaters and upholsterers who all knew the car’s history and I paid them to restore it just as it was.”

For Hank it was also about memories – reminding him of one of the first car’s he had owned – an 850cc Mini from the same era. He had upgraded from a Morris Minor, at-tracted by the Mini’s superior ‘street cred’.

“It’s small, it’s smart and pretty fast. It’s a bit ‘hot roddy’,” says Hank – describing the ap-peal that got him into Minis to begin with.

“It was definitely very exciting if you had a Mini, but the one you definitely wanted to have was the Mini Cooper S.”

Hank still takes his restored Cooper S out for a drive occasionally, including taking it to the Mini Day in Taupo most years where he reaches speeds of over 100mph in speed tests every year.

“I always drive it myself, I’m the biggest boy in town.”

Chris, like his father, is a big fan of Minis – but is always surprised by just how many people stop to look at the restored 1965 model whenever it is on display at the yard.

“Everybody loves them. Everyone has got a story about someone who had one or about their own experiences,” says Chris.
