In light of the recent changes in immigration legislation bythe UK Border Agency (UKBA), this booklet outlines your visaresponsibilities as an international student. It also provides contacts& information together with a student visa checklist.

It is important that you read this information very carefully as it is

your responsibility to obey the law

ATTENDANCE

Student responsibility: Itisyourresponsibilitytoensurethatyouattend 100%oyourcourse.Yourstudentvisastatesthat youmustprovidesatisactoryevidenceoregular attendanceoallcoursesattended.Inadditionyou arerequiredtoattendmonthlymeetingswithyour acultycontact.Youwillbeinormedoyouraculty contactandthelocationoyourfrstmeetingat enrolment.

To work out when your monthly meetings will start,follow these steps:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

AnyabsencesmustbeauthorisedbyyourFaculty- anytripsbackhomemustbetakenduringvacation timeexceptinthecaseoanemergencywhenit

KEEPING TO THE CONDITIONS OF YOUR VISA

Student responsibility: Working- IyouareonaTier4studentvisaandyouappliedor yourvisabeore3rd March 2010andyouhave permissiontowork,youmustnotworkanymorethan

20hoursperweekduringtermtimewhichincludesany timetakentowriteupyourdissertationortakeexamre-sits. IyouareonaTier4studentvisaandyouappliedor yourvisaon or after3rd March 2010andyouhave permissiontowork,thenumberohoursthatyoucan workduringtermtimedependsonwhatcourseyouare studying:

Students on degree or foundation degree level courses: Iyouhavepermissiontoworkonyourstudentvisa,you mustnotworkanymorethan20hoursperweekduring termtimewhichincludesanytimetakentowriteup yourdissertationortakeexamre-sits. Students on below degree or foundation degree

level courses:

Iyouhavepermissiontoworkonyourstudentvisa,you mustnotworkmorethan10hoursperweekduring termtimewhichincludesanytimetakenorexamre-sits. Iyouareunsureothetypesoworkthatyouhave permissionorpleasecontactStudentServices contactdetailsareatthebackothisbooklet.

Public Funds -Onastudentvisa,youarenotallowed

toapplyoranypublicunds.Publicundsmeansthe ollowingtypesoUKwelarebeneft:incomesupport; income-basedjobseekersallowance;housingand homelessnessassistance;housingbeneft;counciltax beneft;workingtaxcredit;asocialundpayment; childbeneft;anydisabilityallowance;state pensioncredit;childtaxcredit;attendanceallowance; carersallowance;incomerelatedemploymentand

supportallowance;healthinpregnancygrant. Anythingnotincludedinthelistisnotregardedas publicunds.

mustregisterwiththePolice,youmustdosowithin 7daysoarrivalintheUK.Iyouchangeaddressor courseorextendyourvisa,youmustvisitthePolice tohaveyourcertifcateupdated.

Please note:Iyouorgettoregisterwiththe Police,thiscouldhaveseriousconsequences oranyutureentryclearanceapplicationsthat

youmakeabroad.Youcouldbebarredrom comingbacktotheUKor12months(andin somecasesfveortenyears).Itwillalsocause problemsoryouwhenobtainingimmigration extensionsintheUK.Iyourpassportor identitycarddoesnottellyoutoregisterwith thePolice,youdonotneedtodothis.

EXTENDING YOUR STUDENT VISA: Thinkaboutyourvisaextension4monthsbeoreitexpiresandbookontoavisa workshopatleast4weeksbeore.Youmustbookaplaceiyouwishtoattenda visaworkshop:www.bcu.ac.uk/studentservices/events

Keepphotocopies-passport,visa,IDcardorForeignNationals(iyouhave one),policeregistrationcertifcate,ighttickets(asyoumightneedtoprovide theseoryourvisaextension)andotherimportantdocuments.

Keepyourpassportsaeandalwayspostyourvisaextensionapplicationby specialdelivery-youwillneedtodothisatthePostOfce.

Youmustobtain40pointstogetastudentvisaextension: 30points-ConfrmationoAcceptanceorStudies(CAS)

10points-Maintenanceundsavailabletoyou

YouwillneedtogettheCASromyouraculty.Pleasenotethatithereismore thanonemonthbetweenyourvisaexpirydateandthedatethecoursewillstart orcontinue(iitisyourcurrentcourse)youwillnotbeabletogetaCASto extendyourvisaintheUK.Itcantakeupto7workingdaystoproduceaCASso leaveplentyotime.YoumustusetheCASoryourvisaapplicationwithin6months oissueoritbecomesinvalid.

Youwillalsoneedtoprovideevidencethatyouhavetherequiredamounto

money.Thisshouldbeintheormoabankstatementcoveringa28day period,whichshouldbenomorethan1montholdsoremembertoleaveplenty otimetoorderthisatthebankinecessary.Youcanalsouseyourparentsor legalguardiansbankstatementtoshowthatyouhavethecorrectmaintenance undsavailabletoyou.Iyouuseyourparentsstatementsyouwillalsoneedto provideyourbirthcertifcateshowingyourrelationshiptothatpersonandaletter romthemgivingpermission.
