Welcome to the Bolton Council of Mosques 2nd Edition of the Connect Newsletter.

In this edition we will share with you some of the work that the Bolton Council of Mosques have undertaken in the last five months, and give you updates on projects that we working for the future.

We at the Bolton Council of Mosques, have also been affected by the financial stability that is affecting many small and large organisations. This has given us a chance to review our priorities and direction and with this changes are going to be inevitable in relation to the work we can deliver in the future.

The aims of the Big Society encouraging volunteering and developing champions is not a new area of work and with the limited resources we have had in the past and will have in the future, we will carry on some of the key engagement with the commitment and the support of our mosques and volunteers.

This edition captures the work we have undertaken as part of our young people’s projects, sharing with you some of the success and projects into the future.

The work within the community supported by our volunteers has been invaluable.

Some of the groups setup, now with their own governance and work plans supported and administered by the BCoM continues to grow from strength to strength and is testament to the time and commitment given by the volunteers.

The Mosque, which has been hailed as an example to others around the country, was given a Marque of Excellence by the North West multi Faith Tourism Association.

Joanna Booth, of the association, said: “This mosque shows amazing level of community outreach. “The work it has done to promote cultural awareness and the way it opens its doors to welcome anyone of any faith is to be commended.

“It is unique in the country and is an example to other Mosques, locally and nationally, for the way it welcomes others.”

Funeral And Burial Training

Managing and organising funerals and burials when a member of the community passes away has always been at the forefront of the work all Mosques undertake in Bolton.

Bolton Council of Mosques, for over 10 years, has been working very closely with key members of the Mosques and the authorities to establish a 5 star funeral and burial service. This service we provide can only be done with the support of volunteers and the guidance of the Almighty.

Wednesday 3rd November 2010 saw over 50 volunteers attend the Bolton Council of Mosques to take part in a Funeral and Burial training programme .The Training Programme Covered :

• What to do in the event of a Death

• Legal requirements

• Volunteers role in BCoM Funeral and Burial services

Information On The Disposal And Burial Of The Placenta (Afterbirth)

Parents who take their baby’s placenta home must take full responsibility for the disposal of the placenta. The placenta should be buried with due care as it is a part of the human body. A service is now available for parents to bury the placenta at Heaton cemetery. This can be done by contacting the cemetery explaining that you need to dispose of the placenta and they in turn will bury it for you.

MRI Scans For Non-Invasive Post Mortem

The Law of our country states that where a cause of death is not identified or the death is suspicious, the Coroner will order a Post Mortem. In most cases this is an invasive post mortem, which involves dissecting the body of the deceased.

In Islam the human body, dead or alive, has great significance. It is honoured and sacred, and because of the sanctity that is attached to it, it will be unlawful, according to Islamic belief, to tamper with it, cut parts of it, or dishonour it in any way. As stated in a hadith of our beloved prophet (pbuh) “to break a bone of a dead person is like breaking a bone of a living person”.

The Post Mortem can be very distressful for the bereaved family and it is our belief and also affects the deceased. To preserve the dignity of the deceased and reduce the pain for the bereaved family, BCoM have in collaboration with the HM Coroners adopted a protocol for the use of MRI scans as an option where a non-invasive PM can be used to identify the cause of death. This has now been in place over the past few years and is available to everyone across Greater Manchester. BCoM provides a service to co-ordinate MRI scans for all Muslims across Greater Manchester. We have also offered this service to Preston and Nottingham and continue to provide valuable support to other towns across the country to share our good practice.

It must be noted that the use of MRI Scans is not an alternative and can not be used in all cases. The Coroner will decide whether or not the use of MRI Scan and will be dependent on the medical history and individual circumstances and therefore the Coroner will have no choice but to order an invasive post mortem as required by law.

Anyone wishing to find out more or discuss this further can call Mohammed Mangera through the BCoM office.

Works Start To Extend Heaton Cemetery

Plans to extend Heaton Cemetery are progressing on schedule. The extension is an exciting and ambitious plan to create a flagship cemetery, which aims to provide good quality open space, amenity, and burial space.

The plans were drawn up 2007 following a review of cemeteries and of the town’s requirements, which demonstrated a clear need for more burial space.

BCoM have been fully involved in the consultation process to ensure the Muslim communities needs and requirements can be accommodated in the proposals.

Works started on Phase 1 in summer 2009 which involved earthworks and road widening which was completed in 2009. Phase two is currently on-site and includes new infrastructure works, roads, drainage and car parking and is due to be completed early 2011.

The final phase of works to include seeding, cultivation and planting is due to start in spring 2011 and it is anticipated that the cemetery will be ready for burials late 2011 / early 2012. BCoM are undertaking further consultation in respect of he next phase and anyone wishing to contribute can contact the BCoM office.

Muslim Youngsters Angling for Change

IT is traditionally seen as the preserve of white males, sitting by the riverbank to get a few hours away from the wife. But there are moves in Bolton to change the stereotypical view of angling.

Faith leaders have been working alongside fishing experts to get more young Asians involved in the sport. Organised by Bolton Council of Mosques, and funded through a grant from Faith4Change, the young Muslims took part in angling sessions over two days held by the Get Hooked On Fishing scheme at Bradshaw Fisheries.

Get Hooked On Fishing coordinator Bridget Dawson said: “The two days were really successful. “The lads overcame their fears about fishing and handling bait, and we are really pleased that they want to come back and do more sessions in the future.

“I feel we have gone some way to breaking down the stereotypical image of angling being a white, maledominated sport as we have a Muslim group being taught by a female coach and her colleagues.”

Bolton Council of Mosques helped to organise similar sessions in the past to get people involved with different sports. Rizwan Buchiya, aged 18, is a Bolton Sixth Form College student who took part in the sessions.

He said: “It was good. It was a new experience and I would like to pass on the skills I have learnt.

“Fishing is not a regular thing in the Asian community, so it was good to do something different.”

Qualified coaches Andy Ormrod and John Preston helped to teach the group how to set up the equipment, catch and put the fish back safely and how to use different rods.

Female Youth Work Programmes In Great Lever And Farnworth

The work which has been carried out through BCoM across Great Lever and Farnworth area have helped young females from the BME community take part in many rich activities and courses. Girls have developed skills in various areas from designing their own henna patterns for simple events to fancy designs for occasions such as weddings and Eid. They have shown competence in decorating cakes for special occasion’s, using fondant, piping and various other equipments including gum paste to make the flowers from scratch.

Work is also being delivered in partnership with local schools in Farnworth. Harper Green School. For more information contact Reme Begum on 01204 363680.

Female Youth Work Programmes In Crompton

Youth provisions are an important part of the social worlds of young people and tend to be positively valued by those who participate. Bolton Council of Mosques has introduced a number of provisions for young people in the Crompton area. Young people clearly valued this opportunity for social contact and appreciated having access to a place where they could meet or make friends. Organised activities provided young people with the chance to develop new skills and take part in activities which might normally be outside their reach, gain useful information on personal and social issues and to take part in decision-making and learn team work skills.

Young people from the Crompton area volunteered for the National Play Day. The number of people who attended the event was astounding but the young people demonstrated a strong level of commitment and determination in ensuring that everybody had the opportunity to be engaged.Young people from the Crompton area also went fishing which is traditionally perceived as a sport enjoyed predominantly by white males. Young girls from BME background, however, challenged this stereotype by taking part in the sport.

A youth club is also active for young girls in the Crompton area and is open to all young people aged 5-19. Young people can drop in and are encouraged to join in the club’s programmes. For more information, contact Rookaya on 01204 363680.

Anti-Bullying Week

A partnership with the Deane And Willows Neighbourhood Policing Team saw information delivered to the local Madrasahs in Bolton. A growing concern from local community members about young people being bullied for family jewellery and other information, triggered the need for awareness of how young people and teachers can help tackle the issues.

The BCOM Health Forum

The BCoM Health Forum which comprises of GPs, Consultants and Pharmacists from across Bolton was established a number of years ago as a voluntary think-tank and active body to ensure that the health needs of the Muslim community are recognised and addressed by the relevant health providers. A number of initiatives delivered by the BCoM Health Forum that you may have come across include, The Big Bolton Health Check, The MRI & Burial Services, The Circumcision Clinic and The Hajj Vaccination Programmes, to name a few. The recent White paper ‘Liberating the NHS’ is proposing significant changes to the health landscape, creating a more prominent role for GPs as commissioners of health services.

The current arrangement’s for Bolton is yet unclear. The Health forum have been discussing the challenges and opportunites for the future and is making an approach to the interim consortia leads for discussion and to give support to future arrangements.

If you are a working in the Health Sector and have a passion of making a difference in the community and want to join the health forum, then don’t hesitate to contact Dr Liaqat natha for an informal chat.

Burial Of Islamic Literature

In almost all Muslim homes you will find old Qurans which are no longer useable, leaflets, books, and other literature with sacred text. The issue facing Muslims is how to dispose of this sacred text. It is not an option to just throw them in the bin.

The best option would be to bury the literature by wrapping it in something clean first, in a place where people would not normally walk. It would be permissible to tie the literature with something heavy and cast them into a flowing river.

The Bolton Council of Mosques has worked in partnership with Bolton cemetery to facilitate the disposal of Islamic literature for a number of years now. This year the burial took place on Saturday 9th October 2010 between 10.30am and 1.00pm. It was a very busy morning and credit has to go to the volunteers – Gaffar Patel, Anwar Raee, Yusuf Kathrada and David and his team from the Cemetary – who ensured that everything ran smoothly.

2011 Census: Help Tomorrow Take Shape

The census is coming to every household in England & Wales on Sunday 27 March 2011. It is vital that we all complete our census questionnaire as Bolton receives funding based on the number of people living here from government for schools, hospitals, transport and emergency services. It is all confidential, so no one will see your personal information. Help with completing the census questionnaire will be available at a number of centres around Bolton.

The census is also bringing up to 140 temporary jobs based in the various neighbourhoods of Bolton for local people. If you would like to apply please go to: CensusJobs.co.uk

Bolton Council of Mosques Operations Manager directly at the Birmingham offices shared some of the concerns the Indian community was experiencing when applying or visiting the visa offices.

The constant message was that all the information was transparent and accessible on the Website and that individuals can email the Consular General directly to raise a query.

The Same message was shared when a meeting was organised by Business Bolton with the consular general at Bolton Library.

Our JourneyByMasoodMirza

We started out leadership journey many months agoLearning new skills quickly, but some, very slow. Hindus, Muslims and Christians tooMany faiths represented, a right motley crew. Brilliantly organised by Salma - who stayed ahead of the gameA big thank you from us all, that’s your two minutes of fame! Aamer- as trainers go, you couldn’t get better or higherParticularly with one that looks like Mike McKintyre! With Yaseers’ support drive and energy, something he didn’t lackBut for some strange reason, he’d always sit at the back! Day one came and we loved every hourThe fish bowl started, and the mood became very sour. I missed this session - prior engagement for the nightReturned to hear, there was nearly a fight! Aamer’s charm grew on us all, and we all became a fanLittle did we realise this was all his cunning plan! The next time we met Henry V was the manAn inspirational leader who made you believe that YOU CAN. The Good King and Medicine Woman - leadership styles we learntGREAT MOTHER and WARRIOR but remember,Respect has to be earnt. The HAKKA was performed finishing off with a roarCouldn’t believe my eyes when Hoda asked for more.

Inhibitions put aside and lungs about to popNo oxygen left and we’re all about to drop. MBTI was next, Dr Akbar came to deliver his speechBut unfortunately for him some were falling asleep. Through no fault of his own, I have to explainIt was all Aamer’s fault, putting us through so much pain. Worked us till late, and then we go to fill our belly“Watch this video he said”, sorry but we’d prefer to watch telly. Upset he was although he tried not to showUnited we stood as our confidence began to grow Diversity and prejudice was looked at at lengthMartin Luther King was an example of inner strength I upset a few with the occasional wise crackRemain grateful to Carol for not giving me a slap We have some characters in this beautiful crowd Some very quiet and some very loud!! Karens a great laugh when she puts on her family bootsLove it when she gets in the zone with her carribean roots(imitates Carribbean accent) Rev Lawrence - a man with love and kindness for allTopped up with a smile the length of the Great China Wall Then there’s Sabir Sahib, an equal opportunity supporter, so for everyone there’s hope,You’ll get on in his workplace, as long as you’re a bloke! Respect to Maulana Yunus the introvert, the I-phone manE-mailing Waleed whenever he can. Our thoughts are with Tay, the mother to beMight give us all a surprise when she has not one, not two but maybe three!

We wish her the best and hope she’s always happyAnd remembers her friends when she’s changing the nappy. Day 1- I met and sat next to Tracy, who likes to mutterAfter 5 minutes I thought, the girls a flamin nutter With the most, caring, fun, empathy, humour and love in her handIs it any wonder when she’s from cloud cuckoo land. But joking apart, I know this girl likes to prayI ‘m really happy to have met her cause’ she always made my day! So this journeys over and your leadership challenge beginsIf you’re struggling at work, then look deep within. You’ve all demonstrated qualities, so don’t try to hide Develop as a community leader, and fill us with pride. So use your new skills in your day to day life And if you’re feeling courageous – why not try it on the wife. I’ve been humbled and blessed to have met you lovely folksEven some of the women acting like blokes! But seriously for once you can all play a special partRepresenting your communities from the bottom of your heart You are all special people, may God bless you allRemember, straight back and always stand tall! Salma asked me “go on, do it for the cause”So Ill stop now and as taught by Aamir, Wait for the applause!!

24 Counselling

www.thebcom.org

Our Work With The Spinney Rehabilitation Service Manchester

A report compiled by Stephen Maynard; Muslim Mental Health; A scoping paper on theoretical models, practice and related mental health concerns in Muslim Communities (2008), highly recommends and encourages ‘talking therapies’ as a mode of intervention for Muslim prisoners suffering from mental health problems. The BCoM Counselling service has, for the past two years been working very closely with The Spinney; Mental Health rehabilitation service, implementing the findings of this thorough report. Our counsellors make a monthly visit to see the Muslim patients in this medium secure centre, providing a positive model of care.

Our aim is to provide a patient-centered approach with a focus on empowering individuals by working with them to develop their independence and self-management.

On average our counsellor sees around six to ten patients, with varying issues and concerns, at each visit. The rehabilitation centre acknowledges the success and benefits of our intervention and throughout the two years many patients have been released back in to the community to lead a relatively normal and meaningful life.

As a scope of our work we can cite a case study of a patient who was admitted some six months ago with no understanding of the English language.

Through the intervention of our counsellor through the medium of Arabic, the patient has settled in admirably and is making steady progress in both his grasp of the English language and his mental state. So many other successful and happy endings can be cited to emphasize the positive outcomes of such ‘talking therapies’ and partnership work of this nature.
