For 2016, the categories are: Outstanding Contribution; Coach of the Year and Young Coach of the Year. Chance to Shine In 2015, 71 schools and 2,900 children across the county participated in the Chance to Shine programme. Our programme in 2016 will be even larger and we are always looking to work with schools that would like to use cricket as a way of helping to develop their young people. For details email [email protected]. NatWest Cricket Force 1-3 April 2016 Bring your players, members and community together to get your ground and clubhouse ready for the new season! It’s a great event for getting work done and improving team spirit. In the past, projects have ranged from simple paint jobs and sight screen scrubbing to brand-new changing rooms, function rooms and new pavilions. Bedford Cricket Club has been selected by the ECB as one of three clubs in the country to host a special weekend and cricket legend Mike Gatting will be helping out on 3 April, as well as other first-class cricketers. All volunteers are welcome at the club – it promises to be a great community event! Bedfordshire has 18 clubs registered for NatWest CricketForce so far – register at: https://nwcf.ecb.co.uk. Lady Taverners Indoor (Schools) Girls’ Competition 2016 This year, Bedfordshire has 40 teams from 22 schools taking part in the Competition at Under 13 and Under 15. All schools with year groups 7-10 were offered the opportunity to enter a team and receive 10 hours of free coaching with their girls (funded through the Chance to Shine programme) to prepare the teams. The U13 finals will be held on 22 March 10am- 3pm and the U15 finals on 23 March 10am-3pm, both at Inspire Sports Village, Luton. Winners in each category will go on to represent Bedfordshire at the regional finals. New Coach Support Workers Bedfordshire Cricket is delighted to announce that more than 20 candidates have successfully completed the Coach Support Worker courses held in October and January. They will now be equipped with the skills to assist qualified coaches in the delivery of high- quality coaching sessions within a club environment, including running warm up and cool down sessions. Club Welfare Officer training Is your Club Welfare Officer fully trained and accredited ready for the 2016 season? Bedfordshire Cricket will run a Safe Hands Workshop for Refreshing Club Welfare Officers on Wednesday 16 March 2016 at Bedford College 6pm to 9pm. In addition to the Safe Hands Workshop, the Club Welfare Officer must complete a Safeguarding & Protecting Children Certificate and a cricket-specific DBS check. All training and the DBS have a three-year validity period. In addition, pre-season briefing sessions will take place on 7 April at Flitwick Cricket Club and 12 April at Ickwell Cricket Club at 7.30pm. To book a place email [email protected]. Club volunteer training up to date? In preparation for the forthcoming season, please ensure all your club volunteers are up to date with any training or DBS checks that are required to fulfil their role. For example, a cricket-specific DBS check is always required for Coaches, Coach Assistants, Team Managers, Scorers, Umpires, Team Captains and Club Welfare Officers (as above). New Wicketz Hub Bedfordshire Cricket is pleased to announce a New Wicketz Hub in Luton – the Luton Town and Indians Wicketz Club – starting on 29 February and taking place at Denbigh High School on Mondays 5-6pm. The Lord’s Taverners Wicketz Programme, delivered in partnership with Bedfordshire Cricket over the next three years, will set up year-round community-based cricket clubs in Luton known as Wicketz Hubs. They are aimed at giving disadvantaged children aged 8-15 an opportunity to not only play cricket, but to improve their health and well-being, leading to better lifestyles and the ability to contribute more in their community. There will also be work with partners to deliver workshops to the children on a variety of different issues. For details email [email protected]. Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week 20-24 June 2016 Schools all over the country will celebrate cricket during Yorkshire Tea National Cricket Week. Over 1,600 schools take part in this Chance to Shine event every year and turn their timetable over to cricket. As part of their support for the event, Yorkshire Tea will be giving out tea samples to all schools and clubs that sign up for the event. Jewson Privilege Account Scheme The 2016 Jewson Privilege Account Scheme is now open and so all clubs that have registered for NatWest CricketForce can apply. If your application is successful the club will pay a £50 deposit and will then be given an additional £300 to spend at the local Jewson branch. The application is via an online form in the same location as a club’s NatWest CricketForce registration form at: https://nwcf.ecb.co.uk. Don’t miss out on this fantastic scheme to help the work you’re doing for NatWest CricketForce. Cricket for visually impaired players Bedfordshire Cricket, working with Sight Concern and team BEDS&LUTON, is excited to be able to offer cricket for visually impaired players. The sessions are open to anyone with a visual impairment aged 14 and older who would like to try cricket, no previous experience is necessary. The sessions will take place at the new Flitwick Leisure Centre from 11am-1pm on Mondays 29 February, and 7 and 14 March. To book a place please email sally.church@ bedscricket.co.uk. Cricket Activator course Bedfordshire Cricket is running a Cricket Activator course on Tuesday 5 April at Flitwick Cricket Club 10am- 2pm. The course is designed to help 13- 16 year olds assist with coaching sessions and matches and is specifically aimed at those who already play for a club. It will also signpost further opportunities to progress as part of the cricket workforce. The fee is £10. For details email sally. [email protected]. Coaching Workshops The Bedfordshire Coaches Association is offering a series of Workshops before the start of the season including Running Net Sessions (10 February), Swing and Seam (27 February), Warm Ups, The Fundamentals and Fitness for Cricket (8 March) and Coaching the Unconventional Shots (23 March). These sessions are open to both members and non-members of the Association and costs are £10 (£5 for Bedfordshire Coaches Association members) apart from Swing and Seam which costs £20 (£10 for Bedfordshire Coaches Association members). Bedford College is busy every week night with training for over 110 of the counties best young cricketers from Under 10s to Under 17s. The three young cricketers on the Emerging Player Programme (EPP) – Alex Rennie, Danyaal Maliki and Fayaz Homyoon – have been invited to join in with the Essex EPP at the county ground at Chelmsford for a session this month. This will give the boys a taste of a first-class environment and also a chance to showcase their skills. Under 21s and 2nd XI players are also getting ready for the new season. Former Derbyshire and Bedfordshire opening batsman Steve Stubbings is running six sessions for some selected young players, who will also be joined by some Bedfordshire 1st XI players. During the season, the squads will play a mixture of ECB-led competitions and friendly matches that will take the boys to counties all over the country. Full funding award Bedfordshire Cricket has been awarded full funding from the England and Wales Cricket Trust (EWCT) for each of the funding streams – Player Retention, Disability Participation and EWCT discretionary funding. This funding has been released as a result of delivery against agreed outcomes through insight-led action plans, partnership working and self-assessment against High Performing County Cricket Board characteristics. The funding package includes investment from Sport England and supports the collective mission to get ‘more people playing more frequently in teams’. New Saturday T20 cricket league Bedfordshire Cricket is pleased to announce the introduction of the County’s first ever Saturday T20 League, our very own version of the Big Bash or Blast. The Bedford and District Cricket League voted to make this innovative move to the fast moving, exciting, shorter format – just three hours – making the games closer in time span to other popular team sports such as football and rugby. This is as a result of the national and local feedback that clearly shows players desire for different formats of the game to fit in with family life and time pressures. T20 increases the tempo of cricket and makes the sport more appealing, accessible and attractive for players and spectators alike. The new Bedford and District T20 Cricket League is open to players and clubs at all levels with financial rewards for the winners and runners up of each division. If your club would like to enter a team or teams in this exciting new League please email [email protected] Bedfordshire Cricket is again offering Sixth Form Students a Young Leader development opportunity through an indoor cricket initiative – Indoor 24. This quick-fire, fast-paced form of the game is aimed at participation that is played during lunch periods, after school or enrichment time. All participating schools receive 6 hours of coaching. Schools taking part so far are: Sandy Upper, Cedars Upper, Mark Rutherford, Redbourne Upper, Sharnbrook Upper, All Saints Academy and Bedford Academy. The final will take place on 22 February at The Bunyan Centre, Bedford. If any schools are interested in being part of this exciting initiative, please email dominic.chatfield@bedscricket. co.uk. Half-term Master Class Places are still available on the Junior Cricket Coaching Master Class 17-19 February (half-term break). The Bedfordshire Cricket Academy Master Classes are for boys and girls from school years 4 to 7 and run at Bedford College from 9.30am to 4pm. Activities include: the basics of batting and bowling; developing power into your cricket shots; developing pace and power into your bowling; and taking part in an indoor tournament. The cost is £100 for the three days (with a £5 sibling discount). Please note there will also be a Master Class in the Easter break 6-8 April. To book call 01234 291823. One-to-one Coaching Sessions The last few sessions are available on 15 and 16 February 9am- 5pm (half-term break) and on the following Monday evenings 6-9pm: 22 and 29 February and 7 and 14 March.
