MAKE THE CONNECTION

After meeting in the Ecological Restoration program, Julia Alards-Tomalin, Deanna MacTavish, and Tara Matthews founded Echo Ecological — their own environmental contracting company. They use their passion for habitat restoration to help rebuild damaged ecosystems, such as the Seymour River estuary in North Vancouver.

Meet Julia, Deanna, and Tara at bcit.ca/appliedsciences

Shaping your futureThe natural resources we all rely on are finite, and at BCIT we’re committed to making changes in the way we use them. Imagine a world where we use 75% less energy every day. Now imagine you’re leading the way in sustainability initiatives that will impact generations to come.

A SMALLER FOOTPRINT

Picture living in a world where we all use less. At BCIT, we’re aiming to reduce our energy and materials consumption by 75%. Our Factor Four initiative will increase energy efficiency and produce energy from renewable sources. For instance, the NE1 building on campus will be heated by wood scraps from Construction programs. This means a reduction of 250,000 kg of waste and greenhouse gas emissions by 250 tonnes of CO2.

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH CAMPUS

Guichon Creek has become an iconic landmark on BCIT’s Burnaby Campus, with Fish, Wildlife and Recreation students continually studying and restoring it. But not long ago, the now vibrant ecosystem was severely degraded, and resembled a lifeless ditch. Today, thanks to the tireless efforts of students and Rivers Institute faculty, Guichon Creek is a thriving urban stream. While there is still work to be done to bring the creek to its full potential, BCIT and its students are committed to making that happen.

Giving backAt BCIT, we’re committed to building a world we want to live in. From remote villages in Nepal to community fundraising, our students and faculty are making a real difference. So will you.

LIGHTS OF HOPE

For over a decade, BCIT Electrical Foundation students have donated their skills and time to the Lights of Hope campaign at St. Paul’s Hospital. Every year, the hospital becomes a backdrop to a spectacular display of lights to help raise money for their Foundation. The preparation takes more than 800 hours to put together and uses more than 700,000 bulbs. Led by instructor Don Zaklan, the electrical students test, set up, and wire the display, stepping out of the classroom and helping a great cause.

BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW

When a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Kathmandu and outlying areas in Nepal in April 2015, BCIT Civil Engineering instructor and Nepalese citizen, Bishnu Pandey, stepped in to help. Leading a team of fellow engineers and geoscientists— including fellow BCIT instructor Svetlana Brzev — Bishnu travelled through the region, assessing the damage to buildings and advising government officials and engineers on how to lessen the impact of tragedies such as this. Using his expertise in building code, Bishnu and his team will help local authorities rebuild Kathmandu and update current building codes to create safer, more stable buildings for the future.

Shaping your careerAt BCIT you’ll make connections that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s through internships, business consulting projects, co-ops, or mentorships, you’ll have more opportunities to network with the people who will help shape your career than anywhere else.

LEARN FROM THE BEST

You won’t have to imagine what your future career will be like, you’ll get a first-hand point of view when you study at BCIT. Our faculty have personal connections with industry and will share them with you throughout your program. Learn from Jason Brett, an engineering and robotics instructor, and one of BC’s top technical experts in the field. Or take a class with Sheila Early, a pioneer in forensic nursing who regularly consults with City of Surrey hospitals. You could also have award-winning architect Peter Levar guide you through your architecture degree. No matter what your field of choice, our experienced instructors will make your time at BCIT invaluable.

GREAT IDEAS START HERE

Trade textbooks for experience through projects, applied research, internships, and more. At BCIT, students can take a concept and run with it.

Business Operations Management grads, Aman Mann, Kenneth Loi, and Eugene Dong turned an idea that grew out of a business consulting project into a successful software business called Procurify. They’ve received more than $5M in seed funding from business giants like Mark Cuban, Nexus Venture Partners, and the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC).

Left: Rob Kruger, Critical Care Nursing faculty, BCIT’s School of Health Sciences — named to Apple’s Distinguished Educator (ADE) Class of 2015.

Below: Biotechnology at BCIT.

Page 21: BCIT Viewbook 2016/17

TRANSFORM YOUR INDUSTRYAfter Mardonn Chua and Darson Du graduated from the Biotechnology program in 2014, they joined forces to conduct inventive human stem cell research that could revolutionize the way the medical industry tests products. In essence, the duo wants to create the world’s first human stem cell library, where they will store stem cells in bulk from every key demographic of the population. The catch is that they’ve only been funded for 100 days — and when that clock runs out, they’ll have to prove to their investors that their company deserves further funding. Lucky for Mardonn and Darson, the skills they acquired at BCIT have prepared them for this moment and they’re ready to make history.

RISE ABOVE THE COMPETITION

With stiff competition at events like the Western Engineering Competition, Polytechnics Canada, and Skills Canada, BCIT students continually bring home top prizes.

Students have showcased their expertise on a national stage, inventing everything from an improved mountain bike transmission to a computer mouse that uses eye-tracking technology for ALS patients. The talent and innovation that BCIT produces results not only in pride and prize money, it also gets the industry-recognition it deserves.
