Dear Friends:
We invite you to join us for our 35th Annual Southwest Virginia BCIA Performance Tested Bull Sale to be held on Saturday,
March 22 at 12:00 noon. Special thanks to Tim Sutphin and family, along with Mike Hall and Clay East at Hillwinds Farm for
developing the bulls and their commitment to the missions of the BCIA program. We invite you to the test facility outside Dublin
for our annual Open House which will be held on Sunday March 16, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. This will be an excellent time to view
the bulls and visit with the breeders and test station staff.
It is an exciting time to be in the beef business. We are witnessing record cattle prices and we have seen some reprieve in
input costs the last few months. Projections are for these trends to continue for the foreseeable future. There is no better time
to invest in quality genetics that will help move your herd forward and better position your operation for times to come. This
year’s sale offering upholds the strong reputation that has been established over the last 35 years of the Southwest Bull Sale. We
encourage you to closely study the pedigrees, performance, and EPDs of this set of bulls, which our BCIA member breeders have
assembled with your needs in mind. This year’s sale offering is one that is very deep in quality in all the breeds. Please know that
BCIA stands behind these bulls 100% and our guarantee provides assurance on their soundness and fertility and a promise to
you as the buyer from the breeders that they stand behind their product.
In response to rising feed costs, we made a switch to a silage-based ration to develop the bulls this year. We believe the bulls
are in ideal working condition, and ready to go home and do the job for you. You will also note that several of the bulls have
genomically enhanced EPDs, which is an additional tool to provide you will better EPD predictions with enhanced accuracy (see
prelude for more details).
Be sure to utilize the video footage of all the sale bulls, which is available through our BCIA webpage- the link can be found
on the front cover and facing page of this catalog. As always, we will have bidding available over the tel-o-auction, or feel free
give one of us a call if you need assistance prior to or during the sale. We would be happy to assist you any way we can to secure
a bull that meets your needs.
Again this year, we will offer a high quality set of fall-calving females through the BCIA-Influenced Bred Heifer Sale.
All heifers are certified as Virginia Premium Assured Plus females, and each has met specific standards for genetic merit,
reproductive soundness, physical correctness, and health status. Many of the heifers are multiple-generation AI, and sell
guaranteed bred to calving ease bulls. These females originate from excellent herds which have been marketing heifers for several
years, and have a strong track record of success.
The bulls will be delivered to the sale facility in Wytheville the day prior to the sale. Call any of the consignors, Tim Sutphin,
or myself if we can be of assistance in any way. We hope to see you sale day.
Sincerely,
Scott P. Greiner

ABOUT THE BULLS ANd THEIr PErFOrMANcEScott P. Greiner, Extension Animal Scientist- Virginia Tech
The Virginia BCIA contracts with Hillwinds Farm at Dublin, VA to develop bulls for its members with the following basic objectives: (a) To provide a standard, impartial postweaning gain test and development program that will furnish records which will be useful to the buyer and consignor in their breeding programs; (b) To provide a source of and market for performance tested bulls; (c) To provide quality genetics which address the demands of the industry, and (d) To serve as an educational tool for beef cattle improvement and promotion.
How the Bulls Have Been HandledEighty seven Senior bulls (calved September 15 through December 31, 2012) and 106 Junior bulls (calved January 1 through March 31, 2013) were delivered to the SWBTS on October 1, 2013 and went on test October 22 following a 22 day warm-up period. Both Senior and Junior bulls completed the 112-day test February 11. Upon delivery to the station bulls were vaccinated for clostridial diseases, IBR, PI3, BVD, BRSV, Pasturella, Haemophilus Somnus, and dewormed. They were fed a silage ration supplemented with dry corn and a complete feed supplied by Performance Feed & Livestock Company. Bulls also had access to hay throughout the test. The ration was formulated to contain a minimum of 75% TDN and 13% crude protein on a dry-matter basis.Sale RequirementsQualifications for bulls selling within each breed test group was based on the following criteria:Growth EPDs: All bulls selling meet minimum genetic requirements (YW EPD) for Virginia Quality Assured (VQA) Purple Tag Feeder Calf Program.Frame Score: Minimum frame score of 5.0 for all breeds.Reproductive Soundness: All bulls have been subjected to a breeding soundness evaluation including scrotal circumference measure, internal palpation, and penal inspection. Senior bull evaluation included semen evaluation, and has satisfactory rating as defined by the Socitey for Theriogenology.Conformation: A committee evaluated all bulls for structural soundness and phenotype. Unsound or unsuitable bulls have been eliminated.Sale Eligibility and Order: Additional bulls were eliminated and sale order established using an index combining individual performance (adjusted YW and test ADG) and EPDs (CED or BW, WW, YW, Milk, MB, REA).
Health and FertilityNegative TB, Brucellosis, and Anaplasmosis tests within 30 days prior to the sale. Negative BVD PI test at delivery. Out-of-state health papers available sale day. Performance records
Expected Progeny Differences (EPD)An EPD is an estimate of the genetic value of an animal as a parent. Specifically, EPDs predict the difference in performance of the future offspring of a parent, compared to the future offspring from another parent in the same breed. EPD values may only be directly compared between animals within the same breed.

Production and maternal ePdsCalving Ease Direct (CED)- Predicts the ease with which a bull’s calves will be born to first calf heifers. Higher EPD indicates a higher percentage of unassisted births.Birth Weight (BW)- Predicts differences in progeny birth weight, measured in pounds. Higher EPDs indicate heavier birth weights.Weaning Weight (WW)- Predictor of bull’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. Expressed in pounds.Yearling Weight (YW)- Predictor of bull’s ability to transmit pre and post-weaning growth to his progeny. Expressed in pounds. Scrotal Circumference (SC)- Predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to other sires, expressed in centimeters.Calving Ease Maternal (CEM)- Predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters.Maternal Milk (Milk)- Predictor of bull’s genetic ability to transmit milk and maternal ability to his daughters. EPD expressed as additional pounds of calf weaned by the bull’s daughters.
carcass ePdsPresented in the catalog are carcass EPDs, derived from pedigree information and the bull’s own ultrasound record. These EPDs are expressed on an age-constant basis.
Marbling (MB)- EPD predicts differences in USDA marbling score. Expressed in marbling score units.Ribeye Area (RE)- Predictor of bull’s genetic ability to transmit carcass ribeye area. EPD expressed in square inches. Fat Thickness (Fat)-Predicts differences in progeny external fat thickness, measured between the 12 and 13th ribs. EPD expressed in inches.Yield Grade (YG)- Predicts differences in progeny USDA Yield Grade (fat thickness, REA, carcass weight, KPH). Lower EPDs associated with more desireable YG (lower YG) and more carcass cutability.
ePd accuracy (acc)- Accuracy is an indicator of the reliability of an EPD. Accuracy values range from 0.0 to 1.0. Values approaching 1.0 are reflective of more information used in the calculation of the EPD, and less risk the EPD will change with additional information. I = interim EPD, PE or P = pedigree estimate, BK = backsolution EPD
multi-Trait Index ePds Angus Weaned Calf Value ($W)- Index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. Includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.Angus Beef Value ($B)- Represents the expected average dollar-per-head difference in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Combines estimates of genetic merit for growth and carcass merit, which are adjusted for differences in costs of production and expected premiums/discounts associated with grid marketing of progeny.Gelbvieh Carcass Value (CV)- The Carcass Merit EPD predicts differences in the dollar value associated with marketing progeny on a value-based carcass grid. Predicts the carcass value associated with selling carcasses on a grid based on quality grade, yield grade and weight specifications.Gelbvieh Feedlot Merit (FM)- Predicts differences in the dollar value associated with the expected gain and feedlot efficiency of progeny when fed in a typical feedlot arrangement.Hereford Baldy Maternal Index (BMI)- Index designed for commercial cow-calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows and heifers. Retained ownership of calves through the feedlot phase of production is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef pricing grid. Hereford Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB)- A terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB grid.Simmental Terminal Index (TI)- Predicts expected difference in economic merit between bulls when all progeny are placed in the feedlot and sold on a carcass grade and yield basis. EPD expressed in progeny dollars per head.Simmental All Purpose Index (API)- Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

MANAGEMENT OF ThE YOuNG BEEF BuLLScott P. Greiner Extension Animal Scientist- Virginia Tech
Management Prior to the Breeding SeasonYour newly purchased yearling bull has recently completed a
performance test, and has been managed to be body condition score 6 on sale day. This will give the bull adequate reserves of energy for use during the breeding season. Yearling bulls can be expected to lose 100 pounds or more during the course of the breeding season.
Acquiring a new yearling bull at least 60 to 90 prior to the breeding season is critical from several aspects. First, this leaves ample time for the new bull to get adjusted to the feed and environment of his new home, as well as an opportunity for several new bulls to be commingled for a period of time prior to turnout. Secondly, adequate exercise, in combination with a proper nutritional program, is essential to “harden” these bulls up prior to the breeding season. A facility for the newly acquired bull that allows for ample exercise will help create bulls that are physically fit for the breeding season. The nutrition of the bull will be dependent on body condition. Yearling bulls are still growing and developing, and should be targeted to gain 2.0 to 2.5 pounds per day from a year of age through the breeding season. Bulls weighing approximately 1200 pounds will consume 25 to 30 pounds of dry matter per day. This intake may consist of high quality pasture plus 12 lbs corn, grass legume hay plus 12 lbs corn, or 80 lbs corn silage plus 2 lbs protein supplement. Provide adequate clean water, and a complete mineral free-choice. Prior to the breeding season, all bulls should receive breeding soundness exams (BSE) to assure fertility. Bulls in this sale all passed a BSE. All bulls that are to be used should have a BSE annually. Because a variety of factors may affect bull fertility, it may be advisable to re-test these young bulls before the breeding season even if it has only been a few months since the pre-sale BSE. Management During the Breeding Season
The breeding season should be kept to a maximum of 60 days for young bulls. This will prevent over-use of the bull, severe weight loss and reduced libido. Severe weight loss may impair future growth and development of the young bull, and reduce his lifetime usefulness. When practical, supplementing young bulls with grain during the breeding season will reduce excessive weight loss.
In single-sire situations, young bulls can normally be expected to breed a number of females approximately equal to their age in months. Using this rule of thumb, a newly purchased bull that is 18 months of age could be placed with 18 cows or heifers. Bulls used together in multiple-sire breeding pastures should be of similar age and size. Young bulls cannot compete with older bulls in the same breeding pasture. A common practice is to rotate bulls among different breeding pastures every 21 to 28 days. This practice decreases the breeding pressure on a single bull. Some producers use older bulls early in the breeding season, and then replace them with young bulls. The appropriate bull to female ratio will vary from one operation to the next based on bull age, condition, fertility, and libido, as well as size of the breeding pasture, available forage supply, length of the breeding season and number of bulls with a group of cows.
All bulls should be observed closely to monitor their breeding behavior and libido to ensure they are servicing and settling cows. Additionally, observe the cowherd to monitor their estrous cycles. Many females coming back into heat may be the result of an infertile or subfertile bull. All bulls should be monitored for injury or lameness that may compromise their breeding capability. Management After the Breeding Season
Young bulls require a relatively high plane of nutrition following the breeding season to replenish body condition and meet demands for continued growth. Yearling bulls should be maintained in a separate lot from mature bulls, so these additional nutritional requirements can be provided. Body condition and projected mature size of the bull will determine his nutrient requirements during the 9 months following the breeding season. Bulls should be kept away from cows in an isolated facility or pasture after the breeding season. In the winter months, provide cover from extreme weather that may cause frostbite to the scrotum resulting in decreased fertility.

coat color & Polled/Horned GenotypingSimmental, Simmental Hybrid, Gelbvieh, and Gelbvieh Balancer bulls have been genotyped for coat color. Homozygous black bulls are designated as such. Bulls not designated as homozygous black can be assumed to carry a red gene. Bulls genotyped to be homozygous polled have their genotypes published as such.
eId number Each bull has been tagged with an electronic RFID tag. The electronic identification number is provided in the catalog.
Genetic condition GenotypingAll bulls are guaranteed to be free of the causative mutation for the genetic conditions Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AMF), Neuropathic Hydrocephaly (NHF), and Contractural Arachnodactyly (CAF). Bulls with the potential to be carriers of any of these mutations (based on ancestral information) were identified, and subsequently DNA genotyped to confirm they are free of the causative mutations (any bull tested has genotype result in catalog for confirmation). Based on pedigree risk, bulls have also been genotyped for the genetic condition Developmental Duplication (DD). DD is an abnormality that has been observed in Angus cattle, and was recently found to be a simply inherited recessive genetic condition. Animals with two copies of the mutation (inherited from sire and dam) can sometimes be born with an extra limb or part of an extra limb. However, not all animals who are homozygous recessive will express the condition. Research is ongoing to better understand DD. Genotypes are presented in catalog- DD free (DDF) or DD carrier (DDC).
Genomically enhanced ePdsSeveral bulls have had their EPDs enhanced through the use of genomics (DNA markers, molecular breeding values). Genomic results are incorporated into the computation of the EPDs for several traits, resulting in enhanced EPDs and accuracy values. Bulls which have genomically enhanced EPDs are denoted with the HD 50K logo in the catalog.

Performance Livestock and Feed Company Supports Bull Purchase At Southwest Bull Test
Performance Livestock and Feed Company of Lawsonville, NC is a family owned company. Performance Feeds was the supplier of the concentrate supplement fed in conjunction with silage at the Southwest Bull Test this year.
Along with the selling feed, Performance Livestock and Feed Company is also in the cattle business. Since they are involved in several aspects of the cattle industry they realize the importance of superior genetics. If all producers utilized proven genetics in their herds, it would improve the overall quality of the product and be beneficial to all aspects of the industry.
With this thought in mind, Performance Livestock and Feed Company is sponsoring a $2000 credit towards the purchase of a bull for one Southwest Virginia beef cattle producer. This credit is applicable may be applied toward the purchase of any bull selling in this year’s Virginia BCIA Southwest Virginia Bull Test Sale. Eligible producers must own at least 20 cows, and must not have purchased a performance tested bull from a Virginia BCIA bull test sale (Culpeper or Southwest station) in the past ten years. Producers are to be nominated by their county Virginia Cooperative Extension agent. The producer will be expected to use the bull for three years, at which time the producer has the option to purchase the bull at salvage value or sell the bull, with the proceeds going to the Virginia Cattlemen’s Foundation to support scholarships, leadership development, and other industry activities.
For more information on this program contact the Virginia BCIA office or your local Extension agent.

The warranties and guarantees set forth in the “Terms and Conditions” are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied, and the remedies provided therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer, or any party claiming through buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee therein provided, and all other obligations or liabilities.
BIddING: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. The person in charge will settle any disputes as to bids and his decision on such matters shall be final.

PUrcHASEr’S rISKS: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to purchaser until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner.
rEGISTrATION cErTIFIcATES: A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the purchaser for each animal within 45 days following date of sale or receipt of full payment.

ANNOUNcEMENTS: Any changes from information of any kind in this sale book will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence.
BULL GUArANTEE: All bulls sold are guaranteed, via written contract between BCIA and the seller, to be breeders. Guarantee will be applicable to bulls which prove to be infertile, have structural soundness problems (including foot soundness), or
have other issues which apply under a good-faith guarantee. Any bull that settles a reasonable number of healthy cows shall be considered a breeder. This guarantee is contingent upon the buyer providing proper management prior to, during, and after the breeding season. Proper management shall include appropriate nutrition, breeding management (bull to female ratio appropriate for bull’s age, not commingling yearling bulls with mature bulls in same breeding pastures, proper observation of bulls during breeding season, etc.), and animal health care.
cLAIMS FOr rEFUNd Or AdJUSTMENT: All claims for refund or adjustment in the event the bull is a non-breeder due to infertility or unsoundness must be made in writing by end of first breeding season but not later than 12 months following the sale. It shall be the responsibility of the buyer to prove the animal is a non-breeder. A veterinarian’s report on the causation of the bull being a non-breeder is required. If the bull proves to be a non-breeder, the seller shall be entitled to provide the buyer one of the following: a) full refund for the purchase price, b) replace the bull with another of equal value, or c) issue credit to the buyer redeemable at a future BCIA bull sale. The seller shall be entitled to any salvage value.
rIGHTS ANd OBLIGATIONS: The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction.
All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. Neither Virginia BCIA, the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, the Bull Test Station or its management, nor any other person connected with the management of the sale, assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.
