What is Executive?

Policy Governance

In Policy Governance the Board (Conference Executive) is responsible for the whole organization but accomplishes this in two, distinct ways.

It creates a clear division of labour between the Board and the Executive Director (Executive Secretary).

The Conference Executive decides upon the “Ends”, the goals to be achieved

It empowers the Executive Director to focuses on the “Means”, how we will accomplish our goals, but within clear limitations

Role of Executive

In the Policy Governance approach, the three major tasks of the board are:

1. Listening to the people (owners) 2. Developing policies3. Monitoring implementation of policies

What good, for whom, at what cost?

Ends describe what we would like the Conference to look like because of the work that it does

Limitations

What do we not want?

Limitations restrict what actions can be taken by the Executive Secretary and management

Policy DevelopmentThe process of clearly defining Ends can be quite

challenging, especially when keeping in mind our priorities for limited resources

Policies are reviewed and updated regularly to ensure they represent the current goals and priorities of the church

The BC Executive is currently working on a new version of the Ends document which will be clearer and easier to understand

The Executive plans to meet four times in the coming year to finish this work soon

Conclusion
