Safety Precautions

1 Overview

This section covers safety precautions to take when you install and maintain Huawei network equipment.

Caution:

Before any operation, read the operation instructions and precautions to prevent accidents. The Caution, Attention, Warning, and Danger in manuals are merely supplements to basic safety precautions. Before installing and maintaining Huawei products, you have to:

Be familiar with basic knowledge of safe operation Undergo relevant training Get qualified for related operations.

Abide by local safety regulations. The safety precautions in this manual only serve as supplements to these regulations.

Take the precautions and follow specific safety instructions to operate Huawei products and equipment. Huawei is not liable for any damages caused by violating:

The people to install and maintain Huawei products need:

1.1 Symbols

The symbols in this manual, such as the warning symbols in Table 1, indicate the safety precautions to take during installation and maintenance.

Safety prompts fall into four levels: Danger, Warning, Attention, and Caution.

It stresses factors that may result in casualties, injuries, or equipment damage.

2 Toxic Articles

2.1 Beryllium Oxide

Warning:

Some equipment parts contain toxic beryllium oxide. These parts include the power amplifier circuit and combiner circuit.

The beryllium oxide in some parts injures human body only when the parts are damaged. The people to contact or handle the parts should be aware of the danger and take precautions.

Place these parts in a safe place to prevent beryllium oxide leakage from mechanical damages.

Do not discard the parts containing beryllium at random. Follow local regulations to perform chemical treatment or special waste treatment on them.

2.2 Hydrochloride

Warning:

Some equipment parts contain hydrochloride. The burning of these parts generates toxic gas.

Prevent such parts from burning.

Do not discard the parts at random. Follow local regulations to perform chemical treatment or special waste treatment on them.

2.3 Hydrofluoride

Warning:

Some equipment parts contain hydrofluoride. The burning of these parts generates toxic gas.

Prevent such parts from burning.

Do not discard the parts at random. Follow local regulations to perform chemical treatment or special waste treatment on them.

3 Electrical Safety

3.1 High Voltage

Danger:

High voltage power supply provides electricity for equipment operation. Direct contact or indirect contact thru damp objects with high-voltage wires or mains supply may be fatal.

Follow local safety regulations to install AC power supply equipment. The people engaged in AC power supply must be qualified for high-voltage and AC operations.

Remove electrical conductors such as watch, bracelets, and rings before operation.

When detecting that the cabinet is wet, switch off power supply at once. Keep the equipment dry in humid places.

Warning:

Improper high-voltage operations may result in fire and electric shocks. Follow local codes to lay AC cables. Have high-voltage operators trained and qualified.

3.2 Power Cable

Caution:

Never install or remove electrified power cables. Electric spark or arc may result from contact of power cable with conductors, causing fires or eye injury.

Be sure to turn off power before installing and removing power cables. Before connecting cables, make sure that the cables and cable tags are correct.

3.3 Fuse

Caution:

Never install or remove electrified fuses.

Only technicians qualified for high-voltage operations can install or remove fuses.

Be sure to switch off power before replacing AC fuses.

3.4 Tools

Warning:

High-voltage and AC operations call for special tools instead of general-purpose or makeshift tools.

3.5 Drilling Holes

Warning:

Do not drill on the cabinet at will. Improper drilling may damage cables inside the cabinet. The metal filings resulting from the drilling may fall into the cabinet and short-circuit the circuit board.

Wear insulated gloves and move away the cables inside the cabinet.

Protect your eyes from flying metal filings. Prevent metal filings from falling into the cabinet. Drill at proper places to avoid affecting the electromagnetic shielding

performance of the cabinet. After drilling, remove all the metal filings at once.

3.6 Thunderstorm

Danger:

Never work on high-voltage and AC or work on steel towers and masts in thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms generate powerful electromagnetic fields in air. Ground the equipment properly to avoid thunder stroke.

3.7 Static Electricity

Caution:

Static electricity generated on human body may damage the electrostatic-sensitive parts on the circuit board, such as large-scale integrated circuit (IC).

In dry climate, the electrostatic charge carried by the human body may be up to 30 kV. The charge may remain on the human body for rather a long period. When an operator with electrostatic charge contacts a part, the electric discharge may damage the part.

Before contacting any equipment, hand-held plug-in boards, circuit boards or IC chips, put on an anti-static wrist strap with one end well grounded to protect sensitive parts from static electricity on your body.

Before touching any board or module, discharge the static electricity in your body by wearing an anti-static wrist strap.

Add a resistance over 1M between the strap and the grounding point to protect yourself from electric shock. The resistance over 1M is reliable in terms of electrostatic voltage discharging. Check the anti-static wrist strap regularly. Never replace the cable of the anti-static wrist strap with other cables.

Prevent electrostatic-sensitive boards or modules from touching the object with static electricity or the object that may easily generate static electricity. For

example, when rubbing on an object of insulating materials such as packing and conveyer, an electrostatic-sensitive part takes electric charge. When touching a human body or connect to the ground, the discharge may damage the part.

Electrostatic-sensitive boards or modules can only contact good conductors, such as anti-static packing bags. Pack the board with an anti-static bag for stock or transport.

Before connecting any measurement device to boards or modules, ground it to discharge its static electricity.

Do not place boards or modules near strong DC magnetic field, for example, the cathode ray tube of a scope. Keep the distance at 10 cm at least.

The damage caused by static electricity is accumulative in effect. If the damage is slight, the part does not fail. However, as the damage occurs repeatedly, the part may suddenly fail. The electrostatic discharging damage on the part may be explicit or implicit. The implicit damage is not visible. However, it makes the part vulnerable to over-voltage and high-temperature.

Figure 1 shows how to wear an anti-static wrist strap.

3.8 Labels on Power Supply Cables

Attention:

Before connecting the cables, check the labels on them.

3.9 Leakage Current

Warning:

To avoid large leakage current, ground the equipment before powering it on.

Before connecting the AC input power supply, be sure to connect the protection-grounding terminal of the equipment housing with the earth. The purpose is to avoid the electric shock on human body resulting from leakage current. The leakage current is caused by the EMI filter earth capacitance of the equipment AC power supply input terminal and the Y capacitance of the primary power supply.

3.10 Flammable Air

Danger:

Do not place the equipment in an environment with flammable, explosive air or smog. Never operate any digital equipment in this environment.

It is extremely dangerous to operate any digital equipment in this environment.

4 Microwave and Magnetic Field

4.1 Introduction

Antennas in service generate electromagnetic radiation. Standing too close to the antenna is against the safety codes.

Only trained professional people can install and maintain antennas.

The radiation design of the equipment should meet the IEEE C95.1-1991 recommendation.

When working near a full-power transmitting antenna, keep the following safety regulations in mind.

4.2 Definitions of Environment

There are two kinds of environment under electromagnet radiation.

Controlled environment

In such an area, people are aware of the potential danger of the radio frequency radiation.

Uncontrolled environment

In such an area, people are not aware of the potential danger of the radio frequency radiation. They are not able to evade the radiation. The area may include living or working places.

4.3 Minimal Distance Formula

This section shows how to calculate the minimal safety distance.

Use the following formula to calculate the minimal safety distance from various antennas.

The elements in the formula include:

Rmin is the minimal safety distance. Its unit is meter. N is the number of frequency carriers. Pout is the output power of the frequency carrier. Its unit is W. L is the loss from transmitting party to the receiving party. Its unit is dB. G is the antenna gain. Its unit is dB. W is the greatest field power density permitted. Its unit is W/m2.

In the uncontrolled environment, the greatest field power density permitted is f/150, in which f is the frequency, whose unit is MHz. Its tested value is the mean value measured when the testing time is over 30 minutes.

In the controlled environment, the greatest filed power density permitted is f/30, and its tested value is the mean value measured when the testing time is over 6 minutes.

Table 2 shows the minimal safety distance on the axial line of the antenna field calculated by the above formula.

4.4 Operation Codes

Warning:

When operating on the high intensity radio frequency signal equipment, mind that the high-intensity microwave is harmful to human health.

5 Laser

Warning:

The laser beam inside optical fibers may injure your eyes.

When installing and maintaining optical fibers, keep your eyes away from them and avoid looking at the optical fiber outlet.

6 High Temperature

Warning:

The temperature of some equipment parts may be rather high. Do not touch the surface freely risking scald.

When the equipment is running in the tropical environment, the temperature benchmark of the parts is 45ÿC. In that case:

The temperature rise is within 30ÿC or namely the highest temperature is 75ÿC when the equipment is running normally.

The temperature rise is within 55ÿC or namely the highest temperature is 100ÿC when a fault occurs.

The temperature for radiator of the transmitter RF power amplifier and the power supply radiator can reach above-mentioned high temperature.

7 Working High above the Ground

7.1 General Operation

Warning:

When working high above the ground, beware of falling objects.

Follow local regulations on working high above the ground:

Have the workers trained. Take care of the machines and tools at hand and prevent them from falling. Put a tool back into the tool bag right after using it. Put on a helmet and safety belt. Put on cold-proof clothes in cold areas beforehand. Check all the hoisting gears beforehand.

7.2 Safety Codes on Ladder Use

Check the ladder beforehand to make sure the ladder is safe for use. Overweight on the ladder is strictly prohibited.

You need have the ladder held or secured in the following cases:

If the ladder slants over 5 m horizontally, if the two legs of it are over 3 m away, or if the environment is dangerous.

Be sure to spread A-shape ladders fully, as shown in Figure 2.

The slant of the ladder is 75ÿ at best.

Measure the slant with the Angle Square or with arms, as shown in Figure 3.

When using the ladder, place the wider end of the ladder against the ground or take protective measures on the base part of the ladder against skid.

Place the ladder against a stable and level ground. Never place a ladder on slippery objects such as cartons and stones.

When climbing the ladder,

Make sure that the gravity center of your body is within the ladder range. Keep both feet and at least one hand on the ladder. Do not climb beyond highest forth step.

To climb to a rooftop, the length of the ladder should be 1 meter higher than the eave, as shown in Figure 5.

8 Other Items

8.1 Weight Hoisting

Warning:

Exclude access to the areas under the gib arm and the goods in suspension during weight hoisting.

Comply with the following regulations:

Have weight-hoisting workers trained and qualified. Check that weight-hoisting tools are functional and complete.

Have weight-hoisting tools fixed securely onto a weight-bearing object or wall. Use concise commands to avoid misoperation. Make sure that the included angle of the cables for hoisting the cabinet is within

90ÿ to prevent the cable from breaking.

8.2 Heavy Object Portage

Warning:

When carrying the heavy object such as the cabinet, be prepared and mind not to be bruised by the heavy object.

To perform the following tasks, two or three persons need cooperate.

Installing and maintaining BTS cabinets Slanting, tilting, and erecting the cabinet

When the cabinet center of gravity slants over 10ÿ, the cabinet may be off balance under gravity.

Figure 7 shows how to lay or erect a cabinet.

8.3 Sharp Edge of Objects

Warning:

When handling equipment, wear protection gloves against sharp edges.

8.4 Binding of Signal Wires

Caution:

Bind signal wires separately at least 150 mm from the cables of strong current or high voltage.

8.5 Having Companions in Maintenance and Commissioning

Attention:

Have a qualified people who can give aids around when you maintain or commission the equipment interior.

Requirements

3.1 About This Chapter

This chapter describes the operating environment requirements of BBU3806 as follows:

3.2 BBU3806 Site Requirements

To ensure the long-term and stable operation of NodeB equipment, you have to select a proper site for the equipment room by taking the following aspects into full consideration:

Network planning Technical specifications Hydrology Geology Transportation

Specifically, you must keep the equipment room away from the following places:

Places with high temperature, low pressure, dense dust, poisonous gases, flammable objects, or explosives

Places with violent shakes and intense noise Electric substation Low lying land subject to soak Places where fungi grow easily Places where rodents such as rats haunt With the dimensioning of 42 mm (H), 430 mm (W), and 300 m (D), BBU3806 is

no heavier than 3 kg. It is necessary for the installation site to bear the weight of BBU3806 and have enough space for future operations and maintenance.

3.3 Power Supply Requirements

BBU3806 operates either at –48 V DC or at +24 V DC. It has to meet the following requirements:

When operating at –48 V DC, the working voltage of BBU3806 must be within –40 V DC to –60 V DC.

When operating at +24 V DC, the working voltage of BBU3806 must be within 19 V DC to 29 V DC.

The DC power distribution box or DC power cables have to be installed in position.

The through current of RRU upper-level protective parts must be greater than 5 A.

3.4 Lightning Protection and Grounding Requirements

3.4.1 Lightning Protection Requirements for Equipment Room Construction

To ensure sound lighting protection of the equipment room where BBU3806 is seated, you shall:

Construct the equipment room with reinforced concrete Equip the equipment room with facilities to protect the room from lightning surge Connect the lightning protection (such as lightning rod) ground of the equipment

room building shares a grounding conductor with that of the equipment room.

3.4.2 Lightning Protection Requirements for AC Power Supply System

To ensure sound lightning protection of the AC power supply system, you shall:

Use TN-S AC power supply system Equip a NodeB with a dedicated power transformer. Sheath power cables with

metal or insulation materials and lead the cables to NodeB through a steel pipe. Securely ground and bury both ends of the sheaths and pipes no shorter than 15 m underground.

Add a seamless zinc oxide lightning arrester to the lower voltage side of the NodeB AC power transformer. Ground the transformer shell, AC zero line of the lower voltage side, and metal sheath of power cables connected to the transformer shell.

3.4.3 Lightning Protection Requirements for Power Cables to Equipment Room

To ensure sound lightning protection of the power cables led into the equipment room, you shall:

Install lightning arresters on the power cables. Not lead aerial AC or DC power cables into or out of communications offices or

sites. Lead low-voltage power cables into the AC rectifier and AC power distribution

box in the equipment room. Add a lightning arrester operating at over 20 kA AC to the power cables. Ground the lightning arrester.

For sites in cities, the nominal discharge current of the lightning arrester shall be over 20 kA.

For sites in suburbs or areas with moderate annual thunderstorm days, the through-current capacity of the lightning arrester shall be over 40 kA.

For sites in mountains, areas where thunderstorms days are quite often, or solitary high buildings in cities, the maximum through-current capacity of the lightning arrester shall be over 100 kA.

The grounding cable of its lightning arrester must be shorter than 1 m.

3.4.4 Grounding Requirements for DC Power Distribution

The NodeB DC working ground (48V DC anode or 24V DC cathode) connects to the nearest point on the indoor grounding bar. The grounding cable must satisfy the maximum load of equipment.

3.4.5 Equipotential Grounding Requirements

Equipotential grounding has to meet the following requirements:

Make protection ground for all communications devices and supporting facilities such as NodeB, transmission devices, and power supply unit.

The protection ground of all devices in the site must connect to the same grounding bar. The protection ground of all devices in the equipment room must connect to the grounding bar of the equipment room.

The working ground and protection ground of all communications devices in the site must jointly connect to the same ground grid.

There are three ground grids for NodeB equipment room, the tower, and the transformer. Multi-point underground connections shall be made among the three ground grids. If the tower is on the rooftop of the equipment room and the power transformer is in the equipment room, the other two ground grids can share the ground grid of NodeB equipment room, as shown in Figure 3-1.

Ground the cabling rack, suspend iron rack, NodeB rack or frame, metal air duct, and metal doors and windows in the equipment room.

3.4.6 General Grounding Requirements

To meet general grounding requirements, you shall:

Never connect the neutral line of AC power cable to the protection ground of any exchange or communications devices.

Make all ground cables as short and straight as possible. Never add fuse or switch to ground cables. Make sure that there is no oxidation on the grounding bar against large contact

impedance between ground cables and grounding bar. Ensure that ground cables connect to the protection grounding bar of the

equipment room securely.

3.4.7 Grounding Impedance Requirements

The grounding impedance of NodeB cannot exceed 5 ohm. For places with less than 20 thunderstorm days in a year, the grounding impedance of NodeB can be lower than 10 ohm.

3.4.8 Lightning Rod Requirements

Make sure that all NodeB antennas stay under effective protection of the lightning rod.

The lightning rod must have a dedicated line for lightning current lead. The lightning rod shall be made of 40 mm × 4 mm galvanized flat steel.

3.4.9 Feeder Cabling and Grounding Requirements

To meet the requirements for feeder cabling and grounding, you shall:

Lead feeders into the equipment room through a cabling rack or underground burial.

Install grounding clips to feeders at the following points: Less than 1m off the platform on the tower Less than 1m from the outdoor cabling rack to the tower body Outside the feeder window One clip every 20 m on feeders along the tower. Use at most three clips

even if the tower is over 60 m high. One clip every 20 m on feeders on rooftop

After leading a feeder into the equipment room, add a coaxial lightning arrester with nominal discharge current no less than 5 kA to the feeder. The ground lead of the grounding terminal of the lightning arrester must connect to the grounding line, lightning protection band or ground grid outside the feeder inlet. The feeder lightning arrester must match the communications equipment in terms of impedance, attenuation, and working band.

Ground both ends of the cabling rack securely.

3.4.10 Signal Cable Lightning Protection Requirements

To ensure sound lighting protection for signal cables, you shall:

Lead underground signal cables rather than aerial signal cables to the NodeB site.

Lead metal-sheathed signal cables into or out of the site or pull them through metal pipes.

If underground signal cables cannot be led into the site, lead them through metal tubes. Ground both ends of the tubes securely. Install a large through-current capacity lightning arrester to the point where the cables are led into the site. Make the ground cable of the lightning arrester as short as possible. Ground the idle lines in the cable.

3.5 Equipment Room Requirements

The equipment room hosting BBU3806 must meet the following requirements:

Fire prevention Environment monitoring system

3.5.1 Floor Space Requirements

The equipment room floor space must meet the needs of:

Future capacity expansion Feeder window installation and feeder routing inside the equipment room Easy installation and maintenance Opening and closing of cabinet doors

3.5.2 Height Requirements

The desired height of the equipment room, that is, the distance from the beam or the ventilation pipe to the floor, shall be no less than 3 m. This makes it easy to install the cabling rack and route cables and feeder pipes.

3.5.3 Load Bearing Requirements

The load bearing capability of the equipment room depends on:

Ask an architectural engineer to verify the bearing capacity of the equipment room. If the capacity fails to satisfy the need, reinforce the building.

3.5.4 Floor Requirements

An antistatic floor inside the equipment room must meet the following needs:

The resistance of an antistatic raised floor must comply with the specifications for those in computer equipment rooms.

The floor is firm and tight, with a horizontal error no greater than 2 mm. If antistatic raised floor is not available, you can use a static-conductive floor with

volume resistivity from 1.0 × 107 to 1.0 × 1010 Ω. Be sure to connect the floor to the grounding device through a current-limiting

resistor and connecting cables. The resistance of the resistor shall be 1 MΩ. Tests show that a terrazzo floor or cement floor can reach this standard.

Be sure to cover all the cabling holes on the floor with cover plates. Make sure the holes are accurate in position and size for future installation ease.

3.5.5 Window and Door Requirements

The doors and windows of the equipment room must meet the following needs:

The minimum dimensioning of doors is 2 m (height) × 1 m (width). Be sure to seal doors and windows with anti-dust rubber strips. For windows exposed to sunshine, apply reflecting paper to the windowpane or

use colored glass. If the illumination inside the room permits, you may also block windows.

3.5.6 Roof and Wall Requirements

The roof and walls of the equipment room must meet the following needs:

Make sure that the roof and walls are of enough endurance, heat insulation, and leakage-proof capabilities.

Waterproof the antenna mast and cabling holes on the roof. Make sure that the roof is strong enough to bear the facilities.

You may paint walls with lusterless lacquer, but never with the paint that easily chalks.

3.5.7 Dust Density Requirements

Table 3-1 lists the dust density requirements in the equipment room.

3.5.8 Quakeproof Requirements

The required quakeproof intensity of the equipment room shall be one degree above the local standard.

Make sure that the equipment room meets the standard. If necessary, strengthen the building where the room is located.

3.5.9 Lighting and Illumination Requirements

The lighting and illumination of the equipment room must meet the following needs:

Avoid direct sunshine on the equipment room to prevent circuit boards and other elements from aging and deforming.

Install gentle and anti-explosion lamps in the battery compartment. For unattended NodeBs, use common illumination provided by the mains supply

for the equipment room. For large-capacity or crucial NodeBs, prepare an emergency lighting system with

DC power supply as standby illumination.

3.5.10 Fire Prevention Requirements

For fire protection purposes, comply with the following standards and practices:

The equipment room is at least 6 or 7 meters from any other construction. Keep flammable and explosive materials away from the equipment room. Fire-extinction facilities are available on the construction site. Smoke and

temperature sensors, if any, are functional. . Mark sockets at different voltages with distinct labels. Install safety covers on the reserved mounting holes in the floor.

You can prepare auto extinguishers to control or put out fire in case of an emergency. Besides, prepare portable extinguishers along the aisle outside the equipment room.

With the assumed fire lasting two hours, the water pool for fire extinction shall be large enough to hold water for extinguishing fire both outside and inside the room.

Place fire hydrants in the aisle or near the staircase where they are distinct and easily accessible. Do not place them inside the equipment room.

3.5.11 Environment Monitoring System Requirements

The environment monitoring system consists of:

Timing control Temperature monitoring Theft alarm Smoke alarm Standby power supply

The system monitors the environment temperature in real time. If the temperature exceeds the preset limits, the system will report alarm signals and turn on both air conditioners.

Theft alarm The system can monitor any possible theft in the equipment room in real time. It is advisable to use a dual-mode detector either infrared or microwave.

Smoke alarm The system monitors smoke and fire inside the equipment room in real time.

Control over the power supply and standby power supply

Automatic charge: When the battery monitoring circuit detects that the battery runs low, the system charges the battery automatically.

Charge protection: When the power supply is abnormal or the charging current is too large, the system protects the battery.

Discharge protection: The system cuts off battery load when the battery voltage decreases to an extent that might harm the service life of the battery.

Upon mains failure, NodeB switches to battery for power supply. When mains supply recovers, it can switch back to mains for power supply and charge the battery to fill the released electric energy.

4.4 Checking Installation Conditions

In conformance with Engineering Technical Specifications and Lightning Protection and Grounding Specifications for Communications Equipment, the project supervisor shall:

Check the construction conditions Fill out the Installation Environment Checklist Sign the Kickoff Agreement with the customer if all conditions are ready Formulate the Project Installation Plan.

If the installation preparations of the customer are not ready as required, fill out the Onsite Work Liaison Form and give the reason for delayed kickoff.

If the customer needs immediate kickoff, ask the customer to specify and promise the exact time when the installation is ready for kickoff. For the project that is unable to be improved or that does not meet the specified requirements, a memo has to be signed.

4.4.1 Site Construction Requirements

Check the installation site with respect to its floor space, height, load bearing capacity, and groove layout. If the site cannot satisfy these requirements, the customer has to reconstruct the site as required.

4.4.2 Environment Requirements

Check the environment as follows:

The lighting facilities inside the equipment room shall meet the requirements for equipment maintenance.

Routine lighting, safety lighting, and emergency lighting shall be all functional. Water supply and drainage systems are satisfactory and compliant with

specifications for fire protection. The air conditioning and ventilation system can ensure sound temperature and

humidity inside the equipment room. Effective antistatic measures are taken. Necessary fire facilities are prepared inside the equipment room. The equipment room is designed to endure specified earthquake amplitudes. Reliable lightning protection measures are taken for the equipment room.

4.4.3 Load Bearing Requirements for Floor and Wall

When installing the equipment inside a building, you shall invite an architectural engineer to check the load bearing capacity of the building from the following aspects:

Ask a construction engineer to verify the bearing capacity of the equipment room. If the capacity fails to satisfy the need, reinforce the building.

4.4.4 Power Supply Requirements for Equipment Room

4.4.5 Grounding Requirements

Satisfactory grounding is the basic requirement for stable operation of the equipment. It is also the primary precaution of the access network against lightning surge or interference. Carefully check the grounding aspect of the installation site and ensure satisfactory grounding according to actual requirements. For more details, refer to section 3.4 “Lightning Protection and Grounding Requirements”.

4.4.6 Auxiliary Devices Requirements

The auxiliary devices in this section refer to those that shall be ready for use before NodeB installation, including:

Cabling rack Transmission cables from the peer end Transmission devices at the peer end

If there are devices that cannot meet the requirements, it is advisable for the customer to make improvements or reinstall the devices as required.

4.5 Unpacking and Inspecting Operations

4.5.1 Unpacking Requirements

Caution:

To protect the equipment and find the cause, store the unpacked equipment inside the equipment room.

Take photos of the storage environment, the rusted or corroded devices, and the packaging cases and materials. Document the photos.

Take good care of the unpacked packaging cases and materials.

After the project begins, the project supervisor and the customer shall check the products from the following aspects:

The total number of products conforms to that in the packing list attached to the packing case.

The arrival place agrees with the installation site. The packing case is in good condition. The cabinet is not placed upside down.

Stop unpacking and find the cause, if:

The outer package is damaged or soaked. The equipment is soaked and becomes rusty.

Feed back this case to the local Huawei representative office.

Warning:

When transporting and moving the equipment, components or parts, Avoid possible collision with doors, walls, or shelves. Never touch the uncoated surface of equipment, parts, or components with sweat

soaked or dirty gloves.

4.5.2 Unpacking Wooden Case

Cartons are usually used to pack BBU3806s or terminal devices.

Warning:

When cutting the tape with a paper knife, you shall not cut it deep. Otherwise, the items inside the carton might be damaged.

After taking out all the items, keep the carton and antistatic packaging plastic bags for future use. For example, you may keep the standby parts or return the faulty parts for repair with the bags and cartons.

Unpack a carton by following the steps as illustrated in Figure 4-1.

1) Check the types and quantity of boards inside the carton according to labels. 2) Cut the tapes along the seams of the carton cover using a knife as illustrated in

(a) part of Figure 4-1. 3) Open the carton and take out the items.

You may set the DIP switch either before or after installing BBU3806. Setting before BBU3806 installation is recommended. Table 5-2 lists detailed setting of the DIP switch.

5.5 Installing BBU3806 to Standard 19-Inch Cabinet

BBU3806 can be seated in the following equipment;

5.5.1 Installation Space Requirements

When a single BBU3806 is installed inside a cabinet, it has to meet the following requirements:

The space available for the BBU3806 height must be no less than 1 U, that is, 44.45 mm.

The space available for the BBU3806 depth must be no less than 370 mm. As shown in Figure 5-2, the BBU3806 body covers 300 mm, and the cabling uses the rest 70 mm.

Layered installation may be applicable to multiple BBU3806s mounted in the same cabinet.

5.5.2 BBU3806 Horizontally Mounted into Cabinet

Follow the steps below to install BBU3806 into the standard 19-inch cabinet:

1) Hold BBU3806 and push it into the cabinet along the guide rails. 2) Fix the hangers of BBU3806 onto the frame with four M6 panel screws, as

shown in Figure 5-3. 3) The installation is complete.

5.5.3 BBU3806 Vertically Mounted into Cabinet

BBU3806 can be vertically installed into the cabinet.

1) Remove the two hangers mounted to BBU3806 at the factory.

Note:

Two hangers are mounted to both sides of the BBU3806 front, as shown in Figure 5-1.

Another two hangers are delivered with related accessories to support vertical installation of BBU3806.

2) Fasten the four hangers onto the BBU3806 with eight M6 pan head screws, as shown in Figure 5-4.

5.6 Mounting BBU3806 on Wall

5.6.1 Installation Space Requirements

When a single BBU3806 is installed on the wall, the available space shall be no smaller than 482.6 mm (width) x 370 mm (height).

When multiple BBU3806 are installed on the wall, the space between neighboring BBU3806s shall be no smaller than 50 mm. In this case, the preferable mode is side-by-side installation.

5.6.2 Installation Procedure

When no standard 19-inch cabinet is seated in the site, you may mount BBU3806 on the wall as follows:

1) Remove the two hangers mounted to BBU3806 at the factory.

Note:

Two hangers are mounted to both sides of the BBU3806 front, as shown in Figure 5-1.

Another two hangers are delivered with related accessories to support vertical installation of BBU3806.

2) Fasten the four hangers onto the BBU3806 with eight M6 pan head screws, as shown in Figure 5-4.

3) Place the BBU3806 against the wall, and then mark the wall-mounting positions of the four outer hangers with a pen.

Note:

You may also mark the wall-mounting positions, as shown in Figure 5-6.

6.4.3 Wiring Principles for Power Cable

Route the power cable by following the principles below:

Separate power cables from other types of cable. Never bind power cables with other types of cable in the same bundle.

When routing multiple power cables, bind them together. The bound power cables shall stay close and tidy with no twists or scratches. Place cable ties at even intervals and keep them at a proper degree of tightness.

The bending radius of the power cable shall be no smaller than 20 times that of its diameter.

Places where power cables are routed must meet the specifications specified in Engineering Design and Construction Drawings.

Prepare power cables that are long enough as required. If the power cable is not long enough, do no make any tie-in or solder joint.

6.5 Installing E1/T1 Cable

6.5.1 Introduction to E1/T1 Cable

The 3-meter-long E1/T1 cable transmits baseband signals between BBU and RNC.

E1/T1 cables cover the following types:

75-ohm E1 coaxial cable 120-ohm E1 twisted pair cable 100-ohm T1 twisted pair cable

The three types of E1/T1 cable have similar outline with the same connector at the X1 end and slightly ones at the other end.

Figure 6-3 shows the outline of the E1 cable. The T1 cable has a similar outline.

The connector type should be sure by need, it can be SMB female connector or BT43 connector. For more details, see Appendix B “Making Connectors of Communication Cables”. 6.5.2 Connecting E1/T1 Cable

The DB9 male connector connects to the E1/T1 port of BBU3806, and the SMB female connector to the peer end.

Connect the E1/T1 cable by following the principles below:

The TX end of the trunk cable from BBU3806 must connect to the RX end of the cable from the peer end.

The RX end of the trunk cable from BBU3806 must connect to the TX end of the cable from the peer end.

Connections between E1 cables from BBU3806 and its peer end depend on specific data configurations.

If the trunk cable from BBU3806 is coaxial at 75 ohm and the cable from the peer end of BBU3806 is a 120-ohm twisted pair one, you must connect the two types of cables through an adapter or a transit cable.

6.5.3 Wiring Principles for E1/T1 Cable

Route the E1/T1 cable by following the principles below:

Do not rout the E1/T1 cable overhead outside the equipment room. If the E1/T1 cable has to go outside the equipment room, route them

underground through a metal pipe. Ground both ends of the pipe securely. If the E1/T1 cable has to go outside the equipment room and fails to be routed

underground, you shall: Shield the cable through a metal tube. Ground both ends of the tube

securely. For the section of the cable led into the equipment room, connect it to the protection grounding bar for sound grounding.

Choose the cable with an outer metal layer. Ground both ends of the metal layer securely. For the section of the cable led into the equipment room, connect it to the protection grounding bar for sound grounding.

Ground the idle wire pairs of the E1/T1 cable inside the equipment room. For example, you may connect the idle core wires and shielding layer of the E1/T1 cable to a small metal plate, lead a grounding cable from the plate, and then connects it to the protection grounding bar inside the equipment room.

Do not cross the E1/T1 cable with the power cable, grounding cable, and feeder. When routing the E1/T1 cable in parallel with the above three types of cable,

keep it at least 30 mm away from any of the cables. Route the cable nicely and neatly, and secure it with cable ties. Make sure the radius of any bent is 20 times larger than the diameter of the

cable.

6.6 Installing Fiber

6.6.1 Introduction to Fiber

The fiber transmits high-speed CPRI signals between BBU and RRU.

There are four LC connectors with identifiers at both ends of the optical fiber numbered as 1a/2a, 1b/2b, 1c/2c, and 1d/2d, as shown in Figure 6-4.

6.6.2 Wiring Principles for Fiber

Route the fiber by following the principles below:

When unpacking fibers, you must check them with the packing list in terms of type, model, and quantity. Classify the fibers by installation position to facilitate future installation.

Before installation, check that there is no fold or impress on the fiber and that the connectors are intact. Otherwise, replace it with a good one.

Before installation, check that the connectors of the fiber are clean. Otherwise, clean the connectors with a piece of dust-free cotton cloth or a wiping box. For more details, see Appendix D “Cleaning Optical Fiber Connectors”.

During installation, do not pull the fiber too tense, jam on the fiber with height foot or any other object, or lay the fiber on sharp objects.

If one end of the fiber connects to an optical device, never look straight at the end face of the fiber connector. Otherwise, your eyesight might be affected.

When left unused, cover the connector with a protective cap. Make sure the radius of any bent is 20 times larger than the diameter of the

cable. Stuff the fiber inlet on the cabinet top with soft matters, for example, fireproof

cotton, to avoid possible damage to the fiber.

6.6.3 Installing Optical Module

Install the optical module before fiber installation as follows:

1) Hold the optical module at the side of the LC port. 2) Insert the module into an idle CPRI0, CPRI1 or CPRI2 port as shown in Figure 6-

1.

6.6.4 Connecting Fiber

Connect the optical fiber by following the principles below:

The TX end of the trunk cable from BBU3806 must connect to the RX end of the cable from the RRU3801C.

The RX end of the trunk cable from BBU3806 must connect to the TX end of the cable from the RRU3801C.

6.6.5 Wiring Principles for Fiber

Route the fiber by following the principles below:

Route the external fiber sheathed with a corrugated pipe along the specified cabling path.

Do not pull the fiber too tense, jam on the fiber with height foot or any other object, or lay the fiber on sharp objects.

Wind spare fibers around a special device, for example, a fiber coiler. When coiling the fibers, handle them with care to prevent damage. The bending radius of the fiber shall be no smaller than 20 times that of its

diameter.

6.7 Installing High-Speed CPRI Signal Cable

6.7.1 Introduction to High-Speed CPRI Signal Cable

The 3-meter-long signal cable transmits high-speed CPRI signals between BBU and RRU.

7.1 About This Chapter

This chapter describes the checkup work after the installation of BBU3806 as follows:

Check the result of each step to solve problems as early as possible. Never leave unsolved problems until project acceptance.

7.2 Checking BBU3806 Installation

12 The working ground, protecting ground of the NodeB, and the lightening protection ground of the building share one group of the grounding bodies.

7.4 Power-on Check

Caution:

Before powering on BBU3806, be sure to set the “POWER” switch of BBU3806 and the external power input switch to the “OFF” state. This ensures both equipment and human safety.

The “POWER” switch on the panel of BBU3806 controls the power input to BBU3806.

Check the power-on state of BBU3806 as follows:

1) Turn on the external power switch to check whether the external power supply falls within normal voltage range below.

When the power supply to BBU3806 is at –48 V DC, the voltage shall stay between –40 V DC to –60 V DC.

When the power supply to BBU3806 is at +24 V DC, the voltage shall stay between 19 V DC to 29 V DC.

If yes, go to step 2. If not, adjust the external power supply and then repeat step 1.

2) Set the “POWER” switch of BBU3806 to the “ON” state, and then check the state of the “RUN” indicator on the panel.

Normal: The “RUN” indicator flashes at 0.5 Hz. The power-on check succeeds. Others: Handle the corresponding case according to the description in Table 7-4.

Be sure to get the “RUN” indicator to flash normally at 0.5 Hz.

A.3.1 Cutting Cable

Cut the cable as follows:

1) Load the cable coils on a support. 2) Cut off a cable of the length required by the cable layout plan of the project

design, as shown in Figure A-2.

3) Cut the cable with a handsaw.

Note:

You may use a saw blade (0.8 mm teeth spacing) or a KT35 wire clipper, if available, for the cutting.

A.3.2 Mounting Heat Shrink Tube

A.3.3 Stripping

Caution:

When stripping a cable, check whether the core wires have been seriously oxidized or corroded. If so, cut off all damaged segment.

You may use special stripping tools, electrical knives, or the AM35 wire stripper if it is available.

For the JG OT terminal, the relation between the stripped length and the crimping length should comply with the formula:

L1 = L2 + (2 mm to 3 mm), where:

L1 is the stripped length. L2 is the effective crimping length of the JG terminal, as shown in Figure A-3.

1) Cut off the insulation layer of a proper length. 2) Remove forked core wires on the insulation layer at the end. 3) Strand core wires tightly in the original merging direction of the core wires.

1) Insert the core wires into the wire inlets of the terminal crimping tubing until you cannot push them any further. Note that the core wires are 2 mm to 3 mm longer than the terminal, as shown in Figure A-4.

2) Before crimping the wiring terminal, place the cable at the position for connection. Make sure that the O chip of the wiring terminal is parallel to the power supply cable. If they are not parallel, adjust the chip of the terminal using pliers.

3) During crimping, use the mold of the corresponding cross section. Figure A-5 shows the molds of the four types of power cable.

4) To ensure reliable electrical connection, crimp the terminals in the way as shown in Figure A-6.

A.3.5 Blowing Heat shrink Tube

Caution:

The heat shrink tube on the cable must wrap up the entire crimping sheath of the OT terminal including the joint between the terminal and the cable.

According to the cable design drawings, mount the heat shrink tube onto the joint between the terminal and the cable. Blow the tube using a heat gun until the tube shrinks and wraps up tightly, as shown in Figure A-7.

B.1 About This Appendix

This appendix describes how to make a connector of the communication cable as follows:

The method of making BT43 connector is the same with that of making SMB-type connector.

B.2 Making RJ45 Connector

B.2.1 Parts Required

RJ45 connectors and network cables are required.

B.2.2 Stripping and Cutting

Strip the cables by the specifications in Figure B-1 and Figure B-2.

Cables added with RJ45 connectors include round communication cables and flat telephone cables, as shown in Figure B-1 and Figure B-2. The stripped length on either cable is “L+ (2 – 3 mm)”. Figure B-4 shows the meaning of “L”. “2 – 3 mm” is the length reserved for wire cutting and flushing.

Caution:

When stripping the round communication cable and the flat telephone cable, make sure that the end of the sheath is neat and vertical to the axial.

Do not damage the shielding layer around a shielded cable when stripping the cable sheath. After the stripping, fold the shielding layer back by the root of the cable sheath as shown in Figure B-3.

Cut the core wires neatly, especially for the round communication cable. Spread the core wires evenly apart and cut them neatly with the cutting tool, as shown in Figure B-4.

The length of the truncated cable should comply with the requirements shown in Figure B-4. The core wires of the round communication cable or the flat telephone core wire is “L” in length.

B.2.3 Wire Insertion and Assembly

I. For 8-Core Flat Telephone Cable

Insert the 8-core flat telephone cable from the end of the RJ45 connector until the connector butts against the external protection layer of the cable. Insert each core wire along a trough of the RJ45 connector to the end, as shown in Figure B-5.

II. For Round Communication Cables

Insert round communication cables into the connector in the same way above. The core wire ends should be flush to make it easy to put them in position.

III. For Shielded Cables and Shielded Connector

Insert core wires of a shielded cable into the shielded RJ45 connector in the same way above. Make sure that the folded shielding layer contacts the built-in shielding piece at the tail of the RJ45 connector and butts against point A of the connector. See Figure B-5.

B.2.4 Crimping

After adding the RJ45 connector to the cable, crimp the connector using the RJ45 crimping pliers into a finished product as shown in Figure B-6.

Caution:

Place the RJ45 connector in a proper trough of the crimping pliers before crimping it.

Make sure that the connector is fully crimped. After the crimping, the metal blade should be lower than the top surface of the RJ45 connector.

When crimping a shielded RJ45 connector onto a shielded cable, make sure that the metal blade in the connector is crimped in position and that the built-in shielding piece of the connector securely contacts the shielding layer of the cable.

B.2.5 Checking

I. Outer Appearance Inspection

Reject any cable with visible defects, such as:

Breakage or crack on the connector shell Breakage or crack on the lock piece The cable not fully inserted

II. Wire Order Check

Reject any cable whose wire crimping fails to satisfy the design requirements.

III. Continuity Check

The continuity ratio should be 100% and the wires should not be short-circuited. Otherwise, the cable is a reject.

Caution:

For the shielded cable assembled with the shielded RJ45 connectors, check the continuity between the shielding shell of the connector and the shielding layer of the cable. Any cable without such continuity is a reject.

B.3 Making SMB-Type Connector

B.3.2 Stripping

Use a cable stripper to strip the cable sheath and inner insulating layer without any damage to the shielding layer and internal conductor. The end faces of the cable sheath and inner insulating layer should be flush and smooth. Figure B-8 shows the specific stripping dimensions (unit: mm).

B.3.3 Soldering Pins

Use the soldering tin with melting point above +125°C to solder the pins with the conductor inside the cable.

During the process, insert the cable conductor into the small central hole at the tail of the pin until the step at the pin tail contacts the inner insulating layer of the cable, as shown in Figure B-9.

Caution:

Do not scald the cable inner insulating layer. Prevent the soldering tin from flowing out to the exterior face of the pin. In the case

of outflow, clean it off lest it should affect next process.

B.3.4 Crimping External Conductor

Insert the knurled cylinder of the SMB connector between the inner insulating layer of the cable and the shielding layer so that the shielding layer evenly adheres to the knurled cylinder of the connector. Meanwhile, prop the boss of the pin against the inner insulating core of the connector, as shown in Figure B-10.

Push the crimping sleeve until it fully covers the shielding wires. Crimp the sleeve using the SMB crimping pliers.

Caution:

Before the crimping: Check the SMB connector before pre-crimping. Cut any shielding wires exposed outside the crimping sleeve in time using the

scissors. During the crimping, fit the SMB connector properly to the crimping mold in the crimping pliers.

B.3.5 Blowing Heat Shrink Tube

Place the heat shrink tube onto the joint of the crimping sleeve and the cable. Evenly blow in hot air by using the hot air gun until the heat shrink tube evenly shrinks. Refer to Figure B-11 below.

B.3.6 Checking

Check the following items after making connectors of communication cables:

I. Continuity Check

Use a multimeter to measure:

The continuity between the connector pin and the inner conductor of the coaxial cable

The continuity between the outer shell of the connector and the shielding layer of the coaxial cable

II. Insulation Test

Use a multimeter to measure if short circuit exists between the inner and external conductors.

III. Tensile Strength Test

Pull outward the inner pin with a proper force (about 60 N). There should be no visible movement of the inner pin.

IV. Outer Appearance Inspection

Check that no shielding wires are exposed and all the pins are in position.

C.2 Introduction to Labels

C.2.1 About Engineering Labels

Engineering labels apply to both ends of various cables to identify them. Labels on the cables ensure correct and orderly cable connections and facilitate maintenance.

Note:

To customize label description, you need state your requirements in the self-check report.

C.2.2 Material

The dividing lines on the label help specify the position of a cable. For example, there is one between the cabinet number and the frame number and another one between the frame number and the slot number. The dividing line is 1.5 mm × 0.6 mm in size with the color of PONTONE 656c (light blue).

The cut dotted line helps fold the label when you affix it to the cable. Its size is 1.0 mm × 2.0 mm.

There is a mark “TO:” (upside down in the figure) at the lower right corner of the label. The mark identifies the other end of the cable on which the label is affixed.

II. Label for Power Cables

Attach the labels for power cables to the ID plate on the cable ties bundling the cables. The ID plate has an embossment of 0.2 mm × 0.6 mm around (symmetric on both sides). The area in the middle is for affixing the label, as shown in Figure C-2 (unit: mm).

C.2.4 Printing Labels

You can print or write labels. Printing is advisable for high efficiency and eye-pleasant layout.

I. Template for Printing

The Word-form template is available for label printout:

Download the template from http://tech-support.huawei.com/asp/comm/index.asp (path: //support/technical document/project management/installation and maintenance/document/others).

Get the template from Huawei local office.

When using the template, you can directly modify the contents on the template. Be sure to observe the following rules:

Do not change the settings of centered characters, direction, and fonts. When there are too many characters to fill in, zoom out the characters, but make

sure that the printouts are clear and legible.

II. Cells Merging on the Template

The procedure is as follows:

1) Recover the table structure (if gridlines are displayed, you can start from Step 3) directly).

2) Click [Edit/Select All]. 3) Click [Format/Borders and Shading/Borders]. Select “Box” and click <OK>.

4) Select the cells to merge and click [Table/Merge Cells].

If two merged cells are still not large enough, use multiple lines.

III. Requirements for Printer

Use a laser printer to print labels.

Before printing a label, set up the page and try the printing on ordinary blank paper (both sides are blank):

1) Cover the blank paper onto the whole page of label paper. Check that the page setup conforms to the requirement.

2) Make sure the printer properties, such as "paper size" and “direction”, have been set correctly.

3) If the warning prompt as shown in Figure C-3 appears before printing, click <Ignore> to continue the printing.

If the printout conforms to the requirement, print it to label paper. If not, adjust the page setup and try the printing again until the printout is satisfactory.

Adjust the page setup as follows:

1) Click [File/Page Setup]. 2) Select the [Margins] tab page. 3) Select “Left” for [Gutter Position]. 4) Set [Header] and [Footer] as 0. Adjust the values of [Top], [Bottom], [Left], and

[Right].

When the page setup is correct, save it for future use. The page setup is only necessary for the first time you use the template to print the labels.

IV. Requirements for Feeding Printer

No matter what model of printer you are using, feed in paper pieces one after another by hand. Never use the auto-feed mode to avoid jamming the labels. The reason is that the label paper is different from the ordinary paper. It is composed of two pages and processed through many stages.

Different models of printers entail different feeding modes. Be sure to feed in the paper pieces correctly.

V. Requirements for Printed Labels

Make sure that the printed labels satisfy the following requirements:

All the printout is on the label. Nothing should be printed on the bottom page of the label.

Contents in the cells are aligned in the center. In a single-line printout, the dividing lines and the mark “TO:” are not covered by the printed characters.

Avoid overwriting the mark “TO:” with contents in merged cells or multiple-line printing. Use the space bar to move the contents to the next line.

C.2.5 Writing Labels

Use the black oiliness markers delivered together with the device to write the labels.

If have to, you may use black ball-pens instead. In that case, take care not to leave the oil on the label. Note that the oil contaminates the label and blurs the words.

Note:

The delivered marker has two nebs. Be sure to use the smaller neb to write the labels.

For easy recognition and good looking, write close to the standard typeface. Table C-1 shows the standard typeface.

C.2.6 Affixing Labels

After printing or writing the label, remove the labels from the bottom page. Affix them to signal cables or the ID plates of the power cables.

I. Affixing Label to Signal Cable

1) Decide where to affix the label.

Affix the label 20 mm from the connector on the signal cable. To avoid bending the cable or affecting other cables, you may affix the label at other positions.

For the vertical cable, affix the label with the text area to the right. For the horizontal cable, affix the label with the text area downward. Figure C-5 shows how to affix a label to a vertical signal cable. The method is similar for affixing a label to a horizontal cable except the cable is 90° clockwise.

2) Fold the narrow part of the label to the right, as shown in Figure C-5-a.

The length of the narrow part is designed for an external cable diameter of 2.6 mm. After this part has been stuck to the back of the label, it may not overlap the entire printed part.

3) Fold the printed part along the dotted line according to the directions shown in Figure C-5-b.

Figure C-5-c shows the finished label.

II. Affixing Label to Power Cable

Remove the label from the bottom page. Affix it to the rectangular flute on the ID plate on the cable tie. Be sure to affix the labels on the same side of the ID plates. Bind the cables with cable ties 20 mm from the connectors. You can change the position to suite actual needs.

Bind the cables with cable ties at both ends. After the bundling, the finished ID plate should be on top of the cable in horizontal cabling, or on the right side of the cable in vertical cabling. Make sure that the label is facing out, as shown in Figure C-6.

C.2.7 Information Carried on Labels

I. For Power Cables

Affix labels for power cables on one side of the ID plates. On the labels, there is information (the part after the mark “TO:”) about the location of the device at the other end of the cable, such as the location of the control cabinet, distribution box or power socket.

II. For Signal Cables

The two sides of the label affixed on the signal cable carry information about the location of the ports connected to both ends of the cable, as shown in Figure C-7.

The information is given like this:

Area 1 contains the location information of this end of the cable. Area 2 (with the mark "TO:") contains the location information of the other end of

the cable. Area 3 has been folded up inside the label.

Seen from the cabling end of the equipment, the text part of the label is on the right side of the cable. The side with “TO:” that is facing outside carries the location information of the opposite end. The other side carries the location information of the local end. In other words, the local information at one end is the opposite information at the other end.

C.2.8 Points for Attention

When printing/writing and affixing labels, keep the labels clean. Because the label paper is made of moisture-proof and waterproof material, do not

use ink-jet printers or ink pens to print or write labels. Affix labels neatly. Cable ties bundle power cables in the same position, with ID plates on the same

side. The positions of “up”, “down”, “right” or “left” are all based on the viewpoint of the

one working on the label.

II. Example of the Label

Be sure to affix labels in a correction direction. Make sure that the ID plates with the labels face outwards when bundling the cables with cable ties. Make sure that the text on the labels in a cabinet are in the same direction, as shown in Figure C-12.

On the load cabinet side, the label marked with “A01/B08--48V2” on the cable indicates that the cable is for -48V2 DC supply, which is from the 8th connector on the second row of -48V bus bar in the cabinet on Row A, and Column 1 in the equipment room.

Note:

In the power distribution box (or the first power cabinet of a row in the transmission equipment room), every terminal block on the -48V connector bar has a numeric identification. For example, in the above label of “A01/B08--48V2”, “08” (or sometimes “8”) is the numeric identification of the terminal block.

PGND and BGND are two copper bars. On each bar, the terminal blocks are short-circuited. Therefore, which terminal is connected makes no difference. You only need give the row number and column number of the power distribution box, instead of giving the specific serial number of the terminal block on the copper bar. For example, if the label on the load cabinet side is “A01-BGND”, it means that the power cable is a BGND that connects BGND copper bar in the power distribution box on Row A, Column 01 in the equipment room. The information on the labels for PGND cables is similar.

D.2.1 Introduction

Use special cleaning means to clean optical fiber connectors. Table D-1 lists the common means of cleaning for the optical fiber connectors.

Use microscope (an auxiliary means) to check the cleanness and attrition rate of the end face of an optical fiber connector. Be sure to check an end face only when there is no light in the fiber.

D.2.2 Selection

Select a cleaning means for an optical fiber connector depending on the transmission rate of the fiber, specifically:

Dust-free cloth and anhydrous alcohol are applicable to the fiber connectors that bear low-rate (2.5 Gbit/s or low) transmission.

Wiping paper, wiping boxes, and dust-free picks are applicable to the fiber connectors that bear high-rate (10 Gbit/s or wavelength division system) transmission.

Dust-free picks are applicable to the fiber connector that integrates an optical module with a flange on the front panel of a board.

D.3 Cleaning Requirements

The requirements for the cleaning of an optical fiber connector are as follows:

1) Clean the places around the optical fiber connector before cleaning the connector.

2) Insert the optical fiber connector immediately into the corresponding optical sub-board or flange after cleaning it lest the corresponding port on the sub-board or flange becomes dirty.

3) Do not touch the end face of the optical fiber connector after cleaning it. Cover it with a protective cap if it is not in use for the moment.

4) Clean the flange on the optical subboard and the optical port in the board only when:

The detected optical power performance of the subboard supporting optical power detection is greatly different from the actual measured optical power.

The subboard that does not support optical power detection reports alarms or the transmit optical power of the subboard is greatly different from the typical optical power even if the receive optical power is within its working range.

5) Examine the optical port surface using a fiber microscope. Make sure that the optical port is clean.

When the Raman amplifier applies to the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system, examine the surfaces of all optical ports before the input ports using a fiber microscope.

Examine the surfaces of all optical ports on the link of long-distance transmission (over 120 km) of WDM equipment and 10G MADM equipment.

D.4 Precautions

I. Fiber Protection

The protection requirements for optical fibers are as follows:

Never bend fibers smaller than 90°. Coil up extra fibers into a round or “8”. Never wind them around each other. Never apply more than 1 kg axial tension to a fiber. Never hang anything on only

a fiber. Never apply any impulse force to the axis of a fiber. Protect the optical fibers

from crush. Never place any optical fiber at 85 °C or higher.

II. Laser Safety

Never look at the exit of an optical fiber directly lest the laser injures eyes.

D.5 Cleaning Methods

D.5.1 Cleaning End Face of Optical Fiber Connector

Use the following cleaning means to clean the end face of an optical fiber connector.

I. Dust-Free Cloth and Anhydrous Alcohol

Caution:

Cut a piece of dust-free cloth into 32 smaller pieces of equal size. Put the pieces in a clean antistatic bag or a dust-proof box and seal the bag or box before the cleaning.

Keep your hands dry and clean. Use each piece of dust-free cloth only one time.

The cleaning methods include:

In general cases, use a piece of dust-free cloth directly to wipe the end face of an optical fiber connector, as shown in Figure D-3 and Figure D-4.

For dirt hard to clean, use a piece of dust-free cloth dipped in anhydrous alcohol to wipe the cylindrical surface 1 or 2 turns and then the end face. Dry the end face with another piece of dry dust-free cloth as soon as possible.

II. Wiping Box

The cleaning procedure is as follows:

1) Open the dust-proof cover of the wiping box.

Turn the handle on one side of the wiping box to open the dust-proof cover until the clean cloth is out, as shown in Figure D-5.

2) Clean the end face of an optical fiber connector.

Rub the optical fiber connector one time along one track on the clean cloth, as shown in Figure D-6.

3) Turn the optical fiber connector by 90° and rub it one time along the other track in the same direction, as shown in Figure D-7. One rub is enough for an MTRJ or MPO optical fiber connector.

D.5.2 Cleaning Adapter (Flange)

Use a dust-free pick to clean an adapter. The cleaning procedure is as follows:

1) Remove the protective cap on the adapter and put it in a specific cleaning toolbox.

2) Select a dust-free pick depending on the type of the adapter, for example, a Φ2.5 mm pick for an SC or FC adapter and a Φ1.25 mm pick for an LC adapter.

3) Dip the dust-free pick in the cleaning agent. Insert it into the adapter sleeve and then wipe around the sleeve.

4) Insert another dry dust-free pick of the same size into the adapter sleeve and wipe around the sleeve in the same direction.

5) Cover the protective cap.

D.5.3 Cleaning Optical Fiber Interface on Optical Module

The cleaning procedure is as follows:

1) Turn off the optical module. 2) Remove the protective cap on the optical fiber connector and put it in a specific

cleaning toolbox. 3) Select a dust-free pick depending on the type of the optical fiber connector, for

example, a Φ2.5 mm pick for an SC fiber connector and a Φ1.25 mm pick for an LC or MTRJ fiber connector.

4) Dip the dust-free pick in cleaning agent. Insert it into the optical fiber connector and wipe around the connector.
