This month at the Balmoral Early Learning Centre Now that it is September, after a very cold and very wet winter, the children are now able to play outside in the beautiful sunshine! “Treasure hunting” has been extremely popular, where the child hiding the treasure gets a small bag of gold coins and hides them all over the yard while the other children search the yard excitedly to find the hidden treasure. Outdoor easel painting was also another experience the children enjoyed out in the sunshine, many of the children painted for much longer while outside than they normally would inside, which proved interesting. September also means “Fathers Day” so over the past few weeks the children have been very busy and creative while making their beautiful Father’s Day cards for all the wonderful Dads out there! Over the next few weeks, all the children and staff at the Balmoral Early Learning Centre will be working on a beautiful wall display dedicated to the season “Spring” to add some colour, nature and happiness to our room! During the school holidays, I will be heavily working on your children’s portfolios so they can be displayed in the front foyer of the centre – ready for access by all parents and children! A friendly reminder to all parents as it is now spring, all children are required to wear sunscreen and a sun hat in accordance with our Sun smart policy. Please make sure your child has a named hat to wear outside each day. Also if you require your own brand of sunscreen for your child due to allergies, eczema etc; you are more than welcome to bring your own but please remember to sign it in! Healthy active living is a community culture and the team at the Balmoral Bush Nursing Centre love this. Please contact Tallie Talay for more information. Playgroup is a wonderful way of meeting new people and supporting young families. We also provide an opportunity to meet our nursing staff and have young children visit the clinic area so they are not scared or uncertain when they become ill. Kim Dufty our Clinical Nurse Coordinator demonstrates “teddy assessment” to our next generation of budding health professionals. Staff have recently completed annual fire safety training and attended an “all staff” meeting. The catering for the lunch was provided by the students of the Balmoral Community College. Abbey Hobbs and Febey McClure presented and served lunch very professionally. The food was amazing!!

Planned Activity Group After the rains and water everywhere it was a great time to check
out Wannon and Nigretta falls on our trip back from Hamilton.
Hamilton PAC Athol Guy The Seekers Story we were taken on a
musical & visual journey on the amazing success of Australia’s most
celebrated musical group The seekers.
Our planned trip to Casterton worked out that we missed the floods
of the rising Glenelg River. Lunch at the Albion Hotel was enjoyed by
all, great meal in the newly renovated hotel. Then it was on the bus
for a guided tour around Casterton, up to the famous race course
with views over the valley to Sandford. Our tour took us up to the
Mickle Look Out with magnificent views looking straight down the
main street. We travelled to Ess Lagoon which is a very popular
picnic and fishing area lots of other places of interest, back to the
information centre for a cuppa before heading back to Balmoral.
Special thank you to Heather for being our tour guide for the day,
Heather had a great knowledge of the area and make it all very
interesting.
After lunch on Monday 12th we all tried our hand at folding napkin’s,
under the guidance of Betty we folded into the centre and folded
again turning the napkin this way and that and come up with 6
different styles that we mastered. The table looked like a Christmas
party with red napkins folded and covering the table everywhere.
Men’s Shed members have been flat out keeping up with all the
outdoor seat orders, and other projects on the go. BBQ lunches on
the first Thursday of the month have been very popular with lots of
advice given on cooking the BBQ and laughter. Anyone is welcome
to come and enjoy lunch with the group and stay for the afternoon
to help out the more the merrier.
Plans for a 2 night stay in Maryborough have been completed and
we head off Monday 19th full report next month.

Have you joined the Walking
Challenge?? Why 10,000 Steps A Day?
The '10,000 steps' goal puts a focus on the accumulation of activity
across the whole day. With continual advances in technology and our
workplaces becoming more sedentary it now takes a concerted effort to make active choices.
It is sometimes easier to make these choices when you have a motivational tool such as a
pedometer reminding you how many or how little steps you have done for the day.
10,000 steps is the recommended daily step goal for a healthy adult. The following pedometer
indices have been developed to provide a guideline on how many steps are enough.
After lengthy delays due to website updates our walking challenge is finally up and going. We have 6 teams this year vying for the right to be crowned champions of the winter (spring) walking challenge and hold aloft the much sought after Golden Sneaker trophy. Harrow Bush Nursing Centre and Loren Linto Personal Training are the two new teams up for the challenge with both heavily recruiting in the off season. The Balmoral Community team have changed their name to give them more selling power……..and with a name like “Chicks, Hens & Tough Old Birds” I’m sure they’ll be a team not to be taken to lightly!! The challenge goes for a duration of 6 weeks kicks off on the 3rd October (first day of Term 4) and will finish on the 14th November. Although the program promotes the idea of 10,000 Steps in a day, the truth of the matter is that the ideal number of steps is based on your current activity levels and your overall health and fitness goals.
There is no magic to 10,000 steps. For people who normally do substantially fewer steps almost any increase in daily activity will pay off in the long term. For example if someone is doing only about three-thousand steps a day, an increase to six or seven-thousand daily steps would result in long term health benefits and a substantial weight loss if they are currently overweight.
Of course more activity is almost always better, but the idea of setting some small goals and using
the pedometer to guide you towards success is the real beauty of the instrument. It really does
make a difference to the activity levels. Parking a distance away from the entrance to the shops is
now an opportunity to acquire those steps - a far cry from the previous frustration of not parking
right at the front door.
If you are not part of a team and would love the opportunity please contact myself at the Balmoral
Bush Nursing Centre on 5570 1304 or alternately you can contact one of the other team
