Locally Owned and Operated......Celebrating Issue No. 107 May 31, 2015 What a beautiful day for the OPP Golden Helmets to come to Wasaga Beach! An OPP Motorcycle Training Ride came to The Beach from Orillia this morning and posed for this Beach BOOSTER photo. The ride was planned rain or shine, so the officers all enjoyed today's sunshine and a warm Wasaga Beach welcome! The 20-member team, comprised of OPP officers on regular patrol duties, take their machines through a series of complex patterns, which are intended to demonstrate the maneuverability of the machines and the riders’ skills. The motorcycles used by the Golden Helmets are Harley Davidson Police Specials. They have 1690 c.c. engines and weigh 800 pounds. Photo by Joe Bickerstaff, May 21, 2015 What A Beautiful Day To Come To Wasaga Beach! The Five Basic Motorcycle Waves Left-Handed Low Sometimes this wave is called the Harley or cruiser wave. These are typically used by cruiser-style or custom-chopped motorcycle riders. The arm is fully extended and aimed down towards the street in a 45 or lesser degree angle, with one, two, three, or five fingers extended. The direction of the palm is also critical to the look and feel of this wave. The palm must either face the other rider or face the road. A classic variation of the finger positioning is to throw a peace sign (duce) or a thumbs up. A low wave with an angle greater than 45 degrees and/or with the palm facing up or back and/or with the use of four fingers is telling the biker community at large that you are either new or inept. If you have a cruiser and can’t get this wave to work for you, then consider the Left-Handed Straight Out or trading in your bike. Left-Handed Straight Out This is an all-around general wave. They're typically used by crotch rockets, cruisers, customs, and bagger riders. The arm can be either fully or partially extended with no more than a 10 degree angle higher or lower than the shoulder. The palm must be facing the oncoming rider in either a horizontal or vertical position and a full palm must be shown. It is suggested that you present the hand in a relaxed state, as flattening it will make you look like a dork. The classic variations of the peace sign (duce) or thumbs up are also acceptable. If practiced, this is one of the easiest waves to master and will work with all bikes. If for some reason you can’t get this wave to work, you will probably have serious problems with the kickstand dynamic and should immediately sell your motorcycle before you cause yourself anymore embarrassment. Left-Handed High This is a variation of the typical wave seen made by kings and kids alike. It's used mostly by upright riders of crotch rockets and baggers. The elbow is kept even or slightly lower than shoulder height. The elbow should be bent at about a 75 – 85 degree angle with a slight forward angling of the forearm. The palm must be facing the oncoming rider and the hand can either remain still, though the use of a side to side motion is acceptable. This wave has Motorcycle Etiquette: How Not to Wave Like a Dork been proven very useful when you have a loose watchband. It is suggested you present the hand in a relaxed state, as, once again, flattening it will make you appear to be a dork. The classic variations of the peace sign (duce) or thumbs up are frowned upon when using this type of wave. It’s a bit too over-the-top. Important: Should you be riding a crotch rocket, it is extremely important to maintain the crotch rocket image by using this wave only if the left hand is coming from the left hip or thigh. This should never, ever be used when coming from the handlebars. Warning of possible injury: Do not use this type of wave on a cruiser. You will appear aloof, snobbish, and everyone will hate you. If you have a medical condition or feel you must use this type of wave, get a bagger or ride a crotch rocket only in the upright position and don’t be a dick about it. There are rules. Right-Handed This is also known as the "Ha, ha. I have cruise control" wave. It is occasionally used by bagger riders but more typically by Ultra Classic and Goldwing riders. They’re riding on rolling living room sofas. These big, comfy, and not really cool bikes are great for touring. This lack of coolness can cause a temporary condition known as “dickishness,” which can be instantly healed by passing a cruiser and giving the right hand wave. The general message being sent is "You might be on a cool bike but damn it, I’m comfy.” If the rider of the touring bike is a smoker, he will typically light up a cigarette or a cigar, just to drive the point home. Left-Handed Forward This wave is used solely by crotch rocket riders because, let’s face it, what the hell else can they do in that position? A flashed wave, it is almost imperceptible due to the speed of the wave and the bike. To execute this wave one must slightly raise the left hand from the grip, no more than three or four inches, show the palm, and return to the grip. This entire motion must be fluid and executed in under three seconds. You must learn all the intricacies of this wave before you take your first ride. If you don’t, they will know you’re a newbie and you’ll instantly become pink-slip bait. The only way to avoid this lame wave stigma is by doing something crazy like riding a wheelie while naked. If you don’t fall off, that’s a big plus. See More at http://thetimerider.hubpages.com/hub/MotorcycleEtiquetteHowNotToWaveLikeADork

What A Beautiful Day To Come To Wasaga Beach!

This spring the Wasaga Beach will be their very own Farmers Market. The goal is to showcase fresh, local and sustainable foods from the surrounding area sold by the producers themselves. It will also highlight crafts and wares from local artisans.

If you drive a motorcycle, you know about “the wave”. The wave is your rolling connection to your biker brother and sisterhood, but is there a special secret to this wave? When you started riding did you seek out a wave master and perhaps copy theirs, or did you develop one of your own? Have you ever wondered if your wave is appropriate? Unfortunately, wave training is not covered in the basic or advanced motorcycle safety classes.

Well, here I present the five basic motorcycle waves. Your worries about not knowing proper biker etiquette are over.

Many riders believe there that was once a secret wave society, similar to the Priere de Sion fraternal order, founded back in 1903 when the first Harley Davidson rolled out of the shed. There wasn't. It all started one day in 1904 when Arthur Davidson passed by William Harley and, since they knew each other, they waved. Another biker saw the two "Kings of Motorcycles" doing this and thought this was a biker necessity. A tradition was born.

The waving tradition continued on through the years but was always haphazard. There were bikers doing the “Bye Grandma Wave,” others doing the "Howdy Wave," and still others doing the extremely feminine “Princess Wave."

In 1946, after several years of these image-destroying gestures, a group of crusty old bikers decided to put some proper waving rules in place. They formed the Wave Hard And True Biker Society. Abbreviation: WHAT-BS.

Point of View

W e spend a lot of time in our vehi cles, whether it's going back and forth to work, carting the kids to various activities, or

embarking on a road trip. W i t h such busy lifestyles, cars hav e become our home on whe els; a place to eat, fix our hair , make calls, and catch up o n reading and paperwork. ( h o p e fu l ly n o t while driving!) This can take a toll on t h e inside of the vehicle, causing clutter to pile up and become an eyesore. Having a disorganized car n o t only prevents us from feeling comfortable and enjoying the ride, it can also be dangerous. I t ems rolling around in the vehicle can distract drivers and even cause injury in the event of a sudden stop o r crash. Here are some easy o r ganizing strategies and storage s o lutions to get your car clean and o r ganized:

1. Do a clean-out at the end of the day, removing garbage and any other items that don't belong in the car; this takes less than two minutes but done consistently, it's the easiest way to keep your car looking and smelling good.

2. Keep a tissue box full of trash bags in your car to make daily clean-ups quick and easy.

3. Keep wipes and dust cloths in the car and clean the steering wheel and dash whenever you find yourself waiting. (like when you're picking up the kids)

4. Place a small bin in your trunk or at the foot of the passenger seat to keep books, toys and papers contained. Collapsible bins provide a flexible storage solution, and a few pieces of Velcro on the bottom will secure the bin to the carpet so it doesn't slide around.

5. Visor organizers will keep CDs easily accessible.

6. Hooks that slide under the headrest can hold purses and bags.

7. Seat-back totes can carry everything from colouring books and crayons (remember they melt!) to maps and file folders.

8. Front-seat organizers and console units that fit between minivan or SUV seats are great for the travelling businessperson who wants convenient access to files and a flat surface to write on.

9. A small accordion wallet helps keep papers (receipts, directions, accident forms, etc.) neatly organized in the glove compartment. However, originals of vehicle ownership, registration and insurance papers should NOT be left in your car, keep photocopies there instead and store the originals in a safe place at home)

10. Always place heavy items in the trunk to prevent t h e m f r o m b e c o m i n g projectiles when you come to a sudden stop or get into an accident.

Being organized in the car is a safety issue, but it will also make you feel better about driving. It may even make your trips less stressful. Once you experience the benefits of a tidy car, it will give you the motivation to keep things in order. Easy and quick to make, this Welsh recipe is steeped in history It is generally believed that the pasty evolved for Cornish tin miners, who, unable to return to the surface at lunchtime had a hearty, easy to hold and eat, lunch dish. The pasty could be held by the thick pastry crust without contaminating the contents. The crust also acted as an insulator, keeping the contents warm for several hours. I like to eat these just the way they are either warm or cold like a sandwich, but they also make an excellent entree with mashed potatoes and gravy. The filling1 pound beef sirloin steak, diced3 cups potatoes, peeled and diced 3 green onions thinly sliced1 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon pepperDash nutmegThe Pastry4 cups all-purpose flour2 teaspoons saltPinch baking powder1 cup shortening2 tablespoons butter2/3 cup cold water1 egg, lightly beaten1 tablespoon heavy whipping creamDirectionsIn a large bowl, combine the beef, potatoes, onions and seasonings; set aside. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening and butter. Gradually add water, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball.Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Divide dough into 12 pieces; roll each into 6-in. circles. Moisten edges with water. Place about 1/2 cup filling on half of each circle. Fold other half over the filling; press edges together with a fork to seal.Cut several slits in each pastry. Place on a baking sheet. Combine egg and cream; brush over pastry tops. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° and bake 40-45 minutes longer or until golden brown. Easy Gravy Recipe4 tablespoons butter2 1/2 cups Beef broth4 tablespoons flour1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon pepperDirectionsMelt butter in pan over medium heat.Add flour, stirring constantly for 2 minutes, you want the mixture to turn light brown but not burn.Add broth, salt and pepper and continue to stir for 3 minutes, sauce should be getting thicker. If it gets too thick add a little more broth until it reaches a sauce consistency.Mashed Potatoes2 pounds of russet potatoes peeled and quartered2 tablespoons butter 1 cup cream 1/2 tsp salt or to taste 1/8 tsp pepperCook potatoes covered in salted water until tender. Drain and mash with a potato masher or blender. Beat in the cream, butter and salt and pepper and serve.

Wednesday, June 3rd is Tim Hortons Camp Day! Camp Day is the one day each year when every penny from coffee sales at Tim Hortons stores across Canada and the United States will be donated to the Tim Horton Children's Foundation.

On Camp Day, customers have the opportunity to buy a coffee and help send over 13,000 kids on the camping adventure of a lifetime. Campers aged nine to 12 years attend a 10 day summer camp session, or a seven day winter camp session, at one of the Foundation's six camps. All children who attend camp are selected by Tim Hortons store owners who work closely with local youth organizations and schools to identify kids who would most benefit from an experience at camp.

With the recent good weather we have seen an increase in cyclists sharing our roadways. Sadly many of these cyclists do not know the rules of the road as outlined in the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario (HTA) as they apply to them while riding their bicycle. Some of the most common errors could be the most dangerous these being:

Not stopping for Stop Signs and not check to see if it is clear before advancingNot obeying Traffic lightsRiding at night without the proper lighting requirements laid out in the HTAFailing to wear a CSA approved helmetFailing to ride with traffic or weaving from lane to lane to avoid trafficRiding, no hands, no helmet and texting (yes I have seen this one!)

Please remember that if you are the age of 16 or above, with or without a Drivers' Licence and riding a bicycle, many of the offences you would get demerit points for if driving a motor vehicle you would still receive them committing that offence riding a bicycle. For example Failing to stop at a Stop Sign on your bicycle would cost you $110 and 3 Demerit Points added to your Driving record and if you don't have a have a drivers' Licence the Ministry of Transportation with issue a Drivers' Licence number to keep track of your offences.

Under the HTA for safe and legal night riding which is anytime between one-half hour before sunset and one-half hour after sunrise you must have the following on your bicycle:White or Amber front lightRed light or ministry approved red reflectorWhite reflective tape on your front forks not less than 250 millimetres in length and 25 millimetres in widthRed reflective tape on your seat stays again not less than 250 millimetres in length and 25 millimetres in width

And yes you need a bell or horn on your bicycle, under section 75(5) of the HTA the fine for not having a properly working horn or bell on your bicycle is $110.

Next time on “On Duty” I will continue my discussion on bicycle/cycling offences.

Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Point of View

The Blues Festival held at Stonebridge Town Centre will be celebrating their fifth anniversary from September 18th to 20th. Headlining the event is “Canned Heat” an American blues/boogie rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1965. Two of their songs “Going Up the Country” and “On the Road Again” became international hits. “Going Up the Country” would go on to become the unofficial theme song of the Woodstock Festival as capture in Michael Wadleigh's 1970 documentary.Since its inception in 2011, the Blues Festival's attendance has gone from several hundred to several thousands. “Anticipating 10,000 people over the Saturday and Sunday and with the entire week ahead of the festival this amount may increase,” said Nancy Jarrell, Event Committee Chair of Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Blues.Jarrell is a five-year resident of Wasaga Beach and loves the Blues. She was involved with the “Southside Shuffle Blues & Jazz Festival” in Port Credit. This is her first year on the committee. “It gets into my blood – it's a root music, it's the base of so many types of music and applies to all ages drawing people from all over. It's open air and it's free.”2015 promises to be a pivotal year for the Blues where the town will be painted blue in schools on the street, in the restaurants and bars, on the main stage along with the well known Street Shuffle. “It's one of my favourites where you can shuffle from one type of entertainment to another interspaced with vendors,” said Jarrell.New to this year's event is the “Blues Film Festival” taking place at the RecPlex on Monday, September 14th this is a free admission showcasing Blues films gearing people up for a Blues week culminating to the live entertainment on the Saturday and Sunday. Back again is the Boogie Woogie Banquet with the Hog Town All-Stars with members of the Downchild Blues and Fathead on the Friday at the RecPlex. You can expect a lot of surprises according to Jarrell. Various venues in town will have bands performing and after parties – get ready for a lot of music Wasaga Beach! Most musicians are from the US and locally from Thornburry and to commemorate Collingwood an Elvis Tribute Artist.Chuck Jackson, Artistic Director, had a tremendous impact over the years. “I'm his biggest supporter and anyone who has met or worked with Chuck has only the highest regards for him. He is our momentum. He's got the expertise of 13-years of the Southside Shuffle behind him so he keeps us all on track and energized,” expressed Jarrell.Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Blues was honoured early in the year with the support of Celebrant Ontario Grant. “We are thrilled and thank you to the people that agreed to be our sponsors this year. We need the Town to adopt and embrace the festival so we can afford to bring in larger acts,” said Jarrell. For more information please visit wwww.wasagablues.com.

The eternal debate over bathroom conventions seems to have actually been answered more than a century ago.According to an 1891 patent by New York businessman Seth Wheeler, the end of a toilet paper roll should be on the outside, or in the “over” position. (Advocates of the “under” position, take note: better flip that roll over when you get home.)Wheeler, the man behind the Albany Perforated Wrapping Paper Company, is also the reason we’re able to tear off perfect squares in the first place: Albany Perforated originally patented the idea for perforated "wrapping" paper (a more modest name for toilet paper) in 1871."My invention ... consists in a roll of wrapping paper with perforations on the line of the division between one sheet and the next, so as to be easily torn apart, such roll of wrapping paper forming a new article of manufacture," Wheeler's 1871 patent read. Now that this has been resolved, everyone can move on to other pressing concerns: single-ply or double-ply?

Approx. 7,600. In Goderich Township, Huron County, on Lake Huron at the mouth of the Maitland River and Hwys 8 and 21, 100 km North of London. Samuel de Champlain was the first European visitor, in 1618, when the Indian settlement there was called Menesetung. The site was chosen by John Galt, founder of the Canada Company, as the terminus of the Huron Road, which he built from Guelph. Dr. William “Tiger” Dunlop supervised the building of the town in 1828, naming it after Viscount Goderich, chancellor of the exchequer when the British government sold the land to the Canada Company. A central park, where the courthouse is located, is a perfect octagon, and eight streets radiate out from the eight angles. With an uncharacteristic lack of tact, Queen Elizabeth II once called Goderich, which sits on a high bluff overlooking Lake Huron and the Maitland River Valley, “the prettiest town in Canada.” A plaque at Cobourg and Lighthouse Streets in Goderich recalls “The Great Storm of 1913.” The storm raged for three days in November; 244 lives were lost, and 19 vessels were destroyed. Lake Huron bore the brunt of the storm’s fury and extensive salvage operations were conducted along the length of the country’s shoreline.

She also hosted a dinner hour news show called First Local for the Simcoe County, Ontario public access Rogers Cable station. She was a commentator at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia for CTV along with Rod Black and Victor Kraatz during the Women's Figure Skating and Ice Dancing competitions. In October 2010, Robinson was elected to Barrie City Council, representing Ward 8 in the south-central area of the city. She resigned from her position on council in August 2012, citing personal health reasons.

Yes folks, we have come off a great May long weekend. The weather cooperated for the most part. We had a very successful event and our visitors were respectful and generated a good uptick in our local economy. Social media across our town was brimming with accolades. When it comes to transformational change, these kind of quick wins and win celebrations are what keep us going. Most people don’t realize that the change process starts with euphoria and great expectations and predominantly takes a turn for the worse as change translates into the minds of people of who lost and who won and what has to be given up before we climb out of the valley of loss to bigger and better results as we work towards the big prize, Wasaga Beach as the preferred place to be, living, working and playing here while celebrating our community. So let’s be mindful of our wins, let’s celebrate all of our accomplishments that come along and encourage all of our friends, neighbours and business owners that it’s the big prize that we are shooting for. We need to stop doing the things that waste our efforts. Start doing the things that add benefit to what we are trying to accomplish. Change the things we need to change based on what we are learning as we go through this transformation and continue doing the things that have worked in the past and will work for us in the future. If we take on this going forward approach we will work through our setbacks, combat the negative nellies and take advantage of all the good finds of opportunity that come along. After all, luck is when preparation meets with opportunity.Let’s all get involved in managing those moments of truths that create impressions in the minds of our visitors that will keep them coming back. They can be as simple as raking our front yards to make travel down our local roads neat and pleasant for people driving them as they discover our local treasures. Making that extra comment by just saying “my pleasure” when someone thanks you for a sale or a helpful hand. Just by asking “Can I help you?” or “Thank you for visiting Wasaga Beach” as a friendly gesture we can make our guests feel valued and appreciated. Just by picking up that one piece of litter and placing it in a bin you are making a statement that says my community is important to me and I want it to be important to you as well. “I’m just putting a little back”. All these small gestures add up to creating moments of truth that will get us through the change process and contribute towards making Wasaga Beach the preferred community in which to live, work and play.“Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at [email protected]. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work and play.Gary is president of Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, chairs the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival and lives and works in Wasaga Beach.

defined as “moderate consumption,” though this certainly isn’t the norm for college-aged folks. As you’re probably aware, excessive alcohol intake can lead to a whole heap of problems including alcoholism, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides (blood fats), obesity, stroke, heart Question: Is it beneficial to get my body fat percentage failure, and even some cancers. But here’s the good news. checked and, if so, what method provides the best result?Moderate alcohol consumption does have its health Answer: Whether or not you get your body fat checked benefits as well, though this list isn’t nearly as long. The depends on how meticulous you are when it comes to your potential benefits include a slight increase in HDL (good own health and wellness. Some people are perfectly cholesterol) and some anti-clotting properties as well, content to just workout and watch what happens. Others which may have an effect on heart attack and stroke risk. In want to track and analyze everything and, as a result, like to fact, several studies have linked alcohol to reduced have a starting point for body fat, amongst other things. If mortality from heart disease, though we can’t be sure that you’re in this latter group, then go ahead and get a test other lifestyle factors weren’t the primary cause. Bottom done. There are numerous ways to analyze your body fat line—only you can decide how much of a role alcohol plays percentage, from the very expensive to the ridiculously in your life. Just be responsible, drink moderately (if at all), inexpensive, and the very accurate to the incredibly and don’t drink and drive!inaccurate. Some of the best methods include getting a

DEXA scan, a Bod Pod measurement, or getting underwater weighed. However, these are the more expensive options, and require sophisticated equipment and skilled technicians. You could also try stepping on a Tanita scale, which uses something called bioelectrical impedance to determine your body fat percentage. Unfortunately, the accuracy is somewhat questionable with this method. When it comes to cost, accuracy, and practicality, you really can’t go wrong with a skinfold caliper test. It takes about 5 minutes, it might cost you $10-$50 (depending on whether a consultant is included or not), and it’s reasonably accurate. You just need to find a personal trainer, or other health professional, that has done hundreds or even thousands of tests. And remember, the initial number isn’t necessarily all that important anyway. You just need a starting point—then, as long as that number trends down over time, that’s all that really matters, right?Question: Being of college age, I’m curious about the latest guidelines when it comes to alcohol intake. Can you help me out with benefits (if there are some) and risks?Answer: Absolutely! If you decide to consume alcohol (and I assume you have since you’re asking the question), the current recommendations would be no more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women. This is
