The history of the X can be traced back to 200–300 AD. A ruin of a city built by Chand Sadagar has been found in the Baghmara Forest Block. During the Mughal period, the Mughal Kings leased the forests of the X to nearby residents. Many criminals took refuge in the X from the advancing armies of Emperor Akbar. Many have been known to be attacked by Tigers. Many of the buildings which were built by them later fell to hands of Portuguese pirates, salt smugglers and dacoits in the 17th century.

Teinopalpus imperialis is a rare species of swallowtail butterfly found from Nepal and north India east to north Vietnam.

For those less lepidopterically inclined, it shares its name with the title taken by Queen Victoria from 1 May 1876, and proclaimed at the Delhi Durbar of 1877, as well as a medal awarded by the British monarch between 1900 and 1947. Gandhi, awarded the medal for his contribution to ambulance services in South Africa, returned it in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

This organisation was founded in 1980.   The organization first caught the public's attention in the

summer of 1981 during what became known as the Silver Spring monkeys case, a widely publicized dispute about experiments conducted on 17 macaque monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The case lasted ten years, involved the only police raid on an animal laboratory in the United States, triggered an amendment in 1985 to that country's Animal Welfare Act, and established it as an internationally known organization.

Research of the Wageningen scientists have demonstrated that crops are able to grow quite well on Mars (just as in Martian) and moon soil simulant if organic matter is added to the soils. Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and copper are known to be present in the soils. If they are taken up in the parts of the crops that may be eaten, they can make the vegetables inedible for humans. "For radish, Y, rye and X we did a preliminary analysis and the results are very promising," says ecologist Wieger Wamelink.

The genus X was named in 1735 by Carl Linnaeus after the Greek god X, who could change his form at will, because they have such a wide variety of forms. Linnaeus's genus was formed by merging a number of genera previously published by Herman Boerhaave, although precisely which of Boerhaave's genera were included in Linnaeus's X varied with each of Linnaeus's publications.X is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes .In local tradition, the X flower represents change and hope.

17• X disease was caused by Y poisoning due to mining in Toyama

Prefecture. Prior to World War II, the Y mining, controlled by the Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., increased to satisfy the wartime demand. This subsequently increased the pollution of the Jinzū River and its tributaries. The river was used mainly for irrigation of rice fields, but also for drinking water, washing, fishing, and other uses by downstream populations. Due to the Y poisoning, the fish in the river started to die, and the rice irrigated with river water did not grow well. The heavy metals accumulated at the bottom of the river and in the water of the river. This water was then used to irrigate the rice fields.

• When the population complained about this pollution, the company thought it to be simply a regional disease or a type of bacterial infection. Only in 1955 did Dr. Hagino and his colleagues suspect Y as the cause of the disease.

• In Thailand it is believed that a X may contain the soul of a dead person, perhaps a Buddha. When one is taken the capturer is rewarded and the animal brought to the king to be kept ever afterwards. It cannot be bought or sold. It is baptized and fêted and mourned for like a human being at its death.

• In some parts of Indo-China the belief is that the soul of the X may injure people after death; it is therefore fêted by a whole village.

• In Cambodia it is held to bring luck to the kingdom. The cult of the X is also found in southern Ethiopia.

• In Surat, unmarried Anāvil girls participate in a holiday referred to as Alunām.

Page 48: Bazzinga Environment quiz prelims with answers

A parasitic nematode several feet long, European explorers named it for the X coast of West Africa in the 17th Century. It's the stuff of nightmares. Eggs in stagnant water are eaten by water fleas, which get swallowed by a human drinking water. They mature in the human's gut, then mate. The female burrows to the lower leg and emerges. The burning sensation drives the victim to put his or her legs in the water. The worm lays her eggs and the cycle is repeated. Fortunately, it's easily prevented with a simple drinking filter, and it's on track to be exterminated within the next decade.
