Start Now and Plan Ahead There is a wealth of information available

regarding scholarships but it takes time and persistence to research and complete the sometimes lengthy applications.

HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS each year go unclaimed as people simply do not apply for these bursaries and scholarships.

Definitions: Loan, Bursary, Scholarship

Loan - based on financial need and needs to be repaid (OSAP)

Bursary - based on financial need; does not need to be repaid

Scholarship - based on merit: academic and/or other merit

Bursaries & Grants – cont’d Bursaries and grants are not loans – they

are non-repayable monies given to students who demonstrate financial need.

OSAP gives student loans to students who demonstrate financial need. Apply at: https://osap.gov.on.ca

There will be an OSAP info session in the spring.

bursaries to students who demonstrate financial need.

Bursaries are based on the OSAP methodology – meaning that students who qualify for OSAP, but do not receive the full assessed need from OSAP may receive a bursary to make up the shortfall from the college or university they are attending.

Where do I begin? Universities & colleges offer entrance

scholarships – some you will be automatically considered for once you apply; others require an application

Ex: York Edith Schulich BBA/iBBA Entrance Award: $5 000 – no application required

York University President's Scholarship: $21 600 – no application required York Oscar Peterson Scholarship: $40 000 – application required

colleges, there are others, sponsored by various agencies, that will be posted regularly on the Scholarship Bulletin Board outside the Caf, announced on the P.A. system, Twitter @BayviewGuidance & emailed to you through Career Cruising

The Bayview website has a section titled Financing Your Education under the Guidance tab.

criteria: 1. Leadership and Academic.

2. College and Special Interest Groups Most of these scholarships require academic

excellence, school and community involvement and demonstrated leadership.

If you have the appropriate qualifications, you can usually apply directly.

NOMINATION BY THE SCHOOL, and therefore we encourage students to complete the scholarship info sheet provided by the school. See Guidance for an info sheet.

Some scholarships are for COLLEGE students exclusively.

What type of students are scholarship providers looking to reward?

In addition to academic success and financial need, scholarship providers look for applications who can demonstrate:

Originality and Passion – what makes you stand out from all the other applicants?

Volunteering – do you give back to the community? Have you volunteered beyond the 40 hour requirement?

Leadership & Initiative – are you a founding member or have you taken an active role in a club or organization?

Talent – Do you have a vision? Scholarships reward fresh thinking and new ideas

Special targeted areas – specific heritage or cultural background, gender, special needs, geography and more

Scholarship Info Sheet You are asked to complete & submit the

Scholarship Info Google Form by the end of OCTOBER.

Choose no more than FIVE to be nominated

Make sure you provide all the information requested.

This form will help us determine scholarship nominees and School Awards for Graduation.

Student Loans OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) You can apply for OSAP once you accept a

program (mid to late June) OSAP is only meant to supplement one’s

educational costs, not pay entirely Payments happen in two installments – 60% in

the Fall, 40% in the Winter

If you need letters of recommendation, ask for them a month in advance.
