From the Principal– Dr Michelle Kearney According to researchers, children whose parents are actively involved in their education are at an advantage. One of the most notable indicators of early involvement is higher academic achievement. Researchers have shown that parental involvement not only benefits children but it also benefits parents and the school. When the relationship between the school and family is trusting and collaborative there are benefits for all, but most importantly the student. Research on improving educational outcomes for students supports the cooperation of those who have the greatest influence on them, namely parents and teachers. There is unequivocal evidence that parental involvement makes a significant difference to educational achievement. When schools and parents are able to work together in constructive and meaningful ways much can be achieved. Over the last few weeks we have had a number of opportunities to strengthen and increase the opportunities for Bayview parents to connect with the school. I acknowledged last week the wonderful work of our parent volunteers who contribute so much of their time and talent. The Parents and Friends Association have met twice this term and are excitedly working on some amazing projects which they will inform us all about over the coming weeks and months. Some projects are aimed at building a stronger sense of community amongst the parent body through the development of a variety of events that will provide camaraderie, fun and entertainment. A number of proven fundraising activities will occur again along with some new ideas. A small group of parents attended the seminar last week with Paul Dillon on Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs. Paul worked with Year 11 and 12 students during the day and staff from Bayview and other schools in the afternoon. A significant moment in our history

At the end of this year, we celebrate 130 years of Institute presence and mission in Portland - the first foundation after Ballarat made by Gonzaga Barry in 1884.

This is indeed a significant moment in our history, made more so with Denise Desmarchelier moving from Portland in December, and so ending 130 years of our constant presence in that community.

The Province has very consciously maintained its presence in Portland until now. Over the last few years, with her typical dedication, Denise has worked with the College to strengthen its operations at both management and governance levels, and with a solid Council and effective processes now in place, this seems the time for us to move away with every confidence the College has the capacity it needs for the future.

We can be assured that Loreto will continue in Portland’s collective memory particularly in the minds and hearts of student families and parishioners; in the history and traditions of Loreto -Christian Community College-Bayview; in the names of two of the three Houses - Ward, Barry and MacKillop; and of course in the naming of ‘Nuns Beach’.

The Province will continue to hold responsibility related to the ownership and lease arrangement of the Bayview site and the underwriting of loans; the Constitution and membership of the Christian Community College Company Inc. and Bayview Board; and support offered by meetings of the Principal and Business Manager with their Loreto school colleagues.

The 130 years of IBVM presence in Portland will be celebrated on Sunday 3rd November 2013 with the Parish Mass, formalities and lunch at Bayview, and the blessing of the IBVM graves in the Portland cemetery. It is hoped that many Loreto Sisters will be able to attend, together with past and present parishioners, past and present students, staff and families of Loreto-Christian Community College-Bayview and All Saints Primary School.

This celebration of 130 years dedication of our sisters will surely bring to mind a host of wonderful women who lived and taught in Portland over that time – our cloud of witnesses both living and dead. We pray in gratitude for these women and all the blessings received.

Tayla Falconer and Laura Kelly represented The Hamden Netball League in the 15 and under team after being selected out of 45 to 50 girls. This is a fantastic achievement for these two girls who are new to the Hamden League after being involved with Western Border previously. The team won the tournament and now Tayla and Laura will compete in the Victorian William Loud Championship in Melbourne on Sunday June 23rd. We wish them well with their netball.

Emily Hernan, Candice Down and Grace Davey were selected to play in the 17 and under team for their region – The South West Netball League at the William Loud Netball tournament. They were coached by Mrs. Lindy Hernan who was very pleased with the girl’s efforts on the day.

Eilish Drought and Rachael Roberts represented The South West Netball league in the 15 and under side also at the William Loud tournament. They too were selected after attending trials and should be very proud of their achieve-ments on the day.

Eva Clark was selected for the Hamden Netball League 13 and under team while Paige Clayton was selected for the 13 and under South West Netball League side which played in Warrnambool at the William Loud Tournament. Eva’s team made it into the semi finals but unfortunately lost and missed out on playing in the grand final.

We welcome information from the Bayview Community on students competing in any sports in the community

Our Polo Crosse star shines! Tayla Falconer was selected to represent Victoria in the Junior (16 & Under) Mixed Competition at the Australian Junior Polo Crosse Classic in Albury over the Anzac Day weekend. Every State in Australia was competing as well as New Zealand and players from South Africa. Tayla played in the No. 1 (Goal Scoring) position and performed extremely well and was named as one of her team’s best players during the entire tournament. Her team won the Div. 3 Grand Final following convincing wins over Northern Territory, Tasmania, South Aus-tralia and Western Australian. Tayla has had a very successful Polo Crosse Season this year – winning the South Australian Championships (Open Div. 2) and also winning the Victorian Junior Development Tournament. She was also selected in a Victorian Team that played a Test Series against South Australia. She is currently a member of the Victorian Junior Development squad and is hoping to gain selection to compete at the Australian National Titles in Darwin in 2014. Later this year she has been invited to compete in Western Australia as part of the Junior Player exchange program.

Matsudo High School Homestay Once again, Bayview College is hosting 15 Japanese students from Matsudo High School from 21st July to 9th August this year. The students are going to stay for approximately 3 weeks.

Currently, we are short in host families. The benefits of hosting a Japanese student are valuable, with Bayview students gaining amazing time and experience. Hosting is particularly beneficial for Bayview students who are considering participating in future study tours to Japan. Students gain an insight into what it is like to be a part of a home-stay program and they often make friendships that can be rekindled when they visit Japan.

If you would like to find out more about hosting one of the students, please fill out the slip below and return to school as soon as possible. We will arrange a meeting on Wednesday 29th May to provide further detail and to answer any questions you may have. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
