BAYT COVID-19 Protocol Update – As of October 8, 2021

This update modifies earlier BAYT COVID-19 Protocols to address varying needs in our diverse kehillah given evolving public health considerations.

Many parents of school children ineligible for vaccinations told us they want their kids to attend BAYT. On the other hand, some fully vaccinated members remain vulnerable. Though complete consensus is not possible, we can all be extra considerate of one another regardless of our individual views. When we come together at BAYT, please follow our COVID-19 protocols, be honest regarding your vaccination status, and stay at home when in doubt. Please bring concerns to an Executive committee member, not our Gabboim.

Vaccination Policy

Province of Ontario proof of vaccine and passport requirements do not apply to houses of worship (although they do apply to catered events at BAYT). While some shuls have adopted mandatory vaccination policies, enforcement can be inconsistent and problematic. At this time, BAYT does not plan to adopt a mandatory, difficult to enforce vaccination policy. BAYT continues to prefer an honour-based approach among our members, as we did during the Yamim Noraim.

BAYT strongly encourages all age-eligible members to obtain two COVID-19 vaccine doses. We prefer age-eligible members who choose not to vaccinate to not attend BAYT. Unvaccinated persons who are not BAYT members or guests of a BAYT member may not attend BAYT.

We also remind the kehillah that Federal law requires unvaccinated persons (including children) entering or returning to Canada to quarantine for 14 days upon entry. Please do not attend BAYT (indoors or out) during a mandatory 14-day quarantine period if you are unvaccinated.

Youth Programs

Youth programs will move into the west wing classrooms on the ground level starting at 9:45 this Shabbat.

On October 16, BAYT Youth will roll out its Mom and Tots’ group for children who are too young to participate in regular Youth groups. This too will be held in the west wing classrooms. Also starting October 16, our Jr. Congregation minyan launches in the west wing classrooms.

The Young Families/Young Professionals minyan will continue in the Turk Family Beit Midrash for the foreseeable future, so parents will be nearby.

Please screen your child before bringing them to shul. Do not bring your children to shul if they are coughing, have a runny nose, a fever, or any other symptoms of illness. Rapid antigen testing is not required.

Children Over 10 May Attend Minyanim

Unvaccinated children aged 10 and up who are able to properly wear a mask may daven with their parents in the main shul minyan or the Young Families/Young Professionals Minyan. All children inside BAYT must be either in Youth programming or in a minyan with a parent.

School Exposures

Please do not attend BAYT if you or your children (1) were exposed to COVID-19 at school and have COVID-19 symptoms, (2) had a positive rapid antigen test, (3) are awaiting PCR test results after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, (4) were unmasked in a school or other location in a current COVID-19 outbreak or (5) were told to self-isolate at home by a public health authority.

Unless fully vaccinated, others in the household should not attend BAYT until the exposed person receives a negative COVID-19 PCR test (not a rapid antigen test) result, is cleared by a public health authority, or is diagnosed as not having COVID-19.

Other Exposures and “Close Contacts”

Please do not attend BAYT if you or a close contact tested positive (including a rapid antigen test) for or are awaiting a COVID PCR test result; have any symptoms of COVID-19; are unvaccinated and were outside of Canada within the past 14 days; or received a COVID Alert exposure notification on your cell phone in the past 14 days.

A “close contact” includes (1) someone with whom you have been within 2 metres for more than 10 minutes; (2) someone who lives in your household or provides care to you; (3) someone with whom you have had close physical contact including a handshake; or (4) someone who accidently coughed, sneezed or spit on you while talking with you.

Please do not attend BAYT indoors or out if you were unmasked and in close contact with others at a location you know or suspect has a current COVID-19 outbreak, even if the outbreak has not been reported to public health authorities.

Masks and/or Face Coverings Required Indoors

Ontario law requires everyone over the age of 5 to wear a face covering such as a non-medical mask while attending an indoor religious service. A plastic face shield or mouth/nose covering alone does not replace a face covering. BAYT does not have a medical exemption to this requirement.

Seating

In the Main Shul, please sit only in seats marked with green tape on the seat back according to the number of people in your group. The green tape allows us to satisfy Ontario capacity limitation requirements. Please do not move chairs or the mechitzah around in other minyanim.

Kiddush

BAYT will hold congregational kiddush after Main Shul davening concludes. Unvaccinated individuals, including children who attend the main shul minyan with a parent, should not attend this kiddush if held indoors.

The Young Families/Young Professionals minyan will also hold kiddush. Unvaccinated persons, children in particular, may attend this kiddush.

Removal of Chuppah Garden Tent – November 8

The rental company requires the tent be taken down by November 8. We will announce our daily and Shabbat minyan schedules as soon as they are finalized. We anticipate that the 8:25 Shabbat Chuppah Garden minyan will become a fully vaccinated only minyan when it moves indoors.

President’s Message Abraham (still Abram), his children, and the people acquired in Haran arrived at Shechem, the place Hashem first promised the Land of Israel to the Jewish people. Seemingly out numbered and outsized, Abraham built an alter and prayed that his children should prevail in battle against the Canaanites. Abraham brought our ancestors together as a covenantal community for the first time at Shechem. And the people knew the inevitable consequence of not coming together.

From Shechem, Abraham led the people to the mountains between Beit El and Ai where again he built an alter. Rashi tells us Abraham built the alter and proclaimed Hashem’s name but did not pray for his children when they attacked Ai, a battle they would lose.

Why did Abraham not pray for his children at Ai? Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik explains Abraham foresaw that Achan would steal from consecrated booty won by Joshua after conquering the land of Israel. The sin of one, Achan, made everyone unworthy of prayer. The people deserved defeat. At Ai, the Jewish people first learned each of us bore responsibility for all of us and all of us for each of us.

Our beloved BAYT has experienced more than its fair share of seemingly insurmountable challenges the past few years. Our members have stepped up with results that exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations. New challenges will arise. You will be called upon to step up. And you will. That is the lesson of Ai.

COVID-19 tests (no pun intended) each of us individually and collectively. For example, young families have different concerns than older members. Yes, everyone wants to return to BAYT safely. But doing so requires understanding and sometimes compromise, which we hope is reflected in our regularly updated COVID protocols.

COVID-19 made planning for the Yamim Noraim even more of a challenge than last year. But you told us we pulled it off in aces. We extend our collective, if not belated (forgive me, this is my first message since before Rosh Hashana) gratitude to the High Holiday Committee, the Ba’alei Tefillah, Korei, Musaf, Tokea and Shofar and our Gabboim. And once again, a hearty thanks to Rabbis Korobkin, Lesher and Metzger, Youth directors Rabbi and Rebbetzin Stein, our amazing office staff led by Avital Sandler and our always in motion facilities team led by Noel Fernandes.

Finally, responsibility for one another includes membership (and subsidy for those who need). Most members renewed early on. This year we also welcomed many new member families. Non-renewed members are significantly lower than at the same time last year. The membership renewal period will come to a hard close on November 30. Please do not delay.

To Stay or To Go? Shortly after first arriving in Israel, a famine breaks out and Avraham decides to head to Egypt in search of food. Was Avraham wrong to head to Egypt? Ramban sharply criticizes Avraham, explaining that his action of leaving Israel led to Bnai Yisrael eventually having to live in Egypt as slaves. This happened through the mechanism of Maaseh Avot Siman LiBanim, the actions of the fathers indicate what will happen to their descendants. At the end of our Parsha, Breishit 15, as part of the Brit Ben HaBetarim the borders to Avraham include from the Euphrates to the Nile River. This means that literally everywhere that Avraham ever walked had the potential to become part of the Land of Israel that G-d promised to Avraham. Perhaps Avraham was right not to rely on miracles. Now it is up to us and our merits for G-d to be able to grant us the remainder.

If I have already davened, and I enter a minyan which is singing part of davening together, am I obligated to sing along?

When a minyan sings part of davening together, some authorities view failure to participate as disrespectful and rule that one should sing along. However, some authorities are less concerned, permiting one who has already davened to remain silent.

When the minyan bows, one should bow along with them, demonstrating loyalty to Hashem. This is particularly relevant for Modim, and for Aleinu if the minyan says it together, as then the entire minyan bows simultaneously.
