Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
As I am sitting here reflecting as the year is drawing to a close, it is amazing how much we jam into a school year. It is amazing the amount of learning, work and growth our students experience. No different to other children you may say, but when you consider that they do this in two languages there is a difference. Our recent discussions with Marcia from the IB only reaffirm the special program we have here at BSPS. Marcia and the IB have acknowledged the unique program we have and are eager to work with our school. This is not just in an Australian sense but also internationally. Sometimes as parents we can easily forget and make judgments, when this is not like any normal school and your experience at school is most likely quite different to that our your child. So an open mind is essential and the partnership between the school and the parents needs to be as one, in order to ensure your child has the best support to undertake the challenge. On the most part we are well on the way as a community to achieve this and I thank our community for their commitment to that.
One such example of positive action has no doubt been the latest Christmas Market. It was nothing short of being our best ever and it was fantastic to see so many of our families attend. A special thanks to Nicole Whitty, Nicole Higham and Wendy Wright for their leadership, time and effort in making a difference for our school. Thank you to also to the band of supporters who assisted in any way to this special event.
Another positive, was the transition day and in particular the Prep BBQ. It was great to have so many of our mums help with the BBQ and ensure our new Prep families were welcomed to the community. Thank you. I must say it was also a fun experience for me being cross-examined about next year's staffing. There can be no doubting their determination in extracting information from a source! All will be revealed next Friday, but we can confirm the following arrangements for next year: Prep Team- Megan Payne, Sylvia Schmelzle, Matthew Campbell and Lisa Gillson.
We welcome to our school Lisa and Matthew. Lisa is a graduate who has experienced life at Bayswater South before. Matthew comes from the well-respected Glenferrie Primary School and he will play an integral part of ensuring our Physical Education program goes to another level.
In respect to the Curriculum, there will be some slight changes next year, taking into account the Government guidelines and what we feel best suits our special school. Matthew will lead our PE program, as a specialist in this area, with each class receiving one PE class and one sport class per week. Next year, students will have the opportunity to attend lunchtime sessions. The area of social and emotional development is also focus with every Friday after assembly scheduled for 'class circles', and we will also have one hour per week dedicated as a Wellbeing hour with emphasis on the Leader in Me, Electives, and student social skill development. Next year we will continue to build on our connection with Knox Council in developing our leaders and building resilience; we will connect with Bayswater Secondary in providing sessions of wood work, science experiments and technology; and excitingly we will work closely with the renowned 'Berry Street- in helping us with relationship building and dealing with the issues our children face. Our Math and Writing programs will be school wide and our inquiry methodology will continue to mature. Lastly, in the midst of this structure our teachers will continue to be trained and developed in terms of leadership and coaching.

Finally, in light of all this, I can report that we are now successfully operating on a sustainable financial model, well ahead of schedule; thankfully, largely due to the support of the three Parent Councils I have worked with led by Phil, Mandy, and Frank and the amazing work of Noleen Maxwell, our Business Manager. I sincerely thank them for their support. This means BSPS now has a greater choice in budgeting items. So I am very pleased to announce the following financial allocations for 2017:
$50, 000 for Year 5 & 6 students to have one to one laptops and 24 ipads for Year 1 and 2
$50 000 towards playground development
$40 000 towards oval/playground drainage development
$10 000 towards English teacher resources
$4 000 towards Math teacher resources
$3 000 each towards German, Science, Art, Music
$6 000 towards library books
$5 000 towards sport
When you further consider over the break and early Term 1 that our Year 5 -6 portables will be refitted with carpet and repainted, and receive updated ICT functionality ie projectors, and that our playgrounds and sand pit will be refreshed and upgraded, we are well on the way to ensuring our teachers and our students have access to quality resources.
That is it for now, for my final Bulletin report for the year, next week I will send home a letter containing some acknowledgements and more staffing information for 2017. If I can ask one favour, as you share this great news, please remind everyone to read the Bulletin. We need more of our community reading it in order to stay informed.

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-
Provide care and be a friend
Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to
Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)
Help a child sort through a problem or an issue
Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)
Connect with parents as the need arises
Refer a child to other professionals
Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the needs that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Regards Bronwyn Upton SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

ICT in action at BSPS
This term in the year 3/4 classes, Mr Mottrom and Mrs Hill have been using ‘Kidblogs’ to foster students’ love of writing and
creative thinking.
Students have learnt about Blogs. They have their own account and Blog page. They have made an Avatar and learnt how to
‘Post.’ They have used these posts to display their writing and share their ideas and opinions on various topics.
They have also used the Blog pages as a medium for the positive reinforcement of other students, by reading their posts and
commenting positively on their work.
Well done to all the year3/4 students for their positive Blog contributions this term.
In 2017 the new 3/4 students will continue to work on and develop this area of ICT at BSPS, publishing their work, thoughts
and opinions on various topics.

The year six students of 2016 would like to give a massive thank you to this wonderful primary school and everyone one in our school community, for all the great things that you made possible. All the camps and excursions were so fun and we are so grateful that you put effort into organising these wonderful experiences. A big thank you, to all the staff & teachers for teaching us so many things over the years we have been here. We would not be the people we are today without you! Lessons have been, as well as educational, fascinating, character-building, and fun. Your efforts are very much appreciated and we all are so grateful for your powerful influence and support. We would also like to thank the Parent Club for everything they helped organise and all the fundraisers that have gone towards the school. We would also like to thank you for you effort and contributions towards the Cuckoo Excursion and our Graduation. You have made such a big impact on helping to improve the school. To conclude, we would just like to give a proper farewell to this amazing community and thank all of you for making these seven years a wonderful experience. From the Year Six Leaders of 2016.

School Council President’s Reflections
As this is my last contribution to the newsletter in 2016, I would like to thank BSPS and its community for
having given me the honor and privilege to serve on the council for the last 4 years. In that time, I have
been a general member (2013), secretary (2014), vice-president (2015) and president (2016), I have seen
the introduction of the German program into grade 4 and the subsequent expansion towards the full 50-50
model, I have worked with 2 principals, 2 vice-principals, various staff and over 10 other parent council
members, seen about 100 students graduating and over 100 new students arriving, and experienced many
more BSPS events, far too many to name them all here.
Just as any parent who suddenly has a child that is coming of primary school age, but even more so as I
was not born and brought up in Australia, I had no idea what going to school in Australia would mean for
my child, my daughter Ella. Due to work commitments, I had already missed out on many of my
daughter's achievements at kinder and I wished that there was a way for me to get involved, to stay
informed, with my daughter's developments at school. Although there are many ways one can get
involved with events at school, I found that due to my work commitments the only way I could get
involved with the school was through participation in the council. I put my hand up for school council and
was duly elected.
If the story above sounds familiar to you, and you feel that you would like to be involved more with your
child's school, and you have been considering joining the council, let me assure you that being part of the
school council is extremely rewarding. Not for one moment have I regretted being part of the council.
Besides being able to make real developments happen at school, I have also received the personal
satisfaction of learning and understanding about our school system (as my children will be at school for at
least 12 years, the knowledge and experience gained will be relevant and useful for quite some time),
gained respect and understanding in people's efforts in ever improving our school (and believe me, there
are more different opinions on how to improve the school than there are parents at BSPS!), learned about
and immersed myself in our diverse community, and enjoy being recognized and able to recognize others
as a BSPS parent which means you immediately have something in common.
I can honestly say that, admittedly after some difficult times, that BSPS' future looks bright and that we
can expect many more good and interesting things to happen at BSPS. But I would not want to give
anything away and it is for future councils to build on the foundations that have been set up now. But keep
your eyes open for any developments!
I would like to thank the 2016 council for all their efforts
this year and in particular I wish continuing parent council
members Nicole Whitty, Nicola Liebler and Sevgi Fisher
good luck for 2017. I also would like to thank fellow
outgoing council members Martine Edlinger and Marc
Schonhardt for all their good work in the 2015 and 2016
council. I am certain that we all somehow, one way or
another, will stay involved with BSPS in the coming years.
And with my final words I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

TWILIGHT CHRISTMAS MARKET - WEDNESDAY 7TH DECEMBER 2016 Wow what a night. We were so very fortunate to have amazing weather which encouraged lots of people to come and enjoy our market. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, I know I did. As our major fundraiser for the year I am very proud to announce that we made approx $4000 from the night. That's such a fabulous result and we couldn't be more pleased. As I have previously mentioned, events such as these require a lot of time and efforts from many people. I'm going to acknowledge a few but please know that if your name is not mentioned that from the bottom of my heart Thank you to each and every individual who contributed. Be it that you gave your time, a donation, lent us chairs, tables, gazebos, ice, eskys, chopped onions, cooked a sausage, delivered a flyer, baked a cake, helped on a stall, helped set up or pack up, or just came along and enjoyed the night THANK YOU. Nicole Higham - for your ability to do a million things at once. Your motivation and vision to expand the market resulted in a fabulous night. A valuable addition to our Parent Club this year. Wendy Wright - one of the hardest workers I know. Nothing is too much trouble. I know how much you do on a daily basis, it doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated. The side show games were fabulous, well done. Kelly Merrin - for coordinating our cake stall. Another person who just gets on with it and someone I can rely on. Thanks also to Bronwyn, Cerie, Sladjana, Martine, Lucy, Kristy, Christina, Susan, Rebecca, Kathie, Polly, Lisa, Megan, Nichole, Ricardo, Danny, Matt, Scott, Lauren, Adam, Beate, Clare, Danielle, Debby, Nicole, Jackie, John ( + more I'm certain of it) I would also like to acknowledge and thank Jayson Williams for allowing us to try some new things and trust in our ideas. Thank you also to Noleen Maxwell for helping us with all things relating to the purchasing, financials and preparations leading up to the market and also on the night. Thanks also goes to Linton Roe for his continued enthusiasm in our ideas, thoughts and helping us in the planning. The performances were wonderful as always. Planning for Christmas Market Night 2017 has already begun !!!! Sponsorship of the Real Estate signage boards was courtesy of Scott McAuliffe at McGrath Real Estate in Croydon RAFFLE Another fabulous result for our annual Christmas raffle. We raised in excess of $1200 which is a wonderful achievement. We were very grateful to receive so many fabulous donations that we are able to offer 40 prizes. Some were drawn at assembly on Thursday more on Friday and the rest will be drawn over a few days next week. It was Mr Mottrams idea to draw out the suspense !!!! Just some of the fabulous prizes up for grabs.

A Christmas Tribute Poem To All Mum’s & Dad’s
For all of the presents
you've put under the tree, For all of the times
you've picked up after me
For all of the times that you tucked me in tight
And we stayed up to talk long into the night
For all of the days
I was feeling so down And the times that you turned
my smile from a frown
For the cookies you baked and the stockings you stuffed, For the cuts that you healed and the pillows you fluffed
For the time that you took off my bike training wheels
For the nights that you made me my favourite meals
For knowing the right thing
to say in my fears For making it through
all the good laughs and tears
For all of the days that you loved me so much
Even during the times when I made it so tough
For all of the memories we have already shared For the future for which we cannot be prepared
For all of your care
That I'll never forget Here's to the memories we share
and we haven't made yet!
Love you Mum & Dad, Merry Christmas! May the Christmas season be one of joy, peace and many blessings to you and your family. Remember to take time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and the greatest gift ever given. Bronwyn Upton BSPS Chaplain
