Across North America a growing number of hospitals are leading the effort to lower energy use and cut emissions. Hospitals are at the heart of every community, and should be the flagships of sustainability. The Greening Health Care Challenge will identify those facilities that are the top performers in energy and water use. The Challenge is open to all hospital facility types across North America and there is no cost to participate. You only need to contribute one year of energy use data and a basic profile of your hospital. In return, you will receive a concise assessment report showing how your hospital compares, and highlighting areas for improvement. Top performers will be recognized and profiled in 2012. Greening Health Care is the largest program of its kind in North America, working with facility managers since 2003 to help them benchmark and improve their energy and environmental performance. We know how efficient facilities can be, and what it takes to make them better. Our large database of facility performance and best practices will be shared with participating hospitals through the Greening Health Care Challenge. tHe CHallenGe There is a remarkably wide range of energy intensity (energy used per square foot) of hospitals. Most higher intensity facilities have considerable potential to lower energy use and costs and to cut emissions. The starting point for improvement is knowing where you stand. The chart shows the total energy performance of over 50 hospitals, with several using as much as three times more energy per square foot than other comparable facilities. By taking part in the Greening Health Care Challenge you will see where you fit in this range, and obtain energy performance indicators which point to areas for improvement. Benchmark results are normalized for weather differences and other material variables between the buildings. kinGston General HosPital“Kingston General Hospital has strong executive support for our energy initiatives, and grass roots commitment from across the organization. Over the past 5 years we have undertaken a series of in-house energy conservation projects, while also managing major renovations and expansions to meet rigorous LEED standards. Today we have 20% more space than 2 years ago with lower energy use than in 2008. Now we are embarking on a further hospital-wide energy and water conservation project forecast to save an additional $750,000/year.”

Chris Mackey, Director of Facility Engineering and Maintenance Services, Kingston General Hospital
