AUGUST, 2017 BAY MESSENGER INSIDE THIS ISSUE: FROM PASTOR JONATHAN- There were once two rabbits, Wanda the Wise and Frederick the Foolish, who were walking through a field. They were good friends and enjoyed their strolls together. On this walk, they came upon two carrots. One of the carrots had large leaves sprouting out of the top and the other looked much smaller from the sur- face. Frederick was excited and ran up to the carrot with the larger leaves. "I'll have this one," he proudly exclaimed and proceeded to extract it from the ground. Wanda shrugged her shoulders and pulled out the other carrot, which turned out to be much bigger. Frederick was surprised and asked how this could possibly be. Wanda looked at her friend and replied, "You can't always judge a carrot by its leaves." They kept on walking and came across another pair of carrots, again with differing sized leaves. This time Frederick allowed his friend the first pick. Wanda hopped to each carrot, inspected and sniffed them carefully and, to Frederick's surprise, chose the carrot with the larger leaves. As they each extracted their carrots from the ground, Frederick was bemused to see that his carrot was smaller than Wanda's. "I thought that you said that small leaves meant it would be a larger car- rot," he said. "No," replied Wanda, "I said don't judge a carrot by its leaves. It's also important to remember to think before you choose." Frederick nodded and they ate their carrots before continuing their stroll. For a third time, they found two carrots, again with different sized leaves. Frederick looked confused and didn't know what to do. Wanda indicated that he could choose which carrot to eat. The poor foolish rabbit pretended to in- spect each carrot, but he didn't really know what to do. He knew that he wasn't as smart as his friend and he looked to Wanda with a confused expression on his face. Wanda smiled warmly and hopped over to the carrots. She inspected them and pulled out one of the carrots. Frederick shrugged his shoulders and went to the other one before he was interrupted by his wise friend. "No, Frederick, this one's your carrot," she said. "But you made the choice and I'm sure it's the bigger one of the two. I don't know how you do it, but I guess you're just smarter than me." "Frederick, there's no point in having wisdom if you're not willing to share the benefits of it with others. You're my friend and I want you to have this carrot. A smart rabbit with a full stomach but no friends isn't really wise, is she?" "I guess you're right," said Frederick with a full mouth, "as usual." --betterlifecoachingblog.com January 13,2012 edition 10 AM - Worship, Second Blessing Sunday School Child Care Available A QUARTER FOR JESUS 6 ADULT DISCIPLESHIP 3 CALENDAR 7 CHILDREN’S MINISTRY 4 DIRECTORY PHOTO 5 OTHER NEWS 5 UPCOMING EVENTS 5 YOUTH MINISTRY 2

FROM PASTOR JONATHAN-

The 2017-18 season is sneaking up on us and I am so excit-ed to be a part of youth ministry. The youth are such a dynamic en-ergy in our church. Their passion, their laughter, their questioning, their ideas and their strength is such inspiration. They are our future and to be a part of their lives at this stage is an honor and a bless-ing. One thing I love is a good theme to help focus our ideas and goals. This fall the following verse is my guide…
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
We are all so much stronger than we think we are, especially when we take a breath and allow God’s love and wisdom in our hearts. The youth have a power and strength inside of them that they may or may not see yet. Our leadership team is set to use ac-tivities, lessons and events that are not just academic in nature, but hands-on experiences. We will take the principles and word of God and meet the youth where they are in their lives. We will try new things and we will LISTEN to their ideas and with God at their side, they will be our guides. Together we will find strength...in our spirits, our faith and love.
Oh, and we will eat snacks, jam to good music, and laugh a lot, too. Don’t hesitate to contact me with any of your thoughts, questions, ideas, etc. Can’t wait to get started (insert hand clapping here).
The Adult Bible Study class will be starting up again on Monday, September 11th, the Monday following Rally Day. We meet in the conference room off of the parlor at either 6:00 of 7:30pm depending on other commitments. This Fall our curriculum will focus on the various mani-festations of God’s covenants with His people in both the Old and New Testaments. We work with participant and teacher’s books from the Adult Bible Studies series and the variety of sources gives us more than one viewpoint to con-sider. Our books are already here for the Fall quarter but we can always get more on a moment’s notice. If you would like to join the group, don’t be shy—your friends are already here and you will probably know everybody. Just contact Ron Smith if you are interested in getting started.

Lay Servant Training
The Lay Servant program is a way for United Methodists to become more aware of their Christian faith, their Wes-leyan heritage, and the skills needed to
participate more intensively in the life of their church. The North Coast District of the UMC offers Lay Servant training opportunities once or twice a year at various church loca-tions throughout the district. Both beginning and advanced classes will be offered on Oct. 6th and 7th at the Rockport UMC. If you would like more details contact Ann Freyer or Ron Smith.
