W hat the gyms and diet companies rarely tell you. We all have core values and beliefs that form the way we act and react to things in life. Some of these are learnt, some inbuilt. But how often do we evaluate if these values are serving us positively or negatively?

We, me included, carry on with our daily routine as normal without wondering if today could have been better had we looked a little closer at our part in it. I’m not going all wishy washy, I feel this evaluation process is vital if you are hoping to successfully lose weight for good, especially when looking at the learnt portion of our ‘health values’.

Over the years I’ve heard so many Clients say they feel a necessity to finish their plate at meal times, whether they’re full or not. When asked, this nearly always goes back to learnt behav-iour from meal times with their parents. Plenty of men didn’t exercise for years before training with me because they believed gyms were only for fit or posing people. This pre-conception is usually a result of the peer group they grew up with, or an old fashioned father figure having this view. Many people overly use food as a gesture of affection or a treat for themselves and others, which again is often learnt at an early age.

These types of health values and many more that we’ve learnt throughout our lives can be a major cause of lifelong body weight issues. How do you expect to stick to any diet or exercise plan, if at your very core you believe it wrong to ever leave food on your plate, exercise is for posers and anytime you feel down or want to celebrate you must eat and drink as much as possible? It’s almost impossible for any lasting change in behaviour, if we don’t look at correcting our restricting beliefs and replacing them with healthier ones.

Think of your past attempts to lose weight and maintain a healthy diet, in most cases people stick to a new regime for around 1-3 months and then begin to resort back to their old habits and I’m guessing the voice in your head that takes you off track is quoting your restricting beliefs. “I’ve done really well, so I deserve a treat”. “I’ve always said, I’m just not the exercise/healthy type, I’ll never be thin”. Sound familiar? Are these actual facts, or just something you’ve learnt and now accept as facts?


A Counsellor friend of mine told me about an interesting exercise to do. She told me how sometimes you can actually tell where you learnt what you’re thinking by listening to whose voice is speaking in your mind. For example you might be thinking, “finish what’s on the plate, somebody is starving somewhere”! If you listen, it’s probably one of your parents speaking; it’s quite a revealing exercise.

A more specific exercise is for you to write down your feelings about food and exercise. Have headings for both and think about whether: You feel positive or negative about them? What are your most restricting food and exercise beliefs? How can you change/remove these? What beliefs help you in terms of your health? Keep these at the front of your mind! How do you feel before, during and after eating or exercising? What do you feel others will say if you diet/exercise? Is this true? Are you afraid to fail in your new healthier lifestyle? Why is this? How do healthy people view diet and exercise? What can you learn and copy from these views?

There’s plenty more, but hopefully these questions will begin to help you understand why it is you and so many others constantly struggle with diets and regular exercise, take the time to evaluate your restrictive beliefs and soon you’ll be viewing a healthy lifestyle as the norm. Good luck!

OVER £2.7k FOR HELP FOR HEROES IN MEMORY OF PTE. GAVIN ELLIOTT

at Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Restaurant, Barnby Moor

Two years ago, Sue Ellis (Restaurant Supervisor at Ye Olde Bell Hotel) tragically lost her 19-year old nephew, Pte Gavin Elliott, when he was killed in action as a result of a gunshot wound whilst on foot patrol in Helmand province in Afghanistan.

In his memory and as a mark of respect of his service to our country, Sue together with her sister and brother-in-law, Jayne & James Elliott (Gavin's parents) and a team of friends from the hotel organised a 1940s Evening on the poignant date of 11:11:11 (Friday 11 Nov 2011).

The hotel management, guests and suppliers all supported the event with donations and prizes and they raised over £2,700 for Help for Heroes, as they knew Gavin would want to help the charity which looks after his fellow servicemen and women.

The Bradgate Suite at the hotel was a spectacle with 1940s memo-rabilia kindly loaned by Bassetlaw Museum and patriotic décor by Il Bello Décor with guests in an amazing variety of 1940s dresses, uniforms etc from the era, which all added to the atmosphere! Leenie-Jayne sang all the great wartime songs and encouraged the guests to join the sing-along over supper before dancing to the White Rose Disco kindly donated by Gary Ashcroft. The joint winners of the 1940s dress competition were Josh & Amy Humphreys (pictured), who then drew the prizes for the extensive raffle, all generously donated including a flight with David Bell of Treswell in his De Havilland.

During his short life, Gavin (affectionately known by his com-rades as ‘Billy Elliot’ always said he believed 'Live for Today, Learn from Yesterday and Hope for Tomorrow'.

C inema Construction Reaches Major Milestone

The construction effort at Worksop’s brand new multiplex cinema has reached a major milestone today with the installation of

custom-produced windows spanning the height of the building, breathing life into the cinema’s shell and marking the closing phase of its external development.

Each of the 65 window panes, which measure an impressive 1.6 metres by 3.2 metres, are the largest size capable of being manufactured within the United Kingdom and will provide a unique focal point for the cinema as well as an impressive backdrop for Worksop town centre.

James Collington, Managing Director for Savoy Cinemas, said: “We’re delighted to have reached this exciting and significant landmark in the construction process which illustrates both the efficiency and dedication of the team involved.

“We are committed to providing a fully-accessible, state-of-the-art multiplex cinema to serve the Bassetlaw community who, until now, might otherwise have had to travel outside the district to catch the latest blockbuster.”

The structural scaffolding that supports the multiplex shell will be stripped over the coming weeks and the highly advanced roofing technology, known as a composite clad system, which has the capability to expand and retract in line with acoustics will also be completed.

The multiplex is costing £3 million to build and once completed in March 2012 it will boast the very latest in digital 3D technology and Dolby 7.1 sound within six, fully air conditioned, auditoriums capable of housing more than 900 people

On Friday 27th January we will be presenting, in Everton Village Hall, another of our popular cab-

aret evenings. With the help of a subsidy from Nottinghamshire Village Ventures we have

secured a top class jazz group, whose members have performed at international level.

Fascinating Rhythm is a newly formed group of four talented artists. An indication of their quality can be seen from some of the top names they have worked with as individuals. These include: The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Jacqui Dank-worth, Hayley Westenra, Georgie Fame, Barry Manilow and Cliff Richard. As previously we will be kicking off the evening at 6:30 pm, when the doors and licensed bar will open. At about 6:45 we will be serving a hot meal (vegetarian option available) and the performance will start at 7:30. We will be serving a sweet course in the interval.

Bawtry Library DMBC Cabinet met and re-affirmed its decision. Therefore the library closures are continuing as planned. Arrangements for the Bawtry Community Library project are well advanced, and the legalities and small print our currently being discussed in readiness for the takeover date of the 1st April, 2012. Several people have already volunteered their services and a stage one training session on basics has already taken place. More volunteers are required and will be welcomed, as will donations from any source for the future running of the library in Bawtry. Coffee Mornings will take place on a monthly basis, the first of which took place at the beginning of December and raised £60. It will be your Community Library and we hope you will support it. The Bawtry Group is currently looking to ‘test the water’ on the recruitment of ‘front of house’ volunteers, and also grounds maintenance volunteers. Persons interested should pro-vide their details to the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Mrs Lesley Gilfedder on 01302 711256 or email: [email protected].

The Business Sub Committee headed by Michael Maguire is also working towards a viable Busi-ness Plan and possibilities of outside funding both from local business and other sources.

Interim contact for this project is via Mr. George Spencer (Chairman-Bawtry Town Council) not the Clerk to the Council. (Details at the end of this newsletter) School Crossing Patrol – Station Road Efforts will again be made in the New Year to try and fill the vacancy on Station Road. Great effort took place in ensuring that this vital role was not lost – however if no one comes forward to fill the vacancy then it may fall by the wayside. Please do not let that happen.

If you can help please contact Mr George Spencer (Chairman – Bawtry Town Council) who will ensure your details are passed to DMBC. Highway Issues Damaged street furniture (ie lighting columns, traffic lights, seating etc) should be reported to DMBC for action. Please remember that the Customer Service Centre at Bawtry Library is still the point for you personally to report any matters that concern you to DMBC, the highway authority, or by tele-phoning Doncaster Council on 736000. Christmas 2011 We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the Christmas Carols arrangements, and you the public for supporting the event year on year. Bawtry Retail Associa-tion (via members) has agreed to provide refreshments this year, for which we are very grateful. Window Dressing Competition Due to the earlier publication of Bawtry Today due to Christmas the result of the competition is not yet known and will be reported on in the next issue. It is however noticeable that several business premises have very attractive displays and so the judging may be difficult this year. Thanks go to Craig Dowie of the Crown Hotel for his usual hospitality with regards this event.

Austerfield Parish Council News January 2012 Season’s greetings and a happy New Year to all Austerfield residents! This winter issue of Austerfield Parish Council News highlights council activities over recent months and looks for-ward to development plans for 2012:

Council are pleased to welcome Mr Gary Lingard as a Member of Austerfield Council follow-ing his successful co-option. Contact details for all your Parish Councillors, together with meeting dates, can be found in the village notice boards.

The newly established DMBC Neighbourhood team are providing excellent support to the parish. The clearing of blocked drains around William Bradford Close and South View are part of the flood prevention strategy for this problem area. Gating the bridleway on Low Common Lane will shortly be completed to alleviate nuisance, and criminal, activity from off-road drivers.

The recreation field play scheme has been awarded a £3,000 grant from our Ward Council-lors which is excellent news. With this support, and the support of the parents working group, a much larger application for grant funding has been made.

The Council are working with Bawtry Carbon International and the Environment Agency (the Licencing body) to assist the company in identifying and stopping the ‘fugitive dust’ nuisance residents’ experience. Analysis of dust samples taken from properties around the village should help to pinpoint problem areas at the factory so solutions can be found.

Can you spare a few hours to assist the Bawtry Community Library? Over 50 volunteers have signed up and more are welcome. Further details from Cllr Lesley Gilfedder, tel: 01302 711 256.

And finally, Councillors joined with over fifty Austerfield pensioner’s in a celebratory Christ-mas lunch at the Mayflower. An excellent meal was enjoyed thanks once again to the gener-ous support of our Ward Councillors.

N ew Business Venture for Local Businesswoman Local mother and entrepreneur Helen Thomson (owner of Bawtry Natural Health) came up with the idea for her latest business venture, The Nursery Paint Company, when she was pregnant with her first child. Mrs Thomson, 36, has launched what she

claims to be the first ever chemical and volatile organic compound (VOC) free, antibacterial nursery paint made from soya beans.

Mrs Thomson and her husband, George, decided to move house when they discovered she was expecting. Six weeks before Fletcher’s birth, Mrs Thompson found herself decorating her son’s nursery. She said: “There we were painting away and I said to my husband, I’m not sure this can be right. I went on the internet and started reading about volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The majority of paints are made from petrochemicals and the fumes are quite toxic,” She added: “Most paints have VOCs in them. Even some paints that use natural resins and natural dyes still have VOCs in them.“ VOCs have been linked to breathing problems, asthma and headaches, and have been known to be a trigger for ADHD. They are also linked to premature birth and child-hood leukaemia.

She got in touch with Green Earth Paints, in Doncaster, as she knew they were making soya based paint, the result being that Green Earth Paints now manufactures the paints for The Nursery Paint Company. Mrs Thomson said: “We thought about the fact that we could make paint antibacterial by putting silver in.” She said: “When the kids get cuts we always spray them with colloidal silver. I knew the properties of silver and how amazing it was. To put it in a paint was exceptional. There are other VOC free paints available. I’m not claiming we are the first at all. But they are not antibacterial.”

The Nursery Paint Company has now collaborated with children’s clothing shop Olive Loves Alfie, whose founder, Ashlyn Gibson, has come up with colours for an older children’s range. The new range of paints is being launched in January, adding an extra 12 colours to The Nursery Paint’s existing 20.

The Nursery Paint Company already supplies stockists across the UK including Honey Jam in London, Spit Spot Babies in Norfolk, and Baby Business, in Wirral. Mrs Thomson said: “We’ve had loads of wholesale enquiries. We are still small, and coming from a retail background, I know customer service is hugely important. I don’t want to say yes to everyone and then not be able to provide the service. We want to take things slowly.” Mrs Thomson, whose children, Fletcher and Purdy, are now five and two respectively, said “There has been interest from Saudi Arabia, Greece and Germany”. But she added: “What we need to do is make sure we do this country well first of all. At the end of the day we are a small company and we have to be realistic.” Mrs Thomson added: “It’s been brilliant. I keep having to pinch myself. The reception we’ve had has been amazing.”
