Paper-II Part-B
The Part - B of Paper II in English(T.M.) main-
ly consists of Comprehension passages from
Prescribed Work-Book and two unseen pas-
sages. This, tests students' ability to read and
comprehend given passage and answer the short
questions that follow. Students are advised to
read the passages twice or thrice and answer the
question using simple language.
I. Read the following passage carefully:
There is one thing that is yours alone which no
one else can have, and that is the pattern of your
fingerprints. You leave your fingerprints behind
when you touch anything. The Chinese were the
first people to realize this. So they used a
thumb-print instead of a signature on very
important documents. Asignature can be copied
but a thumb-print can't be. In the late nineteenth
century, the real importance of fingerprints
became known. A man called Francis Galton
began to study the ridges on the finger-tips. He
found that no two people had the same pattern
of ridges. He also learn that the pattern does not
change as a person grows older. The police saw
at once how fingerprints could help them. Theybegan to keep records of fingerprints of people
who were known to be criminals.
Now answer the question in a word orphrase

I started playing cricket when I was a small boy.
I remember how once I almost broke my moth-
er's nose. She used to bowl to me in the smallroom in our house where we played our 'daily
match' with a tennis ball. There was very little
space, so she would kneel and throw the ball
gently to me. Once I hit one straight back at her
and it hit her on the nose, which started bleed-
ing. Although it was only a tennis ball, she was
very near me when I hit it. This was why the
ball hit her with such force. I was frightened,
but she said it was nothing. She washed her face
and, as the bleeding had stopped, we went on
with the game. But for the rest of the day I
played more carefully-forward defence only,
and no attacking shots.
Now answer the following questions.

3. Why do you think she would kneel to bowl?
4. Did they stop playing cricket after he hit her
nose?

VI. Read the passage carefully and answerthe questions that follow?
Long ago, people had the idea that death was
like a long sleep. But a sleeping person
breathes, his heart beats, he moves, he dreams
and he reacts to a touch or a poke. A dead per-
son does none of these things.
When a person dies, his heart stops beating,
breathing stops and the dead person no longer
reacts or responds. After death, body tempera-
ture drops quickly and the skin feels cold to the
touch. The blood settles and may appear as
bluish patches under the skin. Several hours
later the muscles contract and the body stiffens-
this condition known as rigor mortis. Later still,
the death muscles relax and the body becomes
limp again.1. How is a sleeping person different from a
dead person?
2. What happens when a person dies?
3. Why does the skin feel cold to touch?
4. What is rigor mortis?
5. When does the body become limp again?

One day the old man went very far into the
forest, and began to feel thirsty. He went look-
ing for water and soon found a spring which he
had not seen before. The water in it was cool
and clear. He eagerly knelt down, lifted the
water in his cupped hands and drank. The water
made him feel fresh, and even seemed to give
him a new strength.
He bent down again to drink. As he did so,
he saw his face in the water and started back. It
was certainly his own face, but now it was the
face of a very young man- smooth like a boy's.
His bald head was now covered with thick black

wait here while I go. It is not safe for both of us
to be away from the house. I shall be back soon.

She knelt down and began to drink the water.
Oh, how cool and sweet it was! She drank, anddrank stopped for breath, and began again.
Her husband was waiting for her at the cot-
tage. He expected to see her come back changed
into a pretty young man. But she did not come
back at all. Getting anxious he set out to look for
her. He looked for her at the fountain and
around it. But he could not find her anywhere.

Letter Writing Important Letters
A letter has five important parts..Letter Writing
The question no 13 deals with letter-writing.
This question is also marks-fetching, hence care
should be taken to score maximum marks.
Certain tips are given below
Read the hints or clues given twice or thrice
thoroughly, you will find that you will have
to write a letter to somebody, and about
something.
These two things help you understand and
write the letter.
Select the format of the letter. Specimen
formats are given for your information.
There are three types of letters: i) Social or
Personal ii) Business iii) Official. The
Format for business and official letters isalmost the same while it is somewhat
different in Case of personal letters.

Yours sincerely/truly,24567890.
Note: Two formats of official letters are given ,
They are different only in the aspect of writing
Address i.e. you can write 'from' and 'to' address
parallel as in the second format or you can write
first 'from' address and below to address.
A letter has five important parts
1. Heading: It consists of Address, Place and
Date.
2. Greetings or Salutation: Write as Dear
father/mother/brother/sister/friend/Raju/Ge
eta etc., in case of personal or social letter.
Write Dear Sir/ Sir/Madam, in case of offi-cial letters, followed by (,)
3. Body of Letter: This is the main part of the
letter in which you are writing what you
want to. Divide into two or three para-
graphs.
4. Leave taking orSubscription: It should be
written on the right side of the bottom of the
letter. In Personal letters write as "Yours
lovingly' (without an apostrophe) and
"Yours sincerely/truly" for strangers and
"Yours faithfully" or "Yours obediently" for
teachers/Principal or to Police Inspector.
5. Writing Address on the envelope: This is
also an important aspect of writing a letter.
In personal letters, take pains, to draw a box
in rectangular shape and write the address
of the person whom you have written the
letter. In other forms of letter i.e. Official or
Business, you needn't draw such box, as
you have already written the address on the
top corner, alongside the From address. (see
the specimen copy of both the letters.) For
heading, address, greetings and leave taking
one marks each is earmarked, hence you
can easily score four marks but only when
you attempt the body of the letter and the
letter written on the topic. Therefore you areadvised to write the body of the letter and to
the topic then you are sure to score 7 - 8
marks for the letters.
