The several SYSCOMPACT modules available are com-plete compact, fault location systems for pre-locating and pin-pointing high resistance, low resistance and intermit-tent cable faults on low and medium voltage cables.Ease of operation and the use of well proven fault location methods make for rapid and straightforward fault location.Because of their compact design the units are easily transportable and suitable for installation in any small com-mercial vehicle.The modules can also be modified to suit customers‘ specific requirements.

SYSCOMPACT 2000 MCable Fault Location System

Application

The SYSCOMPACT 2000 M is a mobile and multi-functional cable location system. The sur-ge and test generator is desi-gned for the testing of cables and sheaths and for the precise location of high-resistance and intermittent faults.Its preferred use is in low and medium voltage networks for locating faults on cables up to 65 km in length. The integration of established fault pre-location methods SIM-MIM and Impulse Current Method enables the precise location of high and low-resi-stance as well as intermittent faults using the IRG 2000 Echometer.

The SYSCOMPACT 3000 is a multi-functional cable fault loca-tion system in a modular 19” plug-in design. The surge and test generator is designed for testing of cables and cable sheaths and precise location of high-resistance and intermittent faults.The SYSCOMPACT 3000 is used preferably in low and medium voltage networks for locating faults on cables over 200 km in length. The integration of the latest fault pre-location methods SIM-MIM and Impulse Current Method enables the precise location of high and low-resistance as well as intermittent faults using the IRG 3000 Echometer.The IRG 3000 computer-sup-ported Impulse-Reflection Measu-ring System enables automated cable fault location. For the first time, the software supports a standardised computer link in the user’s language.

Cable Fault Location Systems – TRANSCABLE 3000

The EURODESK system fea-tures 19“ plug-in modules. All control and monitoring is laid out centrally in the operator‘s field of vision. The interface for TRANSCABLE 3000 software, based on the multi-language Windows® version, is user-friendly and can be accessed in different languages. In side cabinets there is provision for 19“ rack units, drawers or a hinged desk top. The system is most often fitted into com-mercial vehicles, such as the Mercedes Benz Sprinter with an overall weight of 3.5 t. Cable test vans are by design divided into control and high voltage areas separated by a partition wall.

The MPS phase selector switch is available in different versions.

The phase selector switch for desk installation is compact and enables encapsulated and protected operation of the test van.

1 MS 230 Mains Supply Unit

The mains supply unit comprises bipolar safety fuses, fault cur-rent breaker, and mains sockets for connecting external auxili-aries. The vehicle battery is automatically charged through the fitted battery charging unit with integrated overload protection.

2 LP 3 Low-Voltage Panel

It enables a direct connection between the attached cable and the low-voltage test sockets on the LP3.The test sockets are used to connect an external insulation test unit, an acoustic generator or other external auxiliaries.

3 LS 3 Low-Voltage Panel

The LS3 low-voltage panel has the same function as the LP3 and is additionally fitted with a rotary switch for phase selection on auxiliaries.

4 KTG Cable Drum Rack

BAUR will supply a connection cable to suit your variant and system arrangement. Due to the simpler handling, a single-phase, sheathed high-voltage cable is preferably used. The cable drum rack has a particularly robust design. The KTG M6 can also be supplied with electric drive upon request.

VLF truesinus®

The VLF truesinus® test method filed for patent by BAUR ena-bles cable networks to be tested for electrical strength to inter-national and national standards.

The conceptual design of BAUR TRANSCABLE software permits the test sequence of the VLF source to be controlled either manually or automatically. A standardised operation in the selected language guides the user through the test sequence.

The high-voltage source is designed for VLF truesinus® and also for DC and square wave test voltages. It also permits the use of diagnosis procedures.

Methods of Diagnosis

Partial Discharge Measurement using VLF truesinus®

The partial discharge measurement enables a quick, reliable deter mination of the partial discharge measurement and source location along a section of cable.

The BAUR TRANSCABLE software user interface guides the ope-rator through the entire measuring process, from calibration to evaluation and generation of the automatic test report.

The measuring results are shown graphically and provide a clear view of the partial discharges over the entire cable length.

Tan Delta VLF truesinus®

Tan Delta VLF truesinus® cable diagnosis is a tried and tested, well-established method for the integral assessment of the aging condition of an installed cable. Besides customised evalu-ation criteria, BAUR provides a database collected over 15 years for the assessment of plastic cables (PE/VPE).

The continuous observation and recording of the diagnosis results enable statements to be produced on criteria - such as good, aged, severely damaged -for the assessment of cable insulation.

BAUR TRANSCABLE software permits an automatic measuring sequence alongside which the VLF high-voltage generator is controlled and the current measuring results are recorded, eva-luated and documented.

Insulation Test

The most important and oldest diagnosis of a cable installation is the insulation measurement. The leakage current with incre-ased DC voltage enables a reliable statement to be made on the condi tion of an oil-insulated (PILC) cable. In the case of plastic cables, the leakage current is a criterion for the assessment of sheath damage.

Methods of Fault Location

Pre-Location

Cable TracingA successful cable fault location relies on knowing the position of the cable and other lines laid in the soil. Magnetic frequency procedures can be used to establish the position and depth of the cable using the minimum or maximum method. The exact position of a joint can be established using the Twist Field Method.

Time Domain Reflection Method (TDR)The TDR method is the most established and widely used mea-suring method for establishing the total length of a cable and the distance of cable faults and interruptions.

Fault Burn Down TechnologyHigh-resistance cable faults are treated using powerful high-vol-tage burner units. The emerging fault is low-resistance and can therefore easily be measured using the TDR method. This application is employed for conventional PILC cables.

Secondary Impulse Method SIMMultiple Impulse Method MIMThe SIM/MIM is the latest and most efficient measuring method for pre-locating cable faults. The particular benefits of this method is the simple handling, universal application and extremely simple interpretation of the echograms. High-resistance faults are ignited by a surge voltage impulse, the fault distance is measured repeatedly by the IRG Echometer within a single discharge, automatically stored and displayed on the screen. The fault distance evaluation runs fully-automatically.

Impulse Current Method ICMICM is the conventional location method for high-resistance cable faults, especially on long cables. A surge voltage generator up to 32 kV is coupled to an echome-ter via a current converter. The breakdown in the fault generates a current impulse, which is recorded by the echometer.

Surge Current Differential Method DICMThe simultaneous measurement of two cable cores using the differential method enables the fault distance to be determined, even with cable faults that are difficult to locate. This measuring method is applied particularly for long cables, e.g. >10 km, in the T-branch network and overhead transmission line faults.

Decay Method and Differential Decay MethodThe Decay Methods are used to locate cable faults with high break down voltage > 32 kV. A VLF or DC high-voltage source ignites the high-resistance fault and the transient wave recorded in the echometer is used to measure the fault distance.

Acoustic Fault LocationThe acoustic method is applied for precise pin-pointing of the cable fault. The filter that can be selected in the receiver and the propagation time measurement supports the user in field applications and permits a reliable, precise location of the fault even in difficult soil conditions.

Acoustic Propagation Time MeasurementA micro-controller calculates the fault accurate to the centime-tre from the magnetic and acoustic wavelengths. The distance is indicated in metres or in feet.

Voltage Drop MethodVoltmetric methods are used to locate the sheath fault and establish faults on illumination cables or low-voltage cable installations from the voltage drop.

Twist Field Location The Twist Field Location Method patented by BAUR is success-fully employed in signal and multi-core cable installations. If conventional location of saturated short circuits fails in locating sleeves, the magnetic frequency twist field location method pro-vides a simple solution. Cable Identification Reliable readout is a safety-specific activity prior to cutting a cable. The computer-supported APT (Amplitude – Phase – Time) procedure developed by BAUR is the most reliable method of reading out one core the other.

Cable Sheath Fault LocationThe cable sheath is usually insulated with PVC or PE synthetic, in order to prevent ingress into the insulation. To detect faults at the earliest possible stage, DC sources are used to test sheath insulation and DC impulse signals for locating sheath faults.
