Future Media

Future Media are a smaller publishing company, yet they were the only company in the top 10 consumer publishers whose total circulation rose by 0.8%.

The strap line on their website says “Magazines, websites & events - for people with a passion” This shows that

the magazines they publish are for a very small segment of the market, and do not have many

magazines to compete with unlike Bauer.

Future Media produce magazines about photography; such as ‘Digital Camera’, music; such as ‘Classic Rock’

and gaming; such as ‘Games Master’.

Future Media’s MagazinesOne of the music magazines they produce is Guitarist. This is a magazine for guitarists

that teach them how to play different songs. There are not many mainstream magazines on the market that target this, so if the buyer likes the magazine, they would buy it every week/month.

Another music magazine they produce is Classic Rock. This magazine is focused on old rock bands, and there is nothing like it on the market. Therefore, the buyers of this magazine would buy it every time a new issue is printed.

As Future Media’s magazines are segmented at tiny sectors of the market, it means that they don’t always have competition.

Consumer Magazines DownfallMagazine Sales have gone down rapidly, due to the recession and people being able to get the

information from magazines else where, such as the internet and books.

These figures come from the Audit Bureau Of Circulation (ABC) figures for January-June 2009:

Bauer’s NME magazine sales declined by 27.2% and their sale figures went down to 40,948

Another magazine of Bauer’s, Kerrang also declined by 28.3% and sales went down to 42,253.

Whereas, Future Publishing’s magazine Metal Hammer lost 5.2% of sales, but their sale figures is 46,004, which is more than NME and Kerrang.

This shows that Future Publishing is the institution to go to with our magazine, as they are doing well with their magazine sales, and they do not have a music magazine targeting teenage girls.
