A Bat is a Mammal

•What does Mammal mean?

Bats have Wings

• Bats use their wings to fly.

• A bat wing has four long bones.

• A little thumb sticks out in front.

Where do Bats Live?

• Bats live in groups called colonies.

• Many colonies of bats live in dark caves.

• Some bats live in hollow logs or holes in trees.

What do Bats Eat?

• Mostly Insects• Fruit• Frogs• Rodents

When do Bats Sleep?• Bats sleep during

the day.• This means that

bats are nocturnal.• Bats sleep upside

down.

How do bats fly in the dark?• Bats makes

squeaks and clicks.• The sound bounces

off trees.• The echo helps the

bat find his way home.

• This is called echolocation.

Do Bats Migrate?

• When it gets cold, some bats move to warmer places.

• This trip is a long one. It takes many weeks.

Do Bats Hibernate?

• Some bats don’t go on long trips to find warmer places.

• Some bats that live in cold places sleep in the winter.

• This sleep is called hibernation.

• They sleep close together to keep warm.

Bat Enemies

• Big bats can eat smaller bats.• Snakes will eat baby bats.• Barn owls like to eat bats.• Cats can catch bats.

How are bats helpful to our world?

• Bats can eat insects.

• Bats also spread pollen from plant to plant. This helps new plants grow.

Are Bats Dangerous?

• Bats are shy animals.• If you leave bats alone, they will

leave you alone.
