Batteries and start-upMuch is said about how the battery, in modernvehicles, must supply a constantly increasingnumber of accessories (radio, satellite navigationsystem, air conditioning, pressure sensors, lightingsystem, windscreen wipers, window defroster, etc.).
This increases the speed of discharge of the batterywhile, on the other hand, the alternator chargesthe battery. If the trip is short (home-workplace,for example) then the energy supplied by thealternator is not enough to fully recharge the battery, especially if the battery is not a high performancetype. In some cases this problem can be overcomeby using a high capacity battery. But if this unit is not properly maintained by the userthen it inevitably leads to a loss of performance.
And even though modern batteries are designed toresist extreme climatic conditions it is inevitable that, during the winter, the battery performance drops.
This is caused both by a reduction of the chemicalreactions in the battery and by a greater demandfor energy from the starter motor.
The following chart shows the performance trendas the temperature changes. This is why engineignition failure is generally a wintertime problem.
Power required by the engine
TemperatureBattery capacity
How a traditional electromechanical booster operatesUsing a starter to start a vehicle becomesnecessary every time the storage battery does nothave enough energy to power the starter motor. Inthis case the energy that is required can be takenby connecting the starter to the mains power andsetting it to start-up mode. To find which starteris suitable for the needs of our battery we just haveto find the values given, on the battery rating plate,
at “FAST COLD DISCHARGE CURRENT” andcompare these with the values indicated under theitem “Starting current 1 Volt/C EN 60335-2-29” onthe starter. These values must be similar.
This is the case when the battery is fullydischarged. If the battery is charged in advancethen a less powerful starter can be selected.

What isa battery ?
A battery is a device able tostore electrical energy,
supplied to it by a directcurrent generator duringcharging, in the form of
chemical energy. It returnsthis energy, in the form of
direct current electricalenergy, during discharging.
This energy storage andreturn process is repeated
for the entire life of thebattery. The main
parameters that definebatteries and their
performance levels are:■ Rated voltage
■ Rated capacity■ Fast discharge
current (at -18 °C).and are indicated onthe rating plate that
accompanies every battery:
■ Rate voltageThe voltage difference
measured across the polesof the battery with the
circuit open and after aminimum 4 hoursstabilisation time.
■ Capacity (Ah)The quantity of charge
that can be achieved by discharging a storage
battery at a specificdischarge rate (current)
down to a preset voltage.
■ Fast dischargecurrent (A)
Indication of the power thebattery is able to deliver.
This value is measured bydischarging a fully charged
battery at -18 °C ata constant preset current.

Why a battery discharges ?
Car unused for a prolonged period.
Difficult or repeated starting.
Use of the car for short trips that donot permit the battery to recharge.
Inefficient dynamo or alternator.
Leaving lights or other parts of theelectrical system on for long periodswith the car ignition off.
All these causes make it necessaryto check the battery in order to avoiddifficult start-ups that help causepremature battery wear. It may happenthat the battery is no longer able to storeenergy, usually caused by inadequatemaintenance or incorrect use.In this case one or more battery cellshave short-circuited: recharging, in thiscase, is useless and the only thing to dois to replace the battery.
Charging a battery
Battery charging can be done for differenttime periods depending on the capacityof the battery, its state of charge and thecurrent we want the appliance to deliver.
Slow charges are made with fairly lowcurrents that in any case do not exceedapproximately 1/10th of the capacity ofthe battery.
Fast charges are made with highercurrents, approximately 1/5th of thecapacity of the storage battery. Duringfast charges the charging time is generallycontrolled by a timer to avoid batteryoverheating.
Slow charges are preferable for a longerbattery life, preventing the battery fromoverheating. Note that the exact stateof charge of the battery can only bedetermined by a hydrometer that canmeasure the specific density of theelectrolyte.
Guideline electrolyte density values are:(kg/l at 20 °C):
