Principal’s Message

The Sensational Circus I hope you were fortunate enough to witness or even be part of “The Night Circus”, the whole school performance that wrapped up Term 2 with a bang. The better part of 200 students, over 30 staff and an elephant had a hand in bringing Mr Perrem and Ms McCutcheon’s dream to reality. The show has garnered praise from parents, media outlets, the Director Public Schools NSW, the Performing Arts Unit, and perhaps most poignantly, the students who participated. Ella Chatelain in Year 10 summarised my feelings about the value of this production in her comments to the Bay Post:

“In this production I’ve made new friends, most I’ve never talked to before in the school. It just brings the whole school together, even if it’s just painting a chess piece.”

As always, our students say it best. Great job everyone.

NAIDOC Week Our school celebration of NAIDOC week commences today with a traditional smoking ceremony and flag raising in our Aboriginal garden. A week of cultural activities follows and I invite everyone to our assembly and luncheon on Thursday.

The theme of this year’s NAIDOC week is “Our Languages Matter”. The local Walbanga people have kept the Dhurga language alive and are passing it on to a new generation of speakers. You may be familiar with the greeting walawaani njindiwan, often uttered during the welcome or acknowledgement of country at our assemblies, which means we hope you had a safe journey. Native languages are an area of study in the Aboriginal Studies courses we have established here in Year 9 and Year 11 this year, but I genuinely hope that

we can introduce a broader range of students to Dhurga as its use increases in the community and more teachers become available.

Quota Student of the Year The Quota Student of Year trophy has returned to the school once again, this time courtesy of Emilee Clout’s outstanding feats of scholarship. The quest was held on Monday 26 June at the Soldiers Club. Students from Moruya, Ulladulla, Braidwood, Carroll College and St Peter’s College competed against Emilee, Jack McFarlane and Zoe Vandenberg from Batemans Bay.

The students took part in an individual interview before three judges where they were required to show their knowledge of current affairs as well as detail their own personal development and school achievements. This was then followed by a two-part public speaking competition – a four-minute prepared speech then a one-minute impromptu speech. The impromptu speech topic was “heroes”.

All students acquitted themselves admirably and were excellent ambassadors for their schools.

The Great Debate Education Week is a state-wide annual event to recognise the role of public education in NSW. This year it will be held from 31 July to 4 August (Week 3). The week highlights the achievements of local public schools, putting the spotlight on our students, our teachers and the communities that support them.

Batemans Bay High School will be marking the week with a formal public debate between students and staff at the Village Centre in town. Students from the school debating society, under the guidance of Ms Koprivec,

will argue that “life was better for young people in 1988”. While it may be interpreted as a pessimistic topic, it will be intriguing to see how the students examine life in a time before they were born and how the teachers can put to rest some of misconceptions about the world the millennials have inherited.

Education Week Debate 1998 The debate commemorates a similar event held twenty years ago. The school has invited its first English Head Teacher, Mr Ross Hosking, to be one of the adjudicators. Mr Hosking was part of the original debate and we look forward to his involvement.

If you are free at 3:30pm on Wednesday 2 August, you are encouraged to come to listen to the debate at the Village Centre, right near the stairs at the corner of North and Perry Streets.

Au revoir Baptiste, benvenuta Giulia Our French exchange student Baptiste Bocquet has said goodbye to Australia after twelve months with us. Anyone who spent any time with Baptiste could attest to how much he has grown over the past year, as well as how much his English has improved. Student exchange is a wonderful experience for the hosts, not just the students. We learned a lot from Baptiste, including how little time we spend in school compared to those is some Europeans countries.

As soon as Baptiste departed, we were delighted to agree to hosting another exchange student. Giulia Torghele hails from Trento in the north of Italy. Her home school is a classical lyceum where classical Greek and Latin literature are keys parts of the curriculum – very different to an Australian comprehensive high school. Giulia enjoys travelling (obviously), all types of sport and meeting new people. I’m sure she will feel at ease here in Batemans Bay and will make the most of her six month stay.

Parent/Teacher and Elective Information Night Semester 2 parent/teacher night is on tomorrow afternoon from 4pm in the hall. At the request of parents and staff, we are trialling a booking system for appointment times using the online Parent Portal. All families who did not previously have access were mailed login details last term. If you can’t make an appointment electronically, don’t panic. You can call the office at any time or just show up on the night. For those new to the school, our parent/teacher nights are regularly held on the last Tuesday of Term 1 and the second Tuesday of Term 3. This allows parents to reserve the nights well in advance.

Immediately following the parent/teacher night, we will be providing information about electives for students moving into Year 11 in 2018 in the library. If you are unable to attend and would like to speak to someone regarding senior school, please contact Mrs Caroline Preston.

Student Achievement Caleb Healy Year 7

Caleb has an excellent all-round work ethic, but sometimes students just need to be commended for showing maturity and doing the right thing. Caleb can be counted on to look after others and promote the Bay Way core values.

School Photos Annual school photo day is on Monday 7 August. Year 12 students will have their photos taken after their exams. Orders can be placed online at www.theschoolphotographer.com.au or collect an envelope from your year advisor to bring to the photographer on the day.

From The Deputies We have now commenced Semester 2 at school. This means the start of our second reporting period. Reports have gone home to all students highlighting student achievement from Terms 1 and 3 or Semester 1. If you have not received a copy, students can see their year advisors for their copy.

Staff engaged in professional learning on Monday 25

July, which aimed to:

• review and plan for methods of assessing and reporting as a school and in our subject specific areas,

• reflect on the importance of developing and maintaining respectful relationships and the building of connections within and to the school community,

• allow staff involved in Quality Teaching Rounds to discuss progress with the Principal, and

• engage in further faculty planning for Semester 2.

It is fantastic to hear students and staff interact in such a positive manner as we return to the business of education. We are always heartened to witness the genuine care and concern that staff and students have for each other. Personally, to have students greet us with comments like, ‘Hi Miss. How was your holiday?’ and have students say they are happy to back at school indicates that we are creating a positive environment. This can only translate to success. Research has shown that safe and supportive schools enable better educational outcomes for students and promote positive mental health.

Learning and school A few issues require a mention in this edition of the newsletter that concern parent communication with students while at school and our obligation to provide a healthy canteen.

Firstly, we encourage parents to communicate with students through the Front Office during school hours. Given our new mobile phone policy parents can inadvertently be disrupting teaching and learning time should they contact their child directly on their mobile phone.

In regard to attendance, the school is to be aware of alternative arrangements. Students are not to leave without informing us of their whereabouts. If unwell, students must go to the Front Office and report as sick. Staff will then contact parents/carers and make appropriate arrangements.

Secondly, we have an obligation to follow our healthy school canteen procedures and cannot have food passed through the fence during recess and lunch. McDonalds, KFC and other ‘fast foods’ are not encouraged at school.

Acknowledging staff and student achievement Our Open Girls and Boys Volleyball Teams who represented BBHS at the CHSSA NSW State Championships. The boys finished a creditable 13. An outstanding effort considering they have only been playing the sport for 18 months. The girls played off for the gold medal and after a nail biting five set game, they were awarded the silver medal. Mr Inglis and Mr Blowes along with our committed parent assistant and manager, Mrs Dot Kinnane, provided coaching, management and moral support for the players. Wow – what an achievement. The boy’s team consisted of Connor Art, Jacomb Graham, Brody Johns, Rhys Keller, Rhodes Lea, Rhys Macdonnell and Nathan Meacham.

The girl’s team included Kateia Barenaba, Stella Cross, Emerson Hall, Emily Kinnane, Ella Pearce and Molly Wilkinson. Unfortunately, other team members were unable to attend, but have been integral to the success of the team and included Lily Attwood, Braieta Barenaba and Simone Lavis.

Sculpting in Visual Arts In Visual Arts in the MC classroom during Term 2, we worked with a variety of medium. I created these Five Nights at Freddy’s sculptures out of Blu Tack. My inspiration for these sculptures was the Indie game series Five Nights at Freddy’s. These sculptures are of

five characters from one of six games. I used lead and coloured pencils to plan and draw my characters.

Miss Pleasant said, “I am delighted with the result! Seth is a talented artist who really committed himself to this project. We may just see him designing characters for video games in the future!”

Little Litter Warriors: Youth Frontiers Program As part of the Youth Frontiers program, I have chosen to base my project on the environment and conservation, particularly the rubbish in our local area. I have started a social media campaign on Instagram, little_litter_warriors, which shows images and

descriptions of what I have found on my way home from school or anywhere else.

If you have any interest in the issue, feel free to follow my page and if you find any rubbish, take a photo of it and post it using #littlelitterwarriors. I have also decided to hold a competition at the primary schools which

entail the students come up with their own ideas on rubbish and draw it onto paper. At the end of the term I will hold a presentation to Year five and six students at one or more primary schools, and show them my journey as well as having someone else speak at the presentation to give facts and statistics. After the presentation, the students will walk outside and make a human sign which will read either ‘little litter warriors’ or just ‘litter warriors’ and a photo will be taken with a drone.

Interact Club The Interact Club would love your pre-loved clothes and is starting a market stall at the Corrigan’s Beach markets to raise money.

The Interact Club has previously donated swags for the homeless and filtration drinking straws for remote villages in third world countries. Their current major project is to supply a beach wheel chair for the disabled.

The clothing must be in good condition and have no inappropriate, rude or suggestive slogans and can be dropped off into the basket in the front office.

For more information about Interact, please drop into our meeting held each Thursday in Room 1 during the lunch break.
