PRINCIPAL REPORT RETURN TO FACE-TO-FACE LEARNING UPDATE Parents and carers were notified at the end of last week regarding the updated guidelines for schools. As a result of these changes we shall be making some additional adjustments to school activities. Some of these changes came into effect this week while others will occur at the commencement of next term. Changes which came into effect from Monday 15 June include:
• School assemblies with a specific length of time however at this point there will be no visitors or parents allowed to attend.
• Choirs and performing arts at school, with safety protocols in place.
• Students may attend other schools for essential curriculum related reasons or placements.
• Incursions/external providers can provide activities that support delivery of curriculum.
• Community use activities used by students such as dance classes, and student sport skills development, outside of school hours with limited adult attendance.
• Day field trips to outdoor locations. with no physical distancing requirements, are able to take place.
• External Service Providers that supply services to specific students within the school and invite them to be able to return and support within the school following protocols.
Changes which will come into effect from 20 July include:
• competitions aligned with current health advice (including activities run by external organisations)
• Inter-school student events and competitions (choirs, sport , debating, public speaking)
• Special Religious Education (SRE) / Special Education in Ethics (SEE)
• Work experience for students
• P&C meetings – with a strong preference for on-line where possible
• Parent/teacher meetings, where these need to take place. There is a strong preference for online meetings where possible unless involving serious matters that require face to face discussion.
Please note that specific information regarding any school activities
will be communicated by staff through the newsletter, app and
individual letters sent home.
Once again I wish to thank all families for your support in afternoon
dismissal where parents are distancing themselves and remaining
outside the school grounds. Your support is greatly appreciated.
DEMOUNTABLE REMOVAL Temporary fencing was placed around the disabled demountable toilet running adjacent to the Kindergarten classrooms. In order for the removal of the current building and the new upgraded facility to be put into place, the gate on Marlowe Rd which aligns with the crossing has now been permanently locked. The new building is larger than the current facility which means access through this gate and path will be affected. Parents are still able to access the school via the gate which runs between the Year 4 classrooms. All parents and carers are reminded to please wait outside this school exit as we have many students who catch the bus in the afternoon and in order for staff to support students we kindly ask the area is clear.
PARKING Thankyou to all the families who are following road rules and ensuring students arrive at school and leave in the afternoon in a safe way. A reminder for all parents who access the drop off / pick up area to kindly keep moving if you are unable to pull into a car spot. I have spoken to students regarding waiting for parents to pull into a spot rather than having some parents who call their students into traffic where they are double parked. This is extraordinarily unsafe and I ask all parents and carers to support the school in modelling safe practices. CLASS VISITS Over the last three weeks I have had the pleasure of being part of the outstanding learning in classrooms. Students have warmly welcomed me and sharing their quality learning. Students are fortunate to have quality educators at Bateau Bay supporting them on their education journey to ensure all students are known, valued and cared for. Here the students in KCL are enjoying an independent activity where they are practising individual sight words by making the word using sounds attached to cars and parking them and finally taking a photo using an iPad as evidence of their learning.

REPORTS As part of the guidelines for students returning to school the Department of Education has provided guidelines for schools regarding amended reporting to parents for Semester 1. The changes to the reports are for Semester 1 2020 only. Each school has been able to provide a simplified, written report about students’ learning which includes learning undertaken at school and online from home. The grading of students using the five point A-E scale is not required however student comments will reflect the language of the scale. A sample of the Bateau Bay report is provide below for your reference.
I wish to thank the staff for the extensive amount of time and work
put into reports this semester particularly with current
circumstances. All parents and carers are encouraged to make an
appointment with their child’s teacher to clarify or discuss any
aspects of the student report.
Reports will be sent home to families next term. STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY TERM 3 On Monday 20 July staff will be involved in mandatory compliance
training in CPR, anaphylaxis as well as collaborative planning for
teaching and learning in mathematics. Staff development days
provide unique opportunities for staff to collaborate and improve
curriculum, student wellbeing and support practices. Staff return on
Monday 20 July followed by all students on Tuesday 21 July.
