Kiss the Sky owner still adjusting to Batavia By FRANK [email protected]

BATAVIA — It’s been about six months since Steve Warrenfeltz decided to move his independent record store

Kiss the Sky from downtown Geneva to downtown Batavia.

A major reason Warrenfeltz moved was he wanted to expand and incorporate a live music venue with his shop — something he couldn’t do at the Geneva location because of building codes and space restrictions.

Warrenfeltz recently sat down with the Republican to talk about adjusting to Batavia:

How’s business been going, so far, in Batavia? The move was a little bit disruptive, so business

started down compared to what it was in Geneva. It’s

not where it was, but it’s moving in the right direction. Our die-hard customers followed us. ... It’s the casual customers that would come in every once in a while that we’re missing. We did what we could to let everyone know about the move, but every day we’re still getting phone calls from people asking if we’ve moved.

What are some of the differences between the Geneva location and the Batavia location?

This space is about 40-percent bigger. This build-ing is more fitting, I think, for what we do. It has a nice ambiance. We have room for live music, which is what we wanted to do. There’s a lot of parking around but customers sometimes have trouble finding it. Downtown Batavia is no downtown Geneva in terms of shopping or in being a destination point. People travel from many miles to go to Geneva, which I don’t think happens here.

How are the live concerts going? It’s going well. We’ve had five shows. Three were part

of the Kiss the Sky series we started. All those three have been sell-out. And we’ve partnered with BATV to broadcast the shows. We’re getting ready to start another show called “The Vinyl Revolution.” The first one should air Feb. 1. The first show is called “The Blues had a baby and they called it rock and roll.”

What’s going to happen with Record Store Day?Record Store Day is the celebration of the independent

record store, which is really what it’s all about. It’s on the third Saturday in April. On that day, 200 to 300 limited edition recordings are released primarily on vinyl and sold exclusively at independent record stores. The albums could include a re-make of a Beach Boys album, new stuff from Jack White and range from indie to classic rock, all genres really. Record Store Day is becoming the biggest day of the year for a lot of record stores. We have been a part of Record Store Day since day one. This year, we’ll probably do the same thing which is have live music. But we haven’t really thought about it, yet. We’ll definitely have live music and a party atmosphere.

If you go Kiss the Sky is located at 180 First St. in down-town Batavia. The phone number is 630-406-0086.

Mayor to unveil evidence of more Lincoln ties at library By Frank [email protected]

BATAVA — Condo residents in a historic Batavia build-ing with ties to President Abe Lincoln will probably not see a lull in gawkers anytime soon.

That’s because Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke is about to unveil more evidence tying the president to the city.

“In the last few months, two new documents have been discovered that significantly tie Abraham Lincoln to Judge Samuel Lockwood,” Schielke said.

Lockwood was a prominent Batavia resident.“There’s always been a belief that Samuel Lockwood

and Abraham Lincoln knew each other, but there was little evidence,” Schielke said. “These documents, I think, prove Lincoln and Lockwood were comrades and friends.”

Schielke will reveal the letters and talk about their con-tents during the “Books Between Bites” event Jan. 17 at the Batavia Library.

One of the letters was found by a former Batavia resi-dent, Rodney Ross, who now works as an archivist at the National Archives in Washington D.C.

Ross contacted Schielke and sent him a copy of the letter.

A second letter was found by another Batavia resident. The title of Schielke’s presentation is “The Book That

Was Never Published.”Schielke said he didn’t want give away too much before

the presentation, but apparently, Lockwood and Lincoln requested that Congress publish a book but the deal was never approved.

“This was 150 years ago and some of this stuff is still coming out of the blue,” Schielke said. “It’s interest-ing to think what else there could be that we don’t know about.”

Lockwood was a member of the Illinois Supreme Court in Springfield where he likely knew Lincoln in 1853.

Lockwood later moved to Batavia because he had a job overseeing railroad construction in northern Illinois and Batavia served as a link between the Northwest Railroad and the Burlington Railroad.

The letters might help to draw even more Lincoln buffs to Batavia.

The historic building that is now condos was once a sanitorium called Bellevue Place.

Lincoln’s widow, Mary Todd Lincoln, was committed here by her son in 1875 after suffering depression from losing her husband to assassination and the death of three of her sons.

The Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield recently held a retri-al to determine Mary’s sanity and if she should’ve been committed.

The retrial and the recent release of the movie “Lincoln” has brought renewed interest to Batavia and Bellevue Place.

Schielke said sometimes people travel from several states away just to see the former sanitorium and Mary’s room.

Unfortunately, the entire building’s interior was reno-vated and Mary’s room is not how it was.

Furthermore, Bellevue Place is a private residential building and the doors are locked.

Still, Schielke said history buffs and Lincoln fans fre-quently visit the property and take pictures.

Mary’s bed and dresser are on display at the Depot Museum at the Batavia Riverwalk.

Books Between BitesThe Books Between Bites series at the Batavia Library

is in its 26th season and has featured several writers of note.

Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune and WGN Radio is a frequent presenter, as is ESPN editor Lester Munson.

The program was started in 1987 by the late Rev. Lee

C. Moorehead and his wife Betty after they retired toBatavia.

The reverend died in 2003, but the program is stillmanaged by his wife, their daughter Becky Hoag, LibraryDirector George Scheetz and the library’s adult servicesmanager Stacey Peterson.

This committee gathers ideas for events throughoutthe year.

“Sometimes, we have an author speaking about his orher book or a local person giving a book review,” Petersonsaid. “The series has a good following.”

She said about 75 people regularly show for theseries.

And although the attendees are in a good range ofages, Peterson said most are in their retirement age asthe events are held at noon on weekdays.

Upcoming presenters include Lester Munson inFebruary, Diane Capitani who will talk about the novel“Pride and Prejudice” in March and Nancy Smith Hoppwho will talk about a book featuring the artwork of an“underappreciated” local artist in April.

Structure of style Andrea Reynders sculpts career in fashion design

After Andrea Reynders of St. Charles took early retirement from chairing the department of fashion design at the School of the Art Institute

of Chicago, she found the time to build a clothing line, now carried exclusively by Sandra Webster in Geneva. Her creative career extends from being a visiting art-ist at the Royal College of Art in London to consulting with art and design schools across the country on developing new fashion studies programs. She and her architect husband, Hennie Reynders, co-teach a design course annually at the SAIC, and have both been involved with the St. Charles Arts Council, including plans for a fashion-themed “neXt gallery” pop-up exhibition this year.

What does your line focus on?I’m producing … one-of-a-kind or small edition

clothing. I have been designing my whole adult life.

You hardly sound retired.People say retire. I say rewire. If you’re a creative

person, it never leaves you. It’s not something you leave at the office and lock the door.

What will people find at Sandra Webster?A fine line of coats. I love to work with natural fab-

rics. They’ll be looking at a lot of natural woolens at the moment. I also love the idea of repurposing woolens and cashmere. … I take really good woolen blankets, wash them, soften them, clean them up and make them beautiful and give them a whole new use and life again. I hunt around for … really good cashmere sweat-ers. I will launder them and take them apart and recut them and put them into new designs. I truly believe if you have a (well) produced garment and it’s made out of a very good fabric, you could have that garment for many, many years — if it has a good sense of design to it. It’s all about style. I’m not a a trend designer. I’m (aware) of what’s in fashion in the moment, (but) I tend to design something simple and architectural in shape (and) ways of manipulating the garment itself.

Share an example.(My) flip coat … is a two-way coat made in a high-

tech fiber, a well-made synthetic. You can fold them up into an envelope size. There are two ways of wearing them: One way is a shorter coat (with) two deep pock-ets and a very full collar that you can make a hood. If you take that coat and turn it upside down, it becomes a longer coat. It’s a trick in design. It still has pockets that are usable.

You create garments conducive for travelers.I like to eliminate carrying handbags or purses. I like

to build in a lot of pockets. (And) I like to hide pockets in places one wouldn’t expect to look for them, (where) you can keep valuables, a passport, extra money. (I

pick) fabrics that are … wash and wear, and pack up really small.

You’ve been sharing fashion advice with the St. Charles Singers ensemble.

I’ve done a lot of costume (work) in my career … for film and theater and advertising. I’m very aware of people’s reaction to what you’re looking at. I’m very interested in all aspects of design and living, and how we can make our lives beautiful, but func-tional at the same time, so it’s a pleasure to be alive.

On the verge Third-place run at Elgin tourney shows Batavia boys on the rise

By JASON [email protected]

Batavia’s boys basketball team was close to having success, the record just didn’t show it.

The Bulldogs’ holiday tournament run at Elgin did.

Playing four games in four days, they went 3-1 and took third place with a win over Las Vegas Centennial Dec. 29.

“I think we’ve been playing well,” Batavia head coach Jim Nazos said. “We haven’t been far off all year. We’d played well, but it was just in spurts.”

The Bulldogs (7-8) had lost six in a row and seven of eight early in the season, but the Elgin tourna-ment seemed to signal that they are heading in the right direction. A tough Upstate Eight River sched-ule early in the year and big win over Streamwood Dec. 21 actually set the table for the tournament.

“You take a look at our conference, and our conference did will over the holidays,” Nazos said. “Larkin and Elgin played for the champion-ship (at Elgin), St. Charles East did well at Proviso West and St. Charles North won a couple games down at Pontiac. The conference is tough this year and we’d been playing well at times. We beat Streamwood and we were playing well going in.”

Micah Coffey drained a pair of three-point-ers and went 8-of-8 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter for 14 of his games-high 21 points in the Harlan game.

Zach Strittmatter had 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals against Rockford East, a game in which Batavia scored 47 second-half points against a team that had just two losses coming into the tourney. Mike Carlson came off the bench to score 11 and grab seven rebounds,

underscoring the strong bench play the Bulldogs had throughout the tourney.

“Mike Carlson had some nice nights for us coming off the bench,” Nazos said. “Jeremy Schoessling may not have scored much, but against Rockford East he was 4-of-4 at the line down the stretch. Tucker Knox rebounded well, defended well and was strong with the ball.”

The Bulldogs handed Centennial, with Stanford-bound siblings Marcus and Malcolm Allen, its third loss of the season behind Jake Pollack’s game-high 25 points.

After the slow start to the season, Batavia is on a roll as it preps to host Clark at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“Winning four of five is something we’ve been building up to and hopefully we can keep it going,” Nazos said.

Many hockey players get nostalgic about playing outside, whether it’s on a manicured rink or a frozen pond.

The recent popularity of the NHL’s Winter Classic has given extra attention to the idea of playing outdoors and more area high school teams are jumping on the bandwagon.

“It’s something every team should do,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “We obviously picked it up from the NHL. We stole their idea and ran with it.”

The Illinois High School Hockey League West Division, which features area teams Bartlett Wheaton West, Hinsdale Central, South Hockey and York, even took the name and Jan. 1 date from the NHL.

“We’ve got what we call our Winter Classic games,” West commissioner Jim McKeague said. “We play at the Elmhurst YMCA for the varsity games and we play at the outdoor rink at Evergreen Park for the JV. There’s a total of eight games this year. It started out as two. They’ve been very successful.”

For the third consecutive year, the Glenbard hockey club will play an out-door game against PREP at the Watts Ice Center in Glencoe. This season’s matchup was set for Jan. 5.

“The kids have a blast with it,” Hawkins said. “They put on the eye black even though we play our game at night. It’s a really great experience and we’ve had a lot of success with it.”

Hawkins said that it usually takes the two teams a little bit to get acclimated to the new environment but after that, it is

business as usual.“The first period, the teams are feel-

ing it out, getting used to it,” he said. “But once they get comfortable, it gets really competitive. Both teams really want to win it.”

Hinsdale Central has already played two outdoor games this season, one in Cicero and one in Elmhurst. The Red Devils faced Lyons Township in one of those matchups with Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville dropping the puck.

“It brings you back to old-style, old-school hockey,” said Hinsdale Central

coach Mike Rohdenburg. “Everybody really enjoyed it. It is different and a different kind of environment but I liked it a lot.”

“Hockey players just love playing outdoors or out on the pond,” LT coach Ricky Reznick said. “You’re playing in a different setting, you’re outside, you’re playing in a rink you’re not used to. It’s just a good night of hockey for both clubs participating in it.”

While most players would enjoy an outdoor game, it’s not something that every program is doing yet. AWF coach Marc Pinto is in his first year with the team and hasn’t entertained the

thought of playing outside. Pinto admit-ted the ice conditions aren’t always the best outside and can slow down the play, however, he has fond memories of playing outside.

“I grew up playing at the Elmhurst Y,” Pinto said. “Every now and then we’d skate with a bunch of guys."

The Elmhurst YMCA is one of a few outdoor options available in the area along with the Evergreen Park Ice Rink and the Community Ice Rink in Cicero.

Scott Schmid also contributed to the report.

Hockey fans bundle up in the stands while Lyons Township’s Nick Wink (No. 6) carries the puck along the boards during the inaugural Hockey Winter Classic against Hinsdale Central Dec. 14 at the Bobby Hull Community Ice Rink in Cicero. Matthew Piechalak — [email protected]

SPORTS

By DAN [email protected]

A number of high school sports are forced to utilize co-op teams to make numbers for a fullteam.

Hockey has one of the more complicated co-op set ups because there isn’t as much organi-zation as there is with the Illinois High School Association for other sports.

Last year the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois decided to reorganize its co-op teams to group teams within districts and limit travel times for some of the players as much as possible. One of the worst travel set ups involved players from Montini, which played on the same team with play-ers from Andrew in Tinley Park. Now, the Bronco hockey players are grouped with Addison Trail, Willowbrook and Fenton in a more local set up.

“We looked at the high schools that madesense playing together,” said Illinois High School Hockey League West Division CommissionerJim McKeague.

The Fox Valley Hawks fall into that category — players attend Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles Eastand St. Charles North (a handful of players, from Oswego and Aurora Christian and Kaneland are grandfathered in). There have been some road-bumps as the team meshes together, but that process should be easier in the future.

“This is my third year in a row running acombination team,” said Hawks head coach Jim Quinn, who coached a St. Charles East-St.Charles North-Hampshire-Burlington Centralteam last season and an East-North co-op theyear before. “It makes it harder to mesh as a team, but it seems to be coming together. It’s working out now, and we have a good nucleusthat should be back with us next year.”

The Glenbard Hockey Club got an addition this year as Glenbard East joined the group which already included Glenbard North, GlenbardSouth and Glenbard West.

“They wanted to see more long-term solu-tions,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “Inthe past, it was a lot more year to year. They wanted to make it more geographical-based. Solidifying the co-ops should help teams have long-term success.

“And for us, it is a good thing for the players to be all together as a district.”

Things are still a bit murky for the South Hockey Club, which includes players from Hinsdale South (seven) and Downers Grove South (five). Downers Grove North, which usedto co-op with Lemont and Lockport, has threeplayers on the varsity team, while there are a few Lemont and Lockport students who still play for the South Hockey JV team.

The new redistricting rules are more geo-graphically friendly, which is both a positive and negative for South Hockey.

“I have football players from all three schools,”head coach Mike Dorich said. “In every othersport it’s a big rivalry for those schools and now they’re trying to form a team together. It’s hard to change that mentality.”
