Identification Procedure

• Each player is responsible for presenting a current UNC One Card at game time

• Once they present One Card, sign them in on the score sheet with PID #

• If a player does not sign in on the score sheet and they enter the game it is a team technical foul

• If they don’t have One Card, they cannot play, refer them to a Supervisor.

Players, Substitutions, and Equipment

• Game shall be played with five (5) players

• Game can continue with four (4) players

• Official Game= 5 players

• Default= 3-4 players

• Forfeit= less than 3 players

Co-Rec

• Four (4) players are required to start, with a ratio of two(2) females and two (2) males, however, a team may continue with four (4) players provided that: two (2) females and two (2) males at all times.

• In Co-Recreational play any field goal, regardless of location on the floor, scored by a female player, counts as three (3) points. A free-throw is only worth one (1) point regardless of gender.

• In Co-Recreational play it is no longer required that a female player possess the ball in any given possession

Substitutions

• All Substitutes must report to mid-court / scorers table.

• Substitutes may enter the game during any dead ball, but must be beckoned in by officials before entering: Report the foul first and then let substitutes enter the game

• Running onto the court w/o permission will result in a technical foul.

Illegal Equipment

• 1. A guard, cast, or brace made of hard, unyielding leather, plaster, pliable (soft) plastic, metal or any other hard substance.

• 2. Head decorations, headwear, and jewelry– Exception: a headband no wider than two (2)

inches.

3. Equipment which is unnatural and designed to increase a player’s height or reach

The Ball

• Men- A men’s regulation basketball will be the official ball

• Women – A women’s regulation basketball will be the official ball

• Co Rec – A women’s regulation basketball will be the official ball or a men’s regulation basketball can be used if agree by both teams

• Teams must provide their own ball. Based on the official’s judgment, the best ball will be used. If teams can not decide on a ball then an Intramural Sports ball will be used the entire game.

Back Court Violation

• On the shorter Woollen Gym courts, the backcourt line (once the frontcourt has been established within ten seconds) moves back to the opponent’s free throw line extended.

Definitions

• Blocking - blocking is illegal personal contact which impedes the progress of an opponent

• Charging- charging is illegal personal contact caused by pushing or moving into an opponent’s torso

• Closely Guarded- occurs when a player in control of the ball in his/her team’s frontcourt is guarded by an opponent who is within six feet of a player who is dribbling or holding the ball.

Definitions Cont’d

• Continuous Motion- applies to tries for field goals when fouled. It does not apply if a teammate fouls after a player has started a try for a goal and before the ball is in flight.

• Player Control- A player is in control when he/she is holding or dribbling a live ball inbounds

• Team-Control Foul: is a common foul committed by a member of the team that has team control

Fouls

• Dunking results in Technical Foul– The shot does count.

• Technical Fouls result in two free throws and the ball.

• Personal Fouls- illegal contact with an opponent while the ball is live, which hinders a defensive or offensive opponent

• Flagrant Fouls- personal or technical foul of a violent nature.

Screening

• Screen-legal action by a player who, w/o causing contact, delays or prevents an opponent from reaching a desired position.

• To establish a legal screening position:1. The screener may face any direction

2. Time and distance are relevant

3. Must be stationary

Violations

• Floor Violations: traveling, double dribble, basket interference, elbow, leaving the court for an unauthorized reason

• Free Throw Violations offensive and defensive

• Throw In Violations ( It is not traveling it is just violation)

Scoring and Timing Regulations

• Teams are required to have a sixth person to keep score. Player or non-player

• No protests allowed over scoring

• Games consist of two (2) twenty-minute halves. Clock will run continuously until last two minutes of Second Half. The clock will stop on all dead ball situations.

Extra Period and Timeouts“Only in the Playoffs”

• First overtime= 3 minutes

• Second overtime= 2 minutes

• After second overtime= 1 minute with Regulation clock.

• Each team receives three (3) timeouts per game. Teams receive one additional timeout per overtime.

Disqualification and ending game

• A second technical foul charged to a player results in disqualification

• Three technical fouls charged to player(s) on same team, automatically disqualifies team.

• A Referee/Supervisor may end the game at any time he/she feels the game cannot be controlled or feels it is unsafe to continue.

• Mercy Rule: If a team is ahead by thirty (30) or more points under five (5) minutes in the second half, the game will be ended.

Pre Game Duties

• Arrive 15 minutes before game time• Survey the court make sure it is safe

look for dirt and condensation on the gym floors

• Check the score sheet and make sure that all participants are signed in

• Review procedures with scorekeeper/timekeeper and other officials

Jump Ball

• The referee shall face the table and toss the ball.

• Both officials are responsible if there is a bad toss

• The umpire is responsible for all non jumpers and goes in the direction of the ball

• The trail official is responsible for the possession arrow

Foul Reporting

• Whistle – quick, loud, concise – Be Confident• Foul – closed fist, arm slightly raised• Hand signal for type of foul• Verbally indicate the player that fouled by number

and jersey color• If free throws follow, verbally indicate number of

attempts. No free throws then indicate throw in spot

Foul Reporting Cont.

• Addressing the scorers’ table– Hustle to the foul reporting area

– Come to a complete stop

– Notify scorekeeper if a basket counts (when needed)– With a strong voice first indicated jersey color and second the

number of person who fouled both verbally and with a one-hand signal.

– Give visual signal of foul

– Indicate number of free throws or throw in spot

– Beckon substitutes ( after you have reported the foul)

position– Make sure lane spaces are properly filled– Visually and verbally indicate the number of

free throws to be administered– Always bounce the ball to the thrower– Watch first space on the near lane and all lane

spaces on the opposite side
