I can’t seem to be able to reach this page from my iphone!!!!
In French, every noun has a gender. It’s either masculin (male) or féminin (female).
You can tell the gender of a noun by the article that comes before it.
The English a will be un (m) or une (f).
The English the will be le (m) or la (f).
Examples:
une tasse (f)a cup
un poisson (m)a fish
la nuit (f)the night
le camion (m)the truck
une banane (f)a banana
un citron (m)a lemon
la journée (f)the day / daytime
le soleil (m)the sun
la lune (f)the moon
la voiture (f)the car
la chaussure (f)the shoe
le sac (m)the bag
la terre (f)the earth
le moteur (m)the engine
How do I know the gender of a French noun? I learn the noun with its article.
Qu’est-ce que c’est?What is this?
C’est une tasse. (f)It’s a cup.
For people, the grammatical gender is the same as the gender of the person.
un hommea man
un garçona boy
une femmea woman
une fillea girl
For animals, it depends.
Some animals have a “general gender” by which we refer to them.
We always say:
un zèbre (m)a zebra
une girafe (f)a giraffe
If we want to be specific about the gender of the animal, we will add mâle or femelle to the noun.
un mâlea male
une girafe mâlea male giraffe
une femellea female
une girafe femellea female giraffe
Other animals have a different or modified noun for the female:
un liona lion
un chata cat
un chiena dog
un moutona sheep
un cochona pig
une lionne (f)a female lion
une chatte (f)a female cat
une chienne (f)a female dog
une brebis (f)a sheep
une truie (f)a female pig
Articles Part 2: The L apostrophe
When we use le or la and the word starts with a vowel or an h, le and la become l’
Examples:
l’hommethe man
l’oiseauthe bird
l’orangethe orange
l’eauthe water
l’arbrethe tree
l’accidentthe accident
un homme (m)a man
un oiseau (m)a bird
une orange (f)an orange
une eau (f)a water
un arbre (m)a tree
un accident (m)an accident/a wreck
Plural of Nouns and Articles
Just like in English, the plural in French is usually marked by an S at the end of the word. But it is silent. The article will also change in the plural form.
Le and la become les. Un et une become des.
une tassea cup
une cartea card
la bananethe banana
la femmethe woman
une fillea girl
un citrona lemon
la pommethe apple
la voiturethe car
une fleura flower
une chaussurea shoe
des tassescups
des cartescards
les bananesthe bananas
les femmeswomen
des fillesgirls
des citronslemons
les pommesthe apples

The plural in French can sometimes be marked by a x at the end of the word. This is true for nouns ending in eu, eau and au.
un bateaua boat
un neveu
des bateauxboats
des neveux
a nephew nephewsFrench Subject Pronouns and the verb Aimer: To like or to love
