SUPPOrT SErVICESFITNESS CENTErThe fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.
ATHLETIC TrAININGThe Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic
Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.
ACAdEMIC SUPPOrTAcademics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.
Scott Kushner recently completed his third season as the head baseball coach of Centenary College. In three seasons, he has guided the team to 57 wins overall, including 27 conference victories and two Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament berths.
The team finished the 2011 campaign 11-24 overall, including 5-13 in the CSAC. In his first season with the Cyclones, sophomore Victor Nunez earned First Team
All-CSAC Designated Hitter, Third Team New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) All-State and NJCBA All-Rookie Team honors. He was joined on the All-Conference teams by juniors Anthony DeSomma and Chris Smith and seniors Brian Lemay and Lou Penna, as each were named Honorable Mention. Off the field, the team earned eight CSAC All-Academic Team honors.
In 2009-10, Kushner guided the team to the first 20-win season of his coaching career. Centenary finished 20-22 and 10-8 in CSAC action and entered the conference tournament as the fourth seed, eventually falling in a hard-fought 8-5 contest to Neumann. Senior Michael Fasano was named First Team First Base while DeSomma and senior Mark DeMaio took home Second Team Designated Hitter and Outfield honors, respectively.
Fasano also received New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Second Team All-State and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Mid-Atlantic-Region Third Team while pitcher Chris Sisco earned ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove First Team accolades. The team also saw success off the field, as DeSomma was named ESPN the Magazine/CoSida College Division Academic All-District 2 First Team as a designated hitter.
In his first year at the helm of the Cyclones, Kushner guided the team to a 15-20-1 record, including a 7-8 mark in the CSAC and a berth in the conference tournament. The team started slowly, losing nine of its first 13 games, but finished strong, going 11-8-1 the rest of the regular season, including a 5-2-1 mark in its final eight contests.
In the conference tournament, Centenary fell to the eventual champion No. 9 Keystone in its opening game, before losing to Gwynedd-Mercy in a nail biter, 10-9, in its second contest. Under Kushner’s guidance, five Cyclones received All-Conference honors, as Andrew Koncen, DeMaio and Fasano were named to the First Team while Dan Chapman and Andrew Granozio earned Honorable Mentions.
Kushner made the move to Centenary from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he was the head coach for two years and the Director of Physical Fitness in 2007. While at the Academy, he handled all the baseball operations and over his two-year tenure was able to improve the program’s output in nearly every statistical category. On the fitness side, Kushner oversaw the Physical Fitness Assessments (PFA) for the entire regiment of Midshipmen, which totaled nearly 1,000 students.
Prior to his pair of seasons at Kings Point, Kushner was an assistant/interim head coach at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa., from 2003-2006. He also was involved with the strength and conditioning program at Swarthmore as the director of that specialized area from 2005-06.
Before his coaching career, Kushner was a four-year starting centerfielder for Swarthmore College (1999-2002). During his playing days he was a two-year captain. He also earned the Hustle Award (1999), was a two-time Dick Hall Award Winner (2001-02), an All-Centennial Conference selection (2001-02) and finished his career among the top 10 in numerous statistical categories on the school’s all-time list. Following graduation, Kushner went on to play in the North American Baseball Association and Delaware County semi-pro baseball leagues.
Kushner holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Swarthmore (2002) and a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (2004). He, his son, Colin, and his wife, Tiffany, reside in Hackettstown.
Brett Stout is entering his fourth season with the Centenary College baseball program. Stout came to Centenary following a four-year playing career at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. With the Greyhounds, Stout earned four varsity letters while playing primarily as a second baseman and pitcher, also seeing some time in the outfield. Stout was the Gus Garcsar Memorial Award Winner in 2006, Team MVP in 2008 and the team’s
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative from 2005-2008.
Stout graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and brings solid baseball experience with him to the coaching staff. During the summer of 2008, he started his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with a local American Legion Baseball program and head coach of the Lehigh Valley Baseball Academy’s 14 and under team, which participated in Elite Championship Baseball Tournaments. Stout continues to work at the Lehigh Valley Baseball Academy as an instructor, videographer and head coach of the 15 and under baseball team. During the summer of 2009, he worked as the videographer for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, while also throwing batting practice and serving as a bullpen catcher.
Stout lives in Washington, N.J., and is pursuing his Master’s Degree in School Counseling from Centenary College.
Frank Iannone begins his second stint with the Cyclones baseball program after serving as the catching instructor from 2002-2006. A seasoned coach, Iannone has instructed countless athletes, including Cole Kimball, the first Centenary player to be selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. In addition to Kimball, Iannone has coached collegiate level athletes in the National Adult Baseball Association.
In addition to his coaching experience, Iannone has spent a life in law enforcement, working as a New Jersey State Trooper from 1986-2011. A graduate of Centenary College in 2003, Iannone earned his Masters of Arts from Centenary in 2010. Iannone lives in Great Meadows, N.J.
COACHING STAFF
SEASON PrEVIEW The Cyclones look to bounce back this year after a tough 11-24 finish last season, including a 5-13 mark in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC).
Despite hurricanes, earthquakes and snow storms, the team had a very productive fall season this year. “Early morning practices and weekend scrimmages were very encouraging and the roster is as deep and as talented as it has been in years,” according to Head Coach Scott Kushner. The fall culminated with a 15-inning scrimmage against Sussex County Community College in which the offense posted 20 runs while Cyclone pitching held Sussex to only 3 runs. “During the course of the fall, the one thing that continued to be as impressive as the team’s performance has been its attitude,” says Kushner. Even following the conclusion of the fall season, the players continued to practice and workout together regularly.
The 2012 roster will blend seasoned veterans with promising young players, including an impressive crop of freshmen. While the team could easily be described as “young,” the tremendous leadership coming from the senior class will help accelerate our maturation as a team.
The pitching staff will be led by Chris Sisco and Chris Campbell. Sisco had a breakout year as a sophomore, but missed his entire junior year due to injury. Now that he’s healthy, he is looking to reclaim his role atop the rotation. Campbell enjoyed a breakout year of his own in 2010, moving from the bullpen into the starting rotation and finishing the season with the best ERA on the team. Both lefties will be relied upon heavily this season to anchor the staff.
Chris Zaneski, Jason Pennypacker, dylan Kemmerer and Kyle Bayse are all right-handed juniors who return for 2012. Zaneski and Pennypacker both have starting experience and are in the mix to be the in starting rotation. Kemmerer and Bayse worked primarily out of the bullpen last year and will likely do the same this season as well.
The freshman class will see a lot of innings this year and, based on their fall performances, they should be up to the task. Mitch renz and Travis Eldridge are two righties who could immediately vie for a spot in the starting rotation. Coincidently, both are coming off of serious knee injuries, with Renz missing his senior season in high school and Eldridge just now getting back to full health. Both are hard throwers with strong secondary pitches that will keep hitters off balance.
Nick Cavanaugh is the lone lefty of the bunch and he showed an ability to efficiently mow through hitters in the fall. Cesar Storm and dan derner each made the team as a walk-on thanks to a willingness to learn and high upsides. They will work exclusively out of the pen for the immediate future. Chad Frankenfield is a righty who can be a shutdown arm out of the pen. His slider is a true “plus” pitch and should give opposing hitters fits. Kevin Litus will pitch from time to time as well, but his most significant contributions will come in the infield and at the plate.
The catching position will have a very different look to it this year, with three-year starter Brian Lemay graduating last year and two freshmen joining the staff this season. Victor Nunez alternated between catching and designated hitting duties last year and made an immediate impact, earning 1st Team All-CSAC in his first year of college baseball. Sean Hunter and dave raifsnider were both very impressive in the fall, displaying strong arms and bats to match. This trio will split time behind the dish and will provide the Cyclones with better depth and flexibility than they have ever had at the position.
The infield will have a great deal of experience with Chris Smith at second base, Anthony deSomma at first base, Matt Andrews manning the hot corner at third and Garrett Meagher at either shortstop or third base, all returning for their senior years. Smith and DeSomma were both All-CSAC Honorable Mention last season and will once again be relied upon in the heart of our order.
Andrews ranks in the Top 5 in the Centenary career record books for on-base percentage and will continue to set the table for the big boppers in the lineup. Meagher was the most improved player on the roster last year and with his enthusiasm and positional flexibility, he will have an increased role this season. Marquay Mayo is a left-handed hitter with pop in his bat. He is also a smart and aggressive baserunner, so he will serve a dual purpose as pinch hitter and pinch runner as situations dictate.
The upperclassmen will be joined by a collection of skilled freshmen. ryan Caparoni is a powerful left-handed hitter who will make an immediate impact in the heart of the order. Caparoni is a phenomenal defensive first baseman, but is also athletic enough to handle the outfield while DeSomma is at first. Nick Ortiz is a second baseman who showed flashes of defensive brilliance in the fall. Though he will not be a starter this year, Ortiz has the potential to be a terrific player as he rounds out his skills this season.
Joe Forcellini was as impressive as any player this fall and will see the bulk of his time at shortstop. Forcellini’s bat, arm and work ethic will make him a centerpiece of the lineup for years to come.
ryan Mariotti will also see time at shortstop in a reserve role. Mariotti is athletic, with quick hands and a strong arm, and will be a tremendous player when his hitting catches up with his defense. Litus is a very solid player who will see most of his action at third base. His skill set is well-rounded as he can be an asset with either a glove or bat in his hand.
The outfield will be manned by a wide variety of players, all of whom bring something special to the table. randy Castillo is the unquestioned leader of this positional group as he brings an intense focus and determination to every practice and game. A reserve player for much of his first three seasons, Castillo has improved steadily over that time and he seemed to be putting it all together this fall. He may well find himself in the starting lineup on a more regular basis.
Mike Crowe is slated to return as the starter in right field. After a sluggish start to his freshman season, Crowe finished the year on an incredible tear that saw him bat above .550 over the final 12 games. He is a true 5-tool player who could put up astounding numbers if he stays locked-in over the course of an entire season.
Sean Cody has made significant improvements in all facets of the game since a year ago. Cody was really opening some eyes early in the fall before suffering a knee injury. He is back to full health now and will create some defensive nightmares for opponents with his speed and bunting skills.
dan Curcio is a skilled defensive player who has only begun to tap into his potential as a hitter. Curcio will push the upperclassmen im-mediately for playing time. Caparoni will play in left field when not at first base. All of these outfielders are capable of being starters, giving the team a great amount of depth and intriguing substitution possibilities.

Td Bank Ballpark
The Cyclones play a large portion of their home games at TD Bank Ballpark, home of the Somerset Patriots, an independent baseball team that is a member of the Atlantic League.
The ballpark, known as “The Jewel of the Atlantic League” opened on June 7, 1999, for its first Patriots game and since then has become one of the most successful minor league ballparks nationwide.
The Stadium holds 6,100 seats as well as 20 luxury boxes and a grassy area known as “The Turf Club.” TD Bank Ballpark has been home to many legendary events such as the BIG EAST Championship Tournament, the Big Apple Circus, and the State Fair.

The Cyclones also have the opportunity to play home games at Diamond Nation, home of the world renowned Jack Cust Baseball Academy.
Diamond Nation is a 65-acre campus that includes 700,000 square feet of turf fields and the ability to play up to 10 games simultaneously, even during the winter.
Because of the turf fields and the HealthQuest Sports Dome, the largest air structure in the nation, the Cyclones have a tremendous opportunity that only a select number of baseball programs get to experience nationwide.

“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project
on January 29, 2011.
Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help
propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition.
